xvi. Breakdown

It’s almost midnight and he happens to be at the still crowd of the agency private party when a ringing melody turns on his phone. He is surprised seeing the caller id as quickly finding a quiet spot outside the building.

“Hey.” Henry greets as silent greets his back on the other line. “Hello? How are you, Yewon-ah?”

There’s still a silent, but now he can hear a faint sound of her short breath. Then he only realizes she is holding a cry. His protective instinct is awake as he holding his breath to give her time.

“He, Henry-ah.” Yewon talks hoarsely. “I’m sorry.” She whispers. “I’m sorry to bother you this late.” She sniffs. “You, you don’t have to accept this call actually. You could just hang up, I’m fine with it.”

Pause.

Pause.

Pause.

“Kim Yewon, where are you?”

Once Henry launches the question, the sound of Yewon’s bawling is getting clearer.

“I, I mean I’m okay. I’m still here.” She manages to let some words out between her sob. “Still at this shady karaoke place although the ajhumma who owns the store shouting me to get off of her business place. I mean,” Her voice is getting hoarser. “I did make some mistakes, but, but,” She breaks into an awful sob. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t sing at karaoke, right?”
