a few common phrases, words and sentences are spoken when the name lee jiheon is mentioned in pledis entertainment. "who?", "oh! that girl!", "oh, the pretty girl that was in unpretty rapstar 3!" and it really seems like jiheon doesn't stand out in a crowd much asides from those facts about herself. but that's not the people who actually know her, have met her and have interacted with her would say. no, they'd explain her as "the korean luna lovegood", which is not that far off, but not really accurate either. calm, soft-spoken and lost in her own world at times, jiheon is like a breath of fresh air among the chaos that is the sixteen members, usually choosing to sit back and watch as the other members cause chaos, act rowdy and speak way too loudly for her own good. fellow sixteen member choi seunghwa describes jiheon as "the token silent person who people listen to when she speaks up", which might be the most accurate description of lee jiheon ever. as she generally chooses to be quiet and speak when she thinks she should, when she does speak, her opinions are valued.
that's not all there is to jiheon either. she does seem like the person who wouldn't get involved in anything in order to protect herself, right? absolutely not. on the contrary, jiheon is straightforward, isn't afraid to stand up for people and call out bull. due to her less-than-great experiences in life and feeling bad for not being able to protect herself, jiheon now projects this protectiveness onto the sixteen members and other trainees, not in the mother bear-like way minju does and most certainly not lurking in the shadows, but like a firecracker bursting quickly but leaving the effects on people, regardless of distance. her life experiences has also made her a good empathizer even though she tries to bury it deep down and use a logical approach when analyzing or assessing things. because of what she went through, she's able to lend a listening ear whenever someone needs one even though she's not the best person at giving advice, which is something people who just need someone to listen appreciate.
ever since she was a child, one thing her parents have taught jiheon is to finish whatever it is that she started, ranging from short-term goals to long-term ones. this valuable life lesson from her parents is the reason why jiheon is the enthusiastic person she is when it comes to achieving goals she has set up for herself. the group needs to memorize a tough dance break routine before the music video shooting? watch her spend the whole night in the studio practicing said routine. having goals, according to jiheon, gives life purpose and she's quick to beat herself to the ground when the goals aren't met on time. this is the reason why she's very afraid of failure, being successful, especially with sixteen, is her biggest goal in life and she doesn't want to leave the industry as a result of failing to achieve her biggest goal.
jiheon is an introverted person. she's the person that would rather spend an entire day on her own after a day of going out rather than going out again or stay in with a really good book, a coffee and a warm blanket on a rainy day while some people side-eyeing narae may prefer to go out and have a full on dance battle out in the pouring rain without caring about whether they'd get sick or not. does she wish she could do things without a care in the world sometimes? absolutely. but it's usually a fleeting thought and it usually goes away when she sees someone do something stupid or careless, like haenim spraying hand sanitizer into his eyes because he's burnt out from producing.
jiheon is, surprisingly, a very emotional person even though she denies it vehemently. her life experiences only show her that showing emotion will lead to you being exploited for it, because you're provoking the other person. so, what does she do? turn the other cheek and avoid conflict, which ties right into the reserved and passive side that she has. there's nothing she hates more in the world than conflict and confrontations, so she chooses to avoid it or solve it as fast as she can. she's not emotionally constipated, she can most definitely show emotion but she's usually the one calming the members down if they've had their first win or something like that. she prefers to deal with her emotions on her own in a clear mindset, but will have no problem expressing herself if she's sure that you're in a good mindset to listen to her. the moment she catches a whiff of bad mental state, she shuts the entire "emotion talk" down and focuses on you instead.
jiheon's motivated personality also ties into her perfectionism. once again, it's not at stanley kubrick's level, but there are definitely times where the leader either had to pick her up herself or send someone to pick her up from the practice room because jiheon is running herself to the ground trying to do a routine perfectly. no mistakes can be condoned for jiheon and it leads to more burn outs and mental breakdowns than she'd like. at times like this, she can go down two avenues: the good one or the bad one. the good one is that she takes a long break until she feels better mentally to tackle the issue at hand again. the bad one is that she pushes herself more and more until she's stressed out to the max and lashing out at everyone. thankfully, years of practice and receiving lots of lectures from her trainers has helped her go down the good avenue more than the bad one, although the bad one happens at times as well.
jiheon's biggest downfall, however, has to be her self-depreciating habits. due to all the bullying she has experienced in her lifetime, she's quick to blame and doubt herself when something goes wrong. the choreography isn't mastered on time? there has to be a part jiheon is doing wrong. the group didn't get their first win? jiheon didn't show enough presence on stage. it's never anyone else's fault. only hers. and no one else is to blame.
one thing jiheon excels at is sarcasm and sass, it's basically her second language. while some members would just observe and say nothing, jiheon observes and uses her observations as figurative ammunition to load her gun of roasting material and shoot you with it. if you've blown her fuse, she can roast you like there's no tomorrow and isn't afraid to use controversial remarks to do so.
overall, jiheon is an enigma. what she went through in life has led to her putting up walls around herself, leaving her in her own complicated, tangled maze of emotions. she just needs someone to either pull her out, or sit with her. it doesn't matter which. just accompany her.
BACKGROUND
lee jiheon was born in daegu as the only daughter of, at then, two siblings, having a sister 4 years her senior named jihyun. jiheon was the apple of her parents' eye, her family and her older sister doted on her like no other and always spent every free time they had with her. but, they were still busy nonetheless and in the mornings, jiheon would go to a nursery school until one of her parents could pick her up.
things started changing for jiheon when she was four years old. she started waking up at odd hours into the night with her body covered in sweat and her skin would itch so badly that she wanted nothing more than to rip it out at times. but the worst part of it all? jiheon started to experience fainting spells. she would pass out after exerting too much energy while playing outside with her friends and wake up in her parents' car. as jiheon's mother had given birth to a baby boy two years prior, they were busy taking care of him but they didn't neglect their daughter either, catering to her every need. after a week of consistent fainting spells, one day, one of jiheon's teachers noticed a lump in her neck during nap time, and called her parents to let them know. jiheon was immediately taken to the hospital by her parents and were given dreadful results. childhood lymphoma. her parents were devastated. their daughter? had cancer? while the doctor that diagnosed jiheon had told them an early diagnosis is always better, they were worried for their child.
treatment was hell for jiheon. she was constantly dizzy and nauseous and couldn't eat properly. she lost a lot of weight as a result, and in return, became even more sick. there was a time where she was so sick, in fact, that her parents were basically told to give up on her, that she wouldn't survive. but her parents never gave up on their daughter, and jiheon's condition started to improve, being declared cancer-free at the age of seven.
one of the things that kept jiheon's mood up during her treatment was music, with her family playing music and watching music shows on tv with her. they kept doing that after she recovered, seeing how happy it made her, and when jiheon started attending elementary school, she took a particular interest in music classes. she would scribble lyrics down when she could and music became a way out for her.
in 2009, when jiheon was, once again, sat in front of the tv watching music shows, she came across a group of four girls, dressed in astronaut-like outfits and as soon as the music started, one girl started rapping, and jiheon fell in love. that group was 2ne1, who had made their debut with fire that year, and the girl that was rapping was none other than cl. cl became a role model at the time for the 11-year-old jiheon and got her into rapping. and two years after that event, a 13-year old jiheon started her underground rap career by performing her self-written raps on streets to earn some extra cash. for two years, every day, after school, she'd do busking events on the streets of daegu. and during one of those days, jiheon was approached by a man in a formal suit and given a card, the man telling her he'd love to see her among their trainees.
when she got home that day, she showed her parents the card and told them about what happened, also telling them her rap performances and her dreams of becoming an idol. her parents' reactions were surprising to her. she thought they wouldn't be accepting since idolhood didn't seem like a stable career path. but they were completely accepting, telling her they had known she wanted to be an idol for a long while. and after a successful audition, in 2013, jiheon officially became a trainee under sm entertainment, one of the big 3 three companies in south korea.

