That Man's Child

Hello, minhosims' here

Yesterday, 16 April is minhosims' 4th anniversary on AFF. Time flies so fast. I never know I would last this long!

At first I wanted to post a new chapter on that day to celebrate it but unfortunately my work got in the way :(

I want to thank you guys for taking care of me very well on this site. You never know how much your support mean to me. It's nice when you guys leave me a comment, letting me know what you think of the story that I write. Some of you even subscribe and upvote this story!! At moments like that, I feel like I do well, like I'm not that bad and can be better if I work harder. Thank you, really.

He climbed up the stairs in hurry, blaming the medium sized bag in his hand for slowing him down. It was for Jongki, the things inside the bag. He drove to Jinki’s apartment as soon as they finished picking things up. He wondered if his hyung was home yet but that sounded impossible. His hyung likely wouldn’t be at home until late at night.

He stopped in front of the door and knocked. He waited but no one answered the door for him which made him more anxious. He knocked again and called Jongki’s name. The child supposed to be at home. Jinki wouldn’t bring him to work.

“Uncle!” he turned around to see the source of the bubbly voice and saw Jongki standing by the door that he later learned belonged to Mrs. Park. A smile found its way to his face as he watched Jongki run to his open arms. “Uncle Jonghyun.” He said as Jonghyun hugged him and lifted him up.

“Did you wait for me?” Jongki only nodded and that was enough to make his heart swell in happiness.

“He was waiting for you since afternoon. He said you would come. He was a little lonely because Jihye was still at school.” Mrs. Park explained for him.

“I told him so yesterday. So he stayed with you on the day?”

“Hmm, but now I can leave him on your care.” She said as she handed Jonghyun the keys to Jinki’s apartment.

“Thank you very much, Mrs. Park. You may rest now. I’ll take care of Jongki.” Jonghyun sincerely thanked her before unlocking the door to Jinki’s apartment. The inside of the apartment was dark so Jonghyun roamed the wall to find the switch which he found with Jongki’s help. After the light , he paced to the couch, placing the bag on the table before rsesting himself on the couch.

Jongki immediately detached himself from Jonghyun’s hug and sat on his uncle’s lap. Jongki looked up on Jonghyun quietly and seriously as he was trying to read his uncle’s face. Jonghyun stared back to the little boy in front of him and couldn’t help but making funny faces that brought smiles upon Jongki’s face.

Jonghyun bent forward so they could be on the same eye level. “Did you wait for me?” he asked as he stared deep through the child’s eyes, searching for the pieces of him his mother talked about. Jongki didn’t say anything, only nodded his head on response as he stared back to his uncle as intense. “Did you wait for long?” Jongki nodded again. “Sorry, uncle has to work and return home to bring you some presents.” Jongki’s eyes lit up at the mention of presents which had Jonghyun smile on his cuteness. “Do you want to see them?” Jongki nodded again, a bit more eager this time.

Whatever his mother saw in Jongki’s eyes, it could wait. He had many time to find the answer. Now, it would be better for him to entertain the child who had waited for him. “I bring you the toys I used to play with when I was at your age.” He opened up the bag and let Jongki see what he had brought from home. He introduced each toys in which Jongki responded with astonishment. At the end, Jongki thanked him for the presents and told his uncle that he would take care of them well. Jonghyun followed and helped Jongki to arrange the plushies on his bed so he could sleep with them.

Jonghyun was about to tell Jongki his idea of a mini car race, his stomach growled embarrassingly loud.

“Jongki-ah, uncle is hungry. Have you had dinner?” Jonghyun realized that it was almost dinner time, explaining why he was feeling so hungry.

Jongki shook his head and he run out of his bedroom without saying anything. A few moments later he was back with a piece of bread on his hand, “Uncle, you can have this.” Jonghyun’s heart melted on his sincerity and thanked him.

“What about Jongki? Aren’t you hungry?”

“Appa isn’t home yet so there is no food.”

“Jongki-ah, if Jongki can pick something for dinner, what would it be?”

“Meat!”

“Meat? Do you like meat?”

Jongki nodded his head.

“What about we go out and have steak for dinner?”

“What about appa?”

“We can buy one for him too. Let’s call Jinki appa.” Jonghyun fished out his phone but stopped in the middle way as he remembered that he didn’t have Jinki’s number. “Do you remember Jinki’s number?”

