Destined - Chapter 1

Killer Soul-mates

“Hi Sooyoung,”

“Sooyoung, you look great,”

“Your outfit looks fantastic,” They said in awe as Sooyoung passed them by. Her lips played a smile in return as she paced herself towards her next class, running her fingers through her brown locks.

It was nothing new. Sooyoung always received comments like this. At first she didn’t know what she had done to receive this much attention. She merely assumed that she was the average girl who cared for herself and her future. It was this that caused her not to attempt too much to fit in with her appears, avoiding usual procedures. She was already accepted to go to Oxford University in England next fall, offering her intelligence to those who were in need, considerate towards her peers. Everyone wanted to be in her company, a friend.

She paused by her locker, pondering over whether she required any textbooks. Heaving a sigh, she brushed her hand across the cool metal painted in a deep shade of blue as her slender fingers inched towards the lock. The padlock was heavy in her hand as she twisted the dial, pulling the locker door towards her as books and various objects became visible in her line of sight. Her hands rummaged through the books which sat at the pit of her backpack, questioning what class was approaching her quickly as the seconds solemnly ticked by on her watch.

“Hi Sooyoung,” she was overcome with surprise as the baritone voice sang in her ears. Sooyoung twisted her head in search of the owner, eyes widening at the sight of Choi Siwon. He leaned on the wall by her locker, propping his hand up on another's as he fiddled with the dial, running his fingers over the cool metal of the object. She couldn't help but watch him in a state of fascination and awe, unable to believe that someone of his status had dared to talk to her.

“Oh, S-si-won hi,” she stuttered, internally cursing herslef for the image she was portaying before him. Sooyoung yearned for the confidence to be able to talk to him freely, a confidence which didn't exist within her whenever he was in close proximity. It was as though he had some power over her, as his mere presence could immediately change the emotions within her.

“I was wondering if you were free this Friday. There’s a party a Donghae’s house and I would love for you to be my date,” he explained as she focused her eyes on his luscious lips that she urged to kiss. Her heart was racing at the invitation, the rate rapidly increasing as Sooyoung breathed slow and cool breaths, willing to return to a state of serenity that she wasn't capable of. On the inside, her heart was doing somersaults. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, extremely unexpected for they'd hardly talked in the past. Could it have been that he had admiration for her also?

“Uh, okay. Thanks,” she finally answered after a few moments in a paused state, the words frozen within her breath. Her fingers swept over the cover of the textbook as she lifted them out and headed towards her class as he sent her a smile. Her cheeks had flushed to a bright shade of pink, burning fervently as her shoes clicked upon the vinyl flooring of the isolated hallway.

It was strange that everyone had suddenly disappeared, no longer visible within her line of sight. Except for one boy at the end of the hallway – the new student who had arrived few moments earlier. Sooyoung didn’t know if it was his appearance or the way he conducted himself that had gained him so much unpopularity. It wasn’t like he didn’t try to make friends; it was just that nobody would want to. Sooyoung felt slightly bad for him, a hint of guilt within her, as she spotted him during those brief moments when they passed. She somewhat wanted to try and assist him but was always dragged away by the others as the moment neared. But by the way he was standing there it looked as if he had been waiting for her.

“Oh Sooyoung, I’ll pick you up at 7,” Siwon called from behind, standing at the other end of the hallway as she was about to turn the corner into the stranger's path. She turned briefly, her lips curling into a jovial smile. Her eyes directed forward once more to find the boy had disappeared, his presence no longer upon her. That’s strange. Wasn’t he just there? She thought curiously as she scanned her eyes over the surroundings. Her eyes landed on the clock on the wall as it read 11:45, the minutes solemnly ticking by as she realised she was 10 minutes late. She left her thoughts of the stranger behind as she dashed to her next class, hoping that her teacher would be forgiving.

....

History class - in Sooyoung's opinion- happened to be one of the most time consuming, endless subjects of the day. One which Sooyoung couldn't bring herself to enjoy. The teacher stood at the head of the room, pacing himself back and forth as his lecture continued over the Second World War – a subject that she was sure she had enough information about from past lessons. Her head unconciously lowered until its weight was supported by the desk, her arms lifted until they could cushion her forehead. Slowly, her eyelids willed to close, drowsily blinking until they squeezed shut and she could see nothing but complete darkness.