jiheon has never been seen as beautiful by the korean beauty standards, her eyes aren't big and round despite having double eyelids, they're more almond-shaped and reminiscent of a cat's, her nose is small but slightly flat and while she does have a somewhat defined face, she has a lot of baby fat on her cheeks, which is genetical in all of her siblings. none of those are fit for the beauty standards, but it's okay, jiheon never really saw herself as beautiful anyway.
one thing she does have, however, is a curvaceous body packed with muscle in all the right places due to all her years of training and regular exercise, with defined biceps when flexed and faint lines of abs being visible when she wears cropped or otherwise short tops. while jiheon keeps her hair in a short bob with straight across bangs in a blonde color for the time being, she's open to dyeing and growing her hair out in the future. she especially wants to try getting a split dye job.
FASHION
despite her tomboyish and rough appearance, jiheon's sense of fashion depicts somewhat of an opposition, in the sense that she enjoys looking cute and, for the lack of a better word, girly most of the time: cute skirts of varying lengths and patterns, high-waisted shorts, skinny jeans, dresses and the like. sweatpants and matching sets, good quality and comfortable shirts and hoodies, sneakers and other types of good quality shoes made out of durable material also take up a good amount of space in her closet, though those are mainly used for dance practice and workout purposes. accessories-wise, jiheon tends to keep her neck and wrists free unless her stylists put them on her since accessories can get somewhat tangled when she's dancing. safe to say, the only accessories she uses are her piercings and maybe a few rings on her fingers from time to time.

