Twelve

Friends...

“Unnie, you did great!”

“You think?” Chaerin said nervously.

“Yes! I think they liked your confidence.” MInzy said happily. Their meeting lasted for about a little over an hour.

“Thanks, Mingkky-ah. I couldn’t have done it without you.” Chaerin said sincerely.

“You should be thanking Jiyong oppa. He was the one who made this happen.” Minzy said while fixing their stuff. “He just called me and said to come here and that everything’s ready. I think he was a little shy to tell you himself.” Minzy giggled. “He’s sweet, right unnie?”

Chaerin didn’t answer but just smiled. Her mind bringing back memories she already decided to bury in the past.

“How’d it go?” Jiyong asked as soon as Chaerin exited the room.

Chaerin smiled at him. “It went fine. Thank you. For making this happen. It was really important.”

“I know.” Jiyong smiled back. He took the bag full of folders that Chaerin was carrying and also the briefcase that Minzy was carrying and walked in the front.

“Where we going?” Chaerin asked when they passed the turn that led to Haru’s room.

“I already told noona that we’ll come back next time and Haru’s still asleep.”

“Unnie, I think you’re going on a date. Yihhh.” Minzy whispered to Chaerin giddily.

“Shut up.” Chaerin whispered back, her heart pounding against her chest.

“Unnie, I’ll go back to the company and fix the schedule for when Xin oppa will be back.” Minzy said while getting in her car. “And enjoy your date!” She said and winked before driving off to avoid seeing the death glares of Chaerin.

Jiyong was already in the driver’s seat, his hands already getting clammy. He was nervous as . Chaerin slowly sat in the passenger’s seat looking all chill but her chest was still pounding. She just has the best poker face.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.” Jiyong smiled.

Chaerin was only slightly surprised that Jiyong brought her to his pension. It was always the place he felt most comfortable in.

“You redecorated.” She started.

“Yeah… my mom felt like we needed a change. I did too.” Jiyong replied.

“It’s nice.” She complimented.

“Thanks. I’m glad you like it.” Jiyong smiled.

“Oh-“ Chaerin stopped at a picture he saw hanging on the wall.

Jiyong smiled. “I was so happy when I saw that in your apartment.”

“How--?”

“I had it for some time now. I begged Xin to give me a copy before. I even bribed him. He’s a scheming little .” Jiyong chuckled remembering how Xin forced him to give him his beloved Rick Owens shoes for that picture.

Chaerin couldn’t help but smile and feel touched.

“Come. You need to see the garden!” Jiyong excitedly said and led her out.

“Wow.” Was the only word Chaerin could say.

“I finally found it.” Jiyong said proudly while looking at the middle ground which has a large swing and the grassy ground surrounded by super soft looking pillows. “You always said that if you were to put something here it would be a swing… so we could have picnics with our kids.” Jiyong said making Chaerin’s heart pick up its beat. “Do you remember?” he asked.

Chaerin nodded her head slowly, reminiscing that time they were together.

Jiyong took her hand and led her to it, making her sit on the swing and him beside her.

“Chae… I—I really wanna make this right.” Jiyong said and held both her hands. “Please give me a chance. I want a do-over. I want us to be together again. I want you. Chae, I love you…”

Chaerin stared at their hands that seem to fit perfectly together. She felt tears cloud her eyes. A flood of emotions overwhelmed her and she couldn’t speak. She knew she wanted this too.

“Ji… we’re just too… ed.” She said, and looked away. “We have too much baggage. There’s too many issues.”

“Then let’s fix them. Let’s fix them one at a time.” Jiyong pleaded.

“Ji—“

“Please. Please give me this one chance. I promise I’ll do better.” Jiyong laid his head in their hands hoping and praying that Chaerin would say yes.

Chaerin looked at Jiyong and her heart melted. She removed one hand from his hold and started caressing his head which was still laid down. She could hear his silent sobs and feel the tears on their hands.

“Ji… stop crying.” She whispered and Jiyong brought his face up only to show red eyes filled with tears.

Chaerin held his cheek and wiped the tears with her thumb. Jiyong couldn’t stop them from rolling down his eyes. He’s feeling too much emotion and apart from that, he’s feeling desperate too. Desperate for her. To hold her. To touch her. To be hers again.

“Please… please Chae. Just give me one chance. I promise… I promise I will be better.” He said in between sobs.

Chaerin couldn’t help but have teary eyes. She didn’t want to see him crying.

“Ji…” she didn’t know what the right thing to do or to say is. Her heart and her mind are having an intense battle right now. She loves him. She knew that. But what she wasn’t sure about was if they could overcome or get over what happened to them. There were just too many things.

After a small while, Jiyong managed to control himself and stopped the tears. Until then, no one spoke. The wind was getting colder by the minute and it looked like it was going to rain.

By then, Jiyong lost hope.

Chaerin still gave him no answer so he was left to assume one thing… which was the worst scenario.

They stayed silent like that for a bit longer until Jiyong stood up still holding her hand and went back to the pension.

He led her to sit on the couch while he went and made them something warm to drink.

“I really ed up huh?” It was a rhetorical question.

“Ji…”

“No Chae, I’m sorry I came down on you like that.” Jiyong said. He knew Chaerin just couldn’t say she didn’t want him anymore after seeing him break down like that. She wasn’t heartless… but he couldn’t let her go. He just couldn’t. “I’m a selfish bastard, I know. But I just can’t imagine you with someone else. I don’t want to. So I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for not being able to let you go. I just cant… but if someday, my ed up heart decided to man up and let you be happy… I swear, I swear I’ll leave you alone. I’ll go as far away as possible so I wouldn’t hurt you anymore. I’ll let you go”

Chaerin choked up. But isn’t that what she wanted? For him to leave her alone so they’ll move on, which was the best for everyone. So why were her tears threatening to fall? Why was there a burning sensation at the back of ? Why did she want him to just hold her and give her the comfort that he alone could give?

Damn it.
