Chapter 9

The Promised Bridge

I was standing out on the balcony, of the hotel in Korea. After what happen with Shawn, everyone helped out to keep him away from my babies.

Seriously though. They had blow torches and sleigh hammer and all that ready to give it to him.

I was enjoying the cold air on the balcony, when Lee came over and handed me my phone. I look to see who it was and saw taxi oppa on the caller ID.

“Taxi oppa!” I said,

“Kid! Hey! Sorry couldn’t be there to pick you guys from the airport.” He said,

“That’s alright. I knew that your son had came back for a bit. How is he by the way?”,

“His doing good in the army. Enjoying his training. He wanted to come and meet you. Wanted to thank you for what you did.”,

“What did I do?” I asked, shocked by what taxi oppa said.

“Haha! Silly Kid. Hey we are on for tomorrow night? You guys coming over right?”,

“Of course! Ruki and Raki have grown and want to show off their skills to you both. Though Raki would probably sit it out though.”,

“Haha. His the shy one. Okay. See you all tomorrow. Good night Kid. Wish the others for us.”,

“Good night OPPAS!” I yelled, knowing that police oppa was there listening.

“NIGHT KID!” he yelled back.

Haha! I knew my oppas inside out.

The next day we went to the park, and Ruki and Raki were already able to walk around on their own.

Lee and I sat on the bench and watched them play. Lee soon leaned on my shoulder and rested her head there. I turned to look at her and saw her sleeping.

Lee had been a great support this whole time. After what happen with Shawn, I wasn’t myself. But everyone took over and gave me the time I needed to gather myself back.

I look up to the sky and smiled.

What did I do to earn such a good life? But no one answered as usual.

The thought of Jessica still lingered in my mind. But the doubts of her being there on that bridge were stronger.

I left a grip tighten on my hand. I looked down to see that Lee’s hand was the reason for that. Even is her sleep she still could tell when I am sad.

That night we were at our favourite restaurant. Police oppa had to work late so it was only taxi oppa there.

Taxi oppa had no problem feeding Ruki, while I feed Raki. In a way my babies were more open to taxi oppa then last time.

After the babies ate, it was our turn to eat. We talked about how our lives were. Taxi oppa laughed when Lee told him, that everyone I knew including my own kids were calling me Kid.

Thanks a lot Lee. Please... please don’t tell police oppa that! He will not let this slide! PLEASE!

We then headed to taxi and police oppa place. They still had some of the baby toys here.

By the time police oppa came back, Lee and my babies were sleeping. Taxi oppa and I were playing a Korean board game that I have no idea what’s it’s name was or how to play it, though taxi oppa told me it’s name and how to play it a thousand times.

“I see. Your still up.” Teased police oppa as he enters the living room,

I gave him a cheeky smile and said, “Nope. I’m half asleep actually.”,

Taxi oppa chuckled at my replied, while police put me in a headlock.

While he got me in his headlock, he decided to give me a noogie. (Which you use your knuckles and rub on someone head. Hurts a lot so please don’t try this at home.)

While police oppa was busy doing this to me, I decided to bring the bear down. I put my left leg behind his left leg and lifted up swiftly. But the down side was that both him and I went down. And the whole time taxi oppa was laughing his off.

In the end we ended up staying up late, chatting, playing cards and drinking a bit of wine.

The next morning when I woke up, I saw that I was still in the living room, and so were police and taxi oppa sleeping.

I also saw that someone put pillows and blanket down for us.

Smiling I knew who that someone was. And where that someone would be.

I sneaked to the kitchen and found Lee cooking breakfast, while Ruki and Raki were sitting on the baby sit.

When Ruki and Raki saw me, I immediately put my finger to my lips and tap twice. Signalling them to keep quiet. They both smiled, telling me that they will not make a sound.

Pretty good right? Over the past few months I’ve been teaching them how to scare or help others scare people. Haha! What can I say? I’m the best parent alive!

As I tip toe pass them, I gave a thank you smile.

Standing behind Lee, I saw that she was still chopping the vegetables up. So I decided to just give her a back hug instead. Didn’t want the knife flying around.

Reaching out, I put my arms around her waist and rest my chin on her left shoulder and said, “Good morning and thank you for last night.”,

Lee knew that I was thanking her for the pillows and blankets. And decided to give me a kiss on the cheek.