to add steel to her beauty, jiheon has a lot of piercings, gunning for the title of the sixteen member with the most piercings, with 9 piercings on her left ear and 8 on her right ear. she also has her navel pierced. as for tattoos, she doesn't come to play either. she has two visible tattoos, a cross tattoo on the side of her left wrist, symbolizing her christian faith, and a snowdrop on the back of her neck, symbolizing her recovery from childhood lymphoma. while daffodils are commonly used to symbolize hope for cancer patients, jiheon chose to get a snowdrop as they tend to bloom in winter and her recovery news came right around the blooming period for snowdrops. other than those two, she has five butterflies on her left shoulder, symbolizing her family (parents, older sister, herself and younger brother), "dare to dream" on the right side of her ribcage, a shooting star on the inside of her right index finger, leo (her sign) on her left ankle and sun, moon and stars on her left hip.

♮ anime & manga. she loves the soundtracks and the plots, and is just an overall weeb. her favorite animes are kimetsu no yaiba (demon slayer), black clover, jujutsu kaisen, attack on titan, one piece and haikyuu. if you're looking for someone to -talk season 1 eren jaeger with, jiheon is the perfect person.
♮ alcohol. she's not an alcoholic, everyone! she does enjoy drinking though and will usually resort to it if she's feeling very stressed, along with a cigarette or two. she knows when to stop though.
♮ art. from music to painting, she appreciates art in all shapes and forms.
♮ food. who doesn't? it can be warm and comforting, and it can also be sweet and indulging. it's the best of both worlds.

♮ piercings. she thinks it looks super aesthetic, both on herself and on others. she's content with the amount of piercings she has though.

♮ cheaters as someone who has been cheated on before, it's safe to say that jiheon doesn't like them. like, is the thrill more important to you than being caught?
♮ cucumbers she doesn't know if it's her taste buds or if cucumbers actually taste like that but they're bitter and make her gag. if there's cucumbers in a dish, best bet that jiheon is asking the servers if they can make her dish without cucumbers.

♮ sharp smells like plain hand sanitizer or disinfectant. the scented hand sanitizers are not too bad but a sharp smelling room is guaranteed to get a nose scrunch from her.

HOBBIES
♮ exercising in order to maintain her health and be able to do moves with ease, she exercises regularly.
♮ gaming she picked up gaming from a friend in high school, who introduced her to strategy games like starcraft. she can't find the time to game as much as she used to, but she does play genshin impact when she can. her current team is kokomi, nahida, raiden shogun and kazuha.
♮ online shopping mostly makeup and skincare products, but she also enjoys ordering clothes and other stuff online as well. the dorm receives a lot of packages because of her.

