chaos
The Red ShoesThank you for reading and commenting. You guys always succeed to keep me going :)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Panic is unavoidable now. The people in the area where the roofing came down sputter away from the place, running into others, blocking the aisles. I can’t see very far because there’s a strong spotlight on us. But things are getting out of hand down there.
One of the security guys at the foot of the stage-ramp calls out to Jjong who is closest.
“Get down here, we’ll funnel you out.”
“I’m not going anywhere”, Jjong shouts, “get the people outta here, we’ll stay with Taemin.”
He throws a quick glance around at us and we’re all in, of course.
The security guy disappears.
The thundering dubstep continues. It’s not any song we know, just the beat with a random melody-line, like an electronic sample created by a computer. Taemin keeps moving but he looks totally lost. I guess we all feel the same, this is a freaking nightmare.
Minho still talks to the crowd or rather shouts over the music trying to calm people down.
I turn around to Kibum. He is staring at Taemin’s feet and when I look I see the red light has changed to green.
“I guess it’s safe as long as it’s green”, he shouts, then points towards the ceiling “that camera isn’t supposed to be there. I bet he’s watching us.”
I look up and he’s right. There’s a camera I haven’t seen during rehearsal.
Our guitar-player comes running towards us from the main stage. There’s a commotion down there too.
“We have at least two bombs tied to the scaffolding above the stage”, he yells, “there might be more backstage though.”
“Take the guys and get out of here”, Jonghyun shouts back, “just take the entire staff out, everyone backstage. Leave as fast as you can.”
The man hesitates and I almost smile. They are so loyal.
“MOVE”, Jjong yells but I can see he’s also touched.
The guy nods slightly then turns to run back when the music suddenly stops. Immediately I look at Taemin’s feet again. He has stopped dancing but keeps treading from one foot to the other nervously staring down at his shoes.
The panicking crowd is unaffected by the change. Everyone is trying to get to the exits, only a few people mainly the younger ones it seems are bravely listening to Minho who keeps talking unfazed by the chaos.
“Stand by”, Kibum says grabbing Taemin’s arm. The lights on Tae’s shoes are blinking again, this time in yellow. “Stand by”, Key repeats, “he’s changing tracks.”
And he’s right. A new sample starts, different beat, something like a waltz or ... I’m not sure.
“Six-eight times!” Kibum shouts, “he changed the beat, Taem.”
Taemin struggles to get into the rhythm but the blinking lights have turned red again and he’s almost panicking. When he makes an off-beat step there’s another detonation.
“I can’t do this!” He’s desperately looking around for help. I want to but I’m confused. There are people dying down there. The crowd is out of hand now. I see security overwhelmed by people trying to escape. But the exits seem to be blocked.
“Dance, Taemin, please!” Jjong shouts pleadingly, “dance before another one blows up.”
“Five, six, seven, eight ...” Kibums hoarse voice counts the beat over the microphone. He has come forward and starts an easy-going house step. After a second of hesitation Taemin follows, led by his Hyung’s pinpointed announcement, moving with him, sharing the burden ... calming down.
The lights turn green again.