While I was smiling, I heard two voices or to be more precise, police and taxi oppa say “AAWWW!! SO CUTE!”.

Both Lee and I were shocked and turned around to see police oppa leaning against the wall, while taxi oppa standing, watching us the whole time.

“Don’t you both look so sweet.” Taxi oppa teased,

“So when did you two get married?” police asked with a cheeky smile on his face.

“Haha. Actually we are sneaking around.” I answered decided to play around.,

“Sneaking around?” asked both police and taxi oppa.

“Yes. You see. Lee has a boyfriend but his too busy to entertain her. We decided to sneak around behind his back.” I said, while grabbing Lee’s waist and pulled her closer to me.

“Puft!” both police and taxi oppa burst out laughing. And Lee slapped my arm while saying, “Don’t say jokes like this in front of the babies!”,

“They don’t mind. Look their laughing!” I said as I went to coo my babies, making them giggle more.

The rest of the days pass by like nothing. Then finally came the day that I would go to the bridge. Lee woke up early and knew that I was about to leave.

I bend down to kiss my babies good morning, and as usual they would open their eyes and smile at me.

I bid them farewell, and smiled to Lee as I left.

Outside the hotel, taxi oppa was there with police oppa this time. They both smiled and greeted me.

While we were driving there, silence was all that fill the taxi. They both knew that I was nervous about seeing Jessica again.

When we arrived there, police oppa got out with me, and stayed with me, while taxi oppa went to get Lee and my babies.

He walked me up to the very spot I was last time. When we reached the spot, he put his arm around my shoulder and gave me a smile.

9:33Am. she would be here soon. Police oppa left me to myself, but gave me a cheeky wink as he left. I seriously wanted to say ‘you’re in your uniform ’. But I smiled instead.

9:34. I was staring at the scenery and was about to close my eyes. But a sound caught my attention.

Turning to see what it was, I saw that it was Jessica running. She was running hard, but to where I wonder.

Then I saw that she was about to lose her balance and fall. I ran up to her, and manage to make it in time to catch her before she fell.

OH MY GOD!!! I”M HOLDING HER! DAMN HEART STOP BEATING SO DAMN LOUD!!!

I couldn’t help but stay in this position, but my instinct told me to help her up, so I did.

Holding her for a second longer, I finally let her go and took a step back.

Trying my best, I gave her my best pokerface, but when I saw her staring into my eyes I couldn’t help but smile.

I stood there looking at her for what left like forever. I couldn’t help notice her scent. Strawberry, but her actually scent was what made me light headed.

What?! I have a sensitive nose okay!!

The noise of my babies coming broke me out of this trance.

I turned and walk over to Lee and saw Raki reaching out for me.

Picking him up, I smiled when he finally calm down in my arms.

Even though I was doing this, I could still feel her eyes on me. So I turned to see her still looking at me.

Probably thinking of calling the cops on me. Hopefully it will be police oppa who will come. Or maybe not.

I gave her another smile, then turn to leave with Lee and my babies.

Then suddenly, I heard it. Her voice which was something that I’ve been longing to hear.

What? Of course I’ve hear her on TV and all. But this is different. This was her talking TO me and only me.

“Thank you!” she yelled.

My heart pounded like a hammer. All I could do was just smile and nod.

When we got to the road, we saw taxi and police oppa standing there smiling from one ear to the other.

I knew that they saw the whole thing and were saving the teasing for later.

And I was right. For the rest of the trip, they kept teasing me about, and thanks to them, my kids found a new nickname for me ‘tomato’. Why? Because my face was red at a tomato according to them and Lee who sided with them.

When we got back to Malaysia, work became even more busy.

After two months, it finally was a bit quiet but still busy. As for the shop in Australia, it was doing so well that we had to renovate it, to make the shop and diner bigger.

Luckily most of my employees over there knew how to construct so they did the construction there. Which was fun according to my friend who ran the shop there.

Lee left for a month to go spend time with her boyfriend, Jay. Another childhood friend of mine. They both have been sweethearts for years now. Too sweet for me though. I’ve been telling Jay to propose already but you can say his nervous like hell about these things, even though he doesn’t show it.