♮ bye-lingual jiheon can speak both korean and english, but she's slowly losing vocabulary in both languages. sometimes she speaks in a mixture of korean and english so horribly that only the fellow english-korean bilingual trainees in pledis entertainment, and later on hybe, can understand her. she knows a variety of swears or roasts in the english language though and will not hesitate to use them if she gets angry.
♮ crushing jiheon doesn't really make it obvious that she's crushing on someone but those people do tend to escape her snarky remarks and roasting more often. but because she has favorites among pledis entertainment and later on hybe (and those people being the sixteen members and some of her other friends), she usually lets them off the hook, so people can't really tell she's crushing on or has had a crush on someone unless she tells them herself.
♮ eye twitch a common sign that jiheon is annoyed/angry is her eye twitching. and as her temper is very explosive, those who see jiheon's eye twitch should run for the hills, preferably for good because she won't hold back.
♮ love language similar to a lot of the members, jiheon's love language is quality time. that's how she enjoys spending most of her time with her friends and members, either cleaning, watching a movie or napping with them because some es are exhausted. it's them, they're some es.

the lee family
the lee family are a family that used to be close but have gotten even closer after the events that took place in their life, the events being jiheon's cancer diagnosis and recovery. as of now, they're unbreakable, sharing every little detail together, except for private matters of course. the lee family consists of the parents (suhwan & jiyeon) who own and operate their own makchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant in daegu, an older sister (jihyun, born 1994) who is an emergency department nurse and a younger brother (jihoon, born 2000) who is in his last year of high school as of 2018 and is studying diligently for his csat exam. they're all very supportive of jiheon's career as an idol, despite being concerned at first, and they always make sure to attend as many sixteen performances as they can while holding signs that have jiheon's and sixteen's names and faces on them.

guess it was expected, that jiheon and bodam would be close. not only are they the same age, are in the rap unit and are lyricists, they have both had… humbling experiences within their old companies, which happened to be one of the big three companies, with jiheon being in sm and bodam being in yg. with everyone being afraid of bodam due to her experience, aloof demeanor and tall height and imposing expressions, she was somewhat of a loner. well, this doesn't affect jiheon in the slightest. so she'd usually sit with the other girl in 16tv to work on her own lyrics. that's how their friendship started, just them sitting together in silence, writing lyrics. after a while, their interactions started including gestures, silently asking if the other needed help, and eventually, verbal conversation. bodam is jiheon's closest friend among the sixteen girls and someone she knows she can rely on. fans are also all aboard the #yunie ship, calling them the "4th gen rap queens"

as she was part of sm rookies back in the days, jiheon is close to the nct members that were part of sm rookies back in the days. they spent a majority of their time together and were truly close friends who shared a lot of things with each other. sometimes, jiheon likes to reminiscence the good times and they always bring a big smile onto her face. among the members of nct, she was closest to mark, taeyong, yuta, jaehyun and taeil, and hansol even though he's not an nct member. when she sees nct backstage, jiheon will most definitely bow ninety degrees since they're her seniors now and make small talk with them. she also tries to text and talk with taeil, taeyong and mark whenever she can.

ah yes, red velvet. the girl group jiheon was in the lineup of for a brief period of time and was even supposed to debut with but was deemed too young at the time. she didn't think it made sense, akdong musician's lee soohyun was born in 1999 but she still debuted before jiheon, so how come jiheon couldn't debut? she got her answer after she was placed in the lineup of red velvet after their "be natural" comeback as four members, along with another trainee named kim yerim, also known as yeri. but eventually, only yeri got in and jiheon couldn't debut. jiheon still supports red velvet and streams their comebacks, but it'd be a lie if she said she didn't resent them. she would bow and make small talk with them if she ran into them backstage, but wouldn't go out of her way to talk to them. among the members, jiheon was closest to irene, as the fellow daegu native took care of her like an older sister.

