Kibum takes his cue, sits up, stretches and wakes Minho. We take turns prompted by the fanchants until we throw Taemin into starting position. Grabbing his leg I see the red light again, it’s coming from the thick sole of his shoe.

For a split second my eyes meet Kibum’s who is holding Taemin’s other leg. He’s seen it too.

I push it away with a simple ‘must be a special effect’ explanation and try not to mess up.

When I lift Jonghyun during the first bridge I look at Key again. He seems distracted, his eyes darting around, searching the vicinity.

I wonder what he’s looking for. He’s obviously worried.

Then we’re doing the gadget. I get ready for my propeller move, Kibum and Jonghyun grab Taemin’s legs again but just as I start rotating my arms Key suddenly shouts “take off the shoes!” into his microphone.

When I look he has already grabbed Taemin’s ankle, but Tae is too surprised to let go and kicks him away.

We somehow manage to go on. Kibum keeps dancing with us but we’re all confused and agitated now. What the is going on?

In spite of Keys faux pas everybody in the audience seems oblivious to the fact that something is seriously wrong, so there is just the usual applause and screams from the crowd when we collapse at the end of the song.

The lights go off and we need to line up for the next song which is “Lucifer” for the millions time. Over the noise of the excited fans I can hear Kibum and Taemin arguing.

“What’s your problem?” Taemin asks agitated.

“The shoes, there’s something wrong, take them off”, Key hisses, covering the microphone with his hand this time.

I wish we could just take a break to sort this out but we can’t stop now, the music’s already started again.

Taemin shoves Kibum away and there’s my cue to start singing. We move forward in a row, stopping for a stance. And when Taemin sets his right foot down again it’s suddenly obvious. The red light goes on again and starts blinking rapidly. We all see it now and I bet the front row in the audience too.

“STOP THE MUSIC!” Kibum shouts into the microphone, this time on purpose.

Taemin looks left and right totally lost. While Key makes a dive for his feet again I grab our staggering Maknae.

The music stops when the first explosion hits the stands on the far right. For a second the whole audience is silent. Then people start screaming.

We are dumbfounded. I let go of Taemin and like everybody else try to see what’s happening.

Minho, my quick-witted Minho, calls to order over his microphone: “Don’t panic”, he shouts, “please everybody don’t panic. Let security pass, follow their orders ...”

Kibum is still crouched down while Taemin is almost comically trying to avoid him.

“They’re CONNECTED”, Key yells at him, “your shoes are triggering something.”

“What?”

A thundering laugh over the main speakers shuts us up. I can’t help but thinking ‘is this a ing joke?’

“SHINEE’S BACK!” a man’s voice comes blaring through the marshal towers. “SHINEE’S BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK, HERE WE GO!”

Another explosion, this time to the far left, up in the corner where hopefully nobody was sitting. But I can’t see from where I stand.

Security is rushing up the aisles between the blocks but people are hesitant to run. Minho’s influence seems to work.

“YOU BETTER KEEP DANCING, TAEMINNIE!” the voice shouts.

Then a dubstep starts over the speakers. Kibum makes another attempt to rip the shoes of Taemin’s feet but is cut short by the next message:

“I WOULDN’T DO THAT, KIM KIBUM. TAKE THE SHOES OFF AND THE WHOLE ARENA BLOWS UP.”

Key stops in his movement.

Another explosion. One  of the beams holding up the roofing buckles and a big chunk of plaster and cement comes crashing down into the floor-audience.

People ... are ... hurt ...

I can’t believe this is happening. What?

“KEEP DANCING, TAEMINNIE!” the man hollers over the speaker, “OR EVERY FIFTEEN SECONDS ANOTHER BOMB DETONATES.”

There’s the laugh again.

“LIKE THEY SAY, YOU GOT IT IN YOUR SHOES, BOY.”

“Dance”, Kibum says, “dance for Christ’s sake, or the next bomb goes off.”

And Taemin starts to dance.