Juin took over for Lee. Saying that she needed time away from her family. She looked drain and half dead when she arrived. But after a week with us, she started to recover.

Juin told me how she has been the middle, for Shawn and his family to Steph and her family. And also how Shawn has been trying to get her to help him to get the babies.

I’ll admit was pissed off when she told me this, but some part of me told me that his was just being a dad.

I told Juin that she could live here with us, and work in the shop with us if she wanted. But Juin refused, she wouldn’t leave her family just because of that. And I respected that.

When Lee got back, she was beaming. When I say beaming, I mean that you can tell that she had the time of her life. She told Juin to stay a few more days and Juin agreed.

After a week, Juin had to go back to her home. And everything was back to normal.

That night after putting the kids to bed, I went to the couch where Lee was and sat next to her. She immediately lean her head on my shoulder and held my hand.

I could tell that she wanted the say ‘I missed you.’ By the way she looked. Smiling I just gave her kiss on the head and rest my head on hers.

We stayed like this for what felt like hours. Unlike the others, whenever I was alone with Lee, even while we were kids, we would stay like this just to relax and allow peace to flow into us. This was our peaceful time.

Soon the months past, and it was time to send Ruki and Raki to Kinddy (Short for kindergarten).

Ruki seem excited but Raki was the worry. He is always quiet and shy with others except to me. Even to Lee he wouldn’t do or say much.

As we were touring the school, I took Raki aside and told Lee to take Ruki home. Lee knew what I was going to do, nodded and took Ruki home.

When they left, I took Raki to his class room, told him to sit on his seat. Raki walked over and sat on his desk, giving me a puzzled look.

I walked over to him and next on the desk next to him. While looking at him, I smiled. He looks so much like Steph.

Raki was still silent, waiting for me. Finally after looking into his eyes, I said “Raki. Do you understand where we are?”,

He looked around and then looked at his desk and answered “School.”,

“That’s right. School is part of your life. It is something very important. Everyone has to go to school before they can go to work.”,

Raki nodded in response.

I looked at him, and smiled a little, then said, “I know you don’t like this change. But change it a must. Without change you and your sister would never grow up. You both would never understand all the things in this world without change. And I know you’re a strong boy, and that you will be a good boy. This is part of your life now. And I need you here to watch over your sister while I’m not here.”,

“Why can’t you be here?” he asked,

“Cause this is a change where you must go through without me.” I answered him with a warm smile.

Raki then walked over to me and hugged me. I could tell that he still didn’t like this, but he had accepted this. Knowing him, he will be a good boy, he won’t make a fuss or cry. And he will keep his promise to watch over his sister for me.

It took awhile but both Ruki and Raki had gotten use to going to school now. They both would always hold hands while they were in school.

Smiling, I knew Raki was okay now. It was a bit sad at first, but change is must.

After months of working, taking and picking the kids from school, and helping them with their homework (which Lee did most of the time). Finally it was the time to go back to Korea. Luckily the school holidays were on the same month that we had to go.

Ruki and Raki were excited. They had finished packing before Lee and I even started. Apparently they wanted to help us pack. Eek! My babies are angels!

Ruki was help Lee pack while Raki was helping me. After getting everything that we needed ready, Raki asked “Why do we go back to Korea this time every year? Why not during a different time?”,

I looked at Raki, shocked. I really wasn’t prepared for this.

“Aaaa... cause it’s during this time that it’s special for me.” I finally manage to say.

“How is it special?” asked Ruki,

I turn to look at her, and saw Lee smiling away. Thinking that this is funny.

“Well, you can say it is only this time that an angel would appear.” I answered.

Both Ruki and Raki got excited when I said that.

“Will we get to see an angel? Really?”,

“Maybe. But angel’s only appear to the person...... they are assign to.”,

“So we might not get to see an angel?” asked Ruki, sad at my answer.

“Don’t worry. One day your very own angel will come and appear in front of you.”.

After saying that, both Ruki and Raki got excited again, and started to jump for joy. They both decided to pack their drawing kit so that they could draw out the angel when they see it.

After they both left the room, I let out a sigh of relief.

Lee chuckled while coming over to me, and whispered, “Sooner or later you will have to tell them the truth about your angel.”.

“Later. Always later.” I whisper back.
