Chapter 17
The One Who Got AwayDara was quiet all throughout the ride home. Bom kept stealing worried glances at her, she was looking out the window the whole time but Bom knew that she was crying because once in a while she would swipe a hand across her eyes. Bom wanted to respect her friend’s choice to keep silent but she was worried that Sandako might make her appearance again anytime.
“Sands, do you want to talk about it?” she asked her friend as she was backed into their slot in the parking area of their apartment.
Dara shook her head, “Thanks, Bommie, but I need some time alone.” She smiled through the silent river of tears flowing down her cheeks. “I know you’re worried Sandako might resurrect herself. I promise you she won’t.”
Bommie gave her a big squeeze as they waited for the elevator to open and take them up to their floor. “I’ll be okay, Bom. I’m not that strong yet but I’m stronger now.” Sandara gave her a squeeze of her own.
Five hours later, Dara went out of her room looking as if nothing major happened that day. Except for the barely noticeable redness and puffiness around her eyes there was no sign that she just had an emotional breakdown. The show must go on and all that crap. She came back to the station as the usual preppy Sandara that they were used to. She greeted everyone a good afternoon.
“I could swear that the Sandara who came in earlier was another person,” Kwanghee muttered to himself then he called out to Dara, “Sands, do you have a twin?”
“Nope,” She answered smiling.
“Were you diagnosed with a multiple personality disorder before?” He asked again.
“Uhm. Not that I know of but they said people with that disorder sometimes are not aware that they do.” She widened her eyes for effect and took a sharp intake of breath. “You think I might have it, sunbaenim? Oh my God! What will happen to our show next Saturday? What if my other personality takes over, sunbae? Ottoke?!!!?” She ended on a dramatic wail while grasping her co-worker’s arms and shaking him.
“Yah!” Kwanghee shook off her arms and grabbed her by the shoulders and did some shaking of his own. “Don’t you dare flake out on me that day, Sandara Park!”
She laughed at him. “Don’t worry, sunbae. I was just trying out different looks I could use on Saturday since our faces will be shown on air.” She hooked her arm on Kwanghee’s and walked with him to their workroom. “Do you think it was too much? What do you think would look good on me?” She asked Kwanghee and so the talk was effectively veered to a much safer course.
Two days after the confrontation, the last song for the night was playing on air and she had already said her goodbyes to her listeners. She was gathering her stuff, preparing to go when a knock sounded at the door. She looked up expecting to see Donghae but it was a freshly shaven Jiyong with a cap pulled low over his head that greeted her eyes.
She loo