if you were to ask jiheon how she'd describe the 5th red velvet member, she'd answer "someone i used to know." and yeri would respond the same way. and well, they're not wrong, they did know each other. but there's so much more to lee jiheon and kim yerim's relationship than just "someone they used to know." they actually used to be close friends, promising that they'd debut together and they'd be okay. until lee sooman announced that red velvet would be adding another member to make it a five-member group and the candidates were yeri and jiheon. it seemed like a switch flipped then and there, and the air between the two once-friends became competitive in an unhealthy way, constantly trying to one up another to appeal to the higher-ups, so that they could get to debut instead of the other. eventually, yeri won the competition, securing her place as the 5th and youngest member of red velvet, being favored over jiheon by lee sooman due to her longer trainee time. similarly to red velvet, jiheon still supports yeri as well, but it'd be a lie if she said she didn't resent the younger girl. and once again, similar to red velvet, she'll bow and make small talk with yeri if she sees her backstage, but not go out of her own way to talk to the younger girl. overall, for jiheon, yeri is… a can of worms she'd rather not delve into. is there hope in fixing their relationship? maybe, but it definitely won't be a walk in the park.

♮ february, 2013 – march, 2015. when jiheon first joined sm entertainment, she realized how different the training culture was compared to her underground days. when she was doing her own thing, she had no set schedule, she could do her performances and work on other things whenever she wanted. but in the company, it was different. asides from rap, she was also taught how to sing and dance, and also taught idol manners, acting and etiquette. it felt suffocating at first, jiheon felt like her creativity was being chipped away at. but as she got into a set routine and started making friends, she realized that maybe it wasn't so bad after all, that her creativity could still be useful. she learned about rap techniques and proper music theory, eventually starting to make her own demos although none of them were picked by sm entertainment for their groups.
shortly afterwards, in 2014, jiheon was announced as an sm rookie alongside current red velvet member wendy and current nct member haechan, known back then as donghyuck. and shortly afterwards, red velvet made its' debut with 4 members, irene, seulgi, wendy (all sm rookies: irene and seulgi were introduced the year prior) and joy, with jiheon making a cameo in the music video for their debut song "happiness". just as her trainee contract was coming to an end, jiheon was told by lee sooman that she and yeri, another sm rookie who had been introduced after red velvet's debut, were being considered to be in the lineup of red velvet, so she signed another two-year trainee contract with sm entertainment. but in the end, only yeri got to debut as red velvet's 5th member, lee sooman favoring her due to her longer trainee time compared to jiheon. upset and resentful, jiheon decided to terminate her contract and leave sm entertainment.
♮ march, 2015 – november, 2015. during the nine months that jiheon spent as a free agent, she continued performing underground and auditioning for any company or show that would bring her any type of recognition, including but not limited to unpretty rapstar and show me the money. it was during this period where she was scouted by pledis, after one of her busking performances on the street of hongdae. as she was packing up her bag to leave, jiheon was stopped by someone.
"miss, excuse me!" turning around, she saw a man dressed in a smart suit and tie approaching her. "are you lee jiheon?"
"yes, that is i." she gave the man a questioning look, pulling her face mask down.
"i was hoping that it would be you." the man smiled and extended his hand out to her, revealing a business card. taking the card, jiheon gave it a once-over.

"i'm a representative of pledis entertainment and we were told to not miss you as soon as we heard through the grapevine that you were a free agent." the man explained. "we're holding auditions soon, we hope we can get to see you there as well."
♮ november, 2015 – present. pledis was a smaller company compared to sm entertainment but its' artists were well-known in the industry as well, after school, nu'est, hello venus, these were groups jiheon had all heard of. the company being on a smaller scale did wonders for jiheon. at sm, it constantly felt like everyone was improving and jiheon felt like she was lacking, feeling like an ordinary coin among a whole pouch of coins. lessons weren't hard to adapt to, but they were in smaller groups and as such, were more personal and interactive. while she was thrown into 16tv two months after her arrival at pledis, being in pledis brought jiheon her creativity back and that's what she's the most thankful about, really.