Her mind travelled to the land of her dreams while the teacher had not yet noticed that her presence within the room had been lost. She was free to drift off through the unconcious state that had come over her in the time that had passed, slow moments ticking at the hands of the clock.

“I don’t understand. What is it that you are trying to tell me, General?”  There was questioning and curiosity within the girls tone as she turned to the man at her left.

Her nose wrinkled at the foul smells of the dirt and animals nearby, lifting her hand as she pinched her nostrils close. Surrounded by greenery on all sides, the place she called home was far into the distance, barely visible in the backdrop of the peaks of the tall trees. The sky had a dark overcast of storm clouds which drifted freely above her head, a few diamonds pulsing through as the moon bestowed a dim light upon her, acting as a guide through complete darkness. Her fingers inched away from the tip of the candle within her grip, avoiding the lukewarm drips of the wax which cascaded to the ground below.

“I’m not who you think I am Princess,” the man she addressed as General heaved a deep sigh, brushing his fingers through the tufts of his hair as he lifted the hat from his head. A breeze of cool wind washed over them from the distance as he anticipated her next question.

“You are a General, what else could you be? Unless you’re an impostor,” she replied, infuriation within her eyes as she questioned for him to return a simple answer. He struggled to give a response, a blankness lingering within his mind. He had expected that the truth was going to have to come out sometime. But he didn't know that it would come so soon.

“I’m a-” his words were cut off, her dream shattering to pieces before his answer was completed.

“You’re a what!” Sooyoung shrieked, leaping from her seat. Her eyes widened as she returned to reality, scanning her eyes frantically around the room in shock. Their harsh glares directed towards her, burning holes through her head as a faint giggle was audible in the backdrop. The teacher had twisted himself until he faced the class, eyebrows raised in confusion as a sigh slipped from his lips. He pressed his palm upon his forehead as he came to a realisation of what was occuring before him

“Choi Sooyoung, I’m not even going to ask what you meant. Sit down,” the teacher called, turning back to the board as he flicked through the pages of the textbook upon his desk.

Sooyoung had transcended into a deep red in embarassment as she slowly sunk into the seat. Her face buried into her hands as she swept the strands of hair from her forehead. The teacher resumed speaking, the lecture continuing as if it had never happened. Sooyoung couldnt help but feel an eagerness within her, to find out what ‘the General’ had to say to the girl. Whatever it was, it was going to be shocking. Perhaps she had even had the dream for a reason, though it did not seem clear at the moment. Maybe it was a message, a warning. But she could never have been sure.

“Psst,” a voice whispered from behind, as if it was calling out to her personally. She twisted her head, scanning her eyes over the room but found that she was not in anyone's attention.

“Psst,” the voice repeated, the volume of the call slowly increased.

Sooyoung ignored the call, lifting her head briefly to glance at her textbook before she lowered her head and avoided the eyes of her classmates. She didn't want any more trouble, already being late to class and falling asleep in the middle of a lesson. It was unlike her usual behaviour. But the sudden touch on her back caused her head to jolt upwards, knowing that if she didn't find the source of annoyance then it would continue until the end of the lesson. Her head ce more, briefly meeting the eyes of the boy behind her. She recognised him immediately as the one who had watched her earlier in the hallway as he leaned forward, placing a torn sheet of paper into her grip.

Her eyebrow raised immediately, turning forward before the teacher had noticed. The tips of her slender fingers swept over the wrinkled quality it was in, pulling the fold apart until the message within could be easily seen. Watch out. Don’t go out at night! She furrowed her eyebrows confusion, scrunching the piece of paper in her hand to place it in her jacket pocket. Unable to understand it's purpose, she questioned that he was merely joking around with her, fooling around with her emotions.

Once the bell rang, signalling the end of the class, she felt a wave of relief come over her. Without daring to turn back, she lifted her bag from the ground, running out eagerly for lunch. The whole day had gone from peculiar to unbelievably strange. She had no idea what to expect next.

......

“Thank you so much Sooyoung. I don’t know what I would do without you. Have a nice evening,” the elderly women called as Sooyoung swept her hand over the cover of another book, placing it upon the bookshelf among the others.  She turned her head immediately to meet her warm, welcoming eyes as the woman smiled gratefully, gesturing for her to return hom. Sooyoung paced herself forward, her movements drowsy from lack of rest as she left the shop, waving her hand in goodbye as she exited the fervent heat of the room.

She had gone straight from school to volunteer in the bookstore, her normal Wednesday routine. Sooyoung knew that after the woman's husband had died, she struggled to keep the shop open and without her help, it would have closed months earlier. Hours had passed since dusk, the sun replaced with the dim brightness of the moon and stars that were barely visible beneath the high amounts of light which radiated from the city. The streets were isolated, the faint clicking of her heels audible as she strode through the streets, not realising that the time read 11pm on her wristwatch.

At the end of the alleyway, just as she was in close proximity to her home, a group of drunk men had gathered, blocking her path. Empty beer cans were scattered across the ground surrounding them as they geered and sang in their intoxicated state, what she would have found as intimidating and rude. Her attempt to slip past them without noticing her presence was not appreciated as she brought herself to their unwanted attention, her feet crunching upon the leaves that sat frozen upon the ground.

“Look what we have here – a high school girl,” one announced as she slowly approached them, calling out to the others as he scanned his eyes leisurely over her features. She only wished that she had taken the other route home, perhaps left earlier to avoid them. But what fate had plannned was a mystery and she was never to know how her life would span out over her years.

“Hey there, gorgeous. What are you doing here at this time?” another asked as he paced himself closer to her until they were mere inches apart. The vile stench of alcohol upon him lingered in the air unpleasantly, sending a nausea through her until it sat in the pit of her stomach. His hand lifted as it brushed over her ashen pale cheeks, her body shivering in fear and the vast amounts of cold which surrounded her.

“If you don’t mind, I have to go,” she replied, trying to wriggle away from his grasp before anything worse could occur.

“What’s the rush? I’m sure you can stay. We can have a lot of fun together,” he replied almost immediately. His hand fastened around her wrist as he pulled Sooyoung towards him until there was minimal space between them. The atmosphere around them dropped into a state of awkwardness, a tension which could not be described. She couldn't help but fear the worst as his head leaned forward, his breath warm upon her cheeks.

“Let me go!” she shrieked, unconciously pacing herself backwards as her foot jolted forward, kicking him in his sensitive area before she was unable to control her emotions. The others rushed forwards, clenching her wrists, digging the sharpness of their nails into her skin as the other dropped to the ground, gasping in pain.

“Don’t worry sweetheart, we’re not going to do anything bad to you – we’re just having fun that’s all,” they cooed, trying to make it as though the way they were treating her was acceptable beahviour. She continued to wriggle within their grasp, trying to run away but to no avail. She was harshly pulled back, her sleeves torn in the process as a single tear sat upon her cheek, sliding along the length of her face. Her emotions were no longer able to be suppressed within.

“She said let her go," a deep baritone voice spoke from the backdrop. Her head twisted immediately at the sound of his voice, a sulty and mysterious quality within it that drew her forward. Sooyoung's eyes directed immediately upon the brightness of his hair, a light blonde, as tufts of his hair brushed upon his forehead. He was dashingly handsome and she couldn't help but feel a sense of awe for his courage.

“What makes you thing we’re going to listen to you?” one asked as he strode forward as a form of intimidation.

The boy lifted his hands from his pockets which had plunged within them like weights, shifting his forward through miniscule steps until his face was few inches apart from the other man's. He spat distastefully upon the other's face while he reeled back in distaste, whipping his hand forward at great speed as it smacked across the drunks face. The man staggered backwards, clenching his nostils as the blood flowed out with ease. Others rushed forward in defence but they were in no match for him, not affected by their intimidating glares even in the slightest wat. His lips curled into a smile at the thought of their efforts as their eyes widened in fear.

“You little bastard! We'll come back for you!"

Sooyoung was released from their grip almost immediately as they fled the scene, cascading to the ground as her head smacked upon the hard concrete below their feet. She ran her fingers through her hair, ensuring that there were no cuts or bruising except the visible marks where they had held her arms. Her head lifted, scanning her eyes over her surroundings to find her saviour that was nowhere to be seen. She couldn't help but think that it was somehow his duty to save her. Like he was her guardian angel, her conscience, something upon those lines. But she was grateful for the bravery he portrayed.

“Hello, is anyone there?” she asked curiously. There was no response as a gentle breeze flew past her ears. "Thank you."