“Hmm” Jonghyun high fived the child before dialing the number Jongki told him.

“Hyung, it’s me, Jonghyun.”

“Jonghyun?”

“Yeah, Jonghyun. By the way, I’m going to take Jongki out for dinner. I’m hungry but there is no food in your house.”

“Oh…”

“When will you be home?”

“Well, I’m about to go home to cook for him but if you’re taking him out then I suppose I can continue my work.”

“Okay then, I’ll get something for you too.”

“No, there is no need –“

“See you later, hyung.” Jonghyun cut him off and hung up. “Let’s get you dressed up, Jongki-ah.”

Jonghyun walked to the cupboard and began looking for warm clothes for Jongki. However, the little boy wanted to wear his Mickey Mouse T-shirt which Jonghyun granted in return the child had to also put on a jacket.

Jongki was very excited for another ride with Jonghyun. Just like when they were heading home from hospital, Jongki also asked so many questions this time. Jonghyun used this chance to get something out of the boy.

“Jongki-ah, Uncle heard you have another father.”

“You mean Papa?”

“Yes, Jongki’s Papa. Who is he? Uncle would like to meet him.”

“Papa is working somewhere so far away. You can’t meet Papa, Uncle.”

“Oh… when will he come home?”

“I don’t know.”

“Ah, that’s so bad. When did the last time you meet him, Jongki?”

“Jongki never see Papa.”

“What? What do you mean you never see him?”

“Appa said Papa went somewhere far when Jongki was inside Appa’s tummy. I want to hide inside Appa’s tummy again but Appa said I can’t.”

Jonghyun was grateful that Jongki was so innocence that sometimes it made him smiles despite the situation he was in. “Of course you can’t go inside him tummy again, Jongki-ah. You’re too big and heavy now.”

Jongki pouted when his uncle mentioned about it.

“How is your Papa? Is he handsome? Did Appa ever show you his picture?”

Jongki shook his head.

“You didn’t know too? What do you know about him then, Jongki-ah?”

“Appa always says Papa is working so far away from here and Papa loves me so much. Uncle, am I a good boy?”

Jonghyun startled with the sudden question. “Yes, Jongki is a very good boy.”

“I asked Appa if I can meet Papa if I become a good boy and Appa said yes. Papa must be coming home soon, right, Uncle?”

Jonghyun could only smile. He felt bad for the child. He wanted to be mad at his hyung for constantly feeding him with lies. But there must be something serious between Jinki and this man that he never met with Jinki and Jongki again. Jonghyun knew Jongki was far too young to understand such thing, but this wasn’t a good choice too. How long Jinki would keep it this way? Jonghyun wondered.

Jonghyun learned that Jongki didn’t get the chance to eat meat that often. Jinki’s financial life wasn’t that good, he concluded. He remembered the debt Jinki had for giving birth to Jongki. His hyung was having a really hard life. On their way back to Jinki’s home, Jonghyun called the older, just checking when he would be home. Jonghyun was disappointed that he wouldn’t be home until 10.

The two waited for Jinki at Jongki’s bedroom, having a car race battle. When they heard the sound of door clicking, Jongki shouted for his Appa and run into him. Jonghyun cleaned up their mess before joined them in the living room.

“Did your head hurt?” Jongki shook his head.

“Did you take your medicine?” Jongki nodded.

“Did you take a nap?” Jongki was silent and Jinki knew it mean no. “Why?”

“I wait for Uncle Jonghyun to come. How if Uncle Jonghyun comes when I sleep? Uncle would be bored and go home.” Jongki blabbed. Jinki looked into Jonghyun coming out from Jongki’s room. “Alright then, but tomorrow you have to take a nap, okay? The doctors want you to rest, Jongki-ah.” Jongki nodded.

“Appa, Uncle Jonghyun brings me present today.”

“Really?” Jinki turned to look at Jonghyun who was now sitting next to him as if he was confirming it to Jonghyun instead of his child.

“I just bring him the stuff I used to play with when I was a child.” Jonghyun answered.

“Thanks.” Jinki smiled. “Have you said thank you to Uncle Jonghyun?” Jongki nodded again before yawning. “You’re sleepy. Let’s get you sleep.”

“Jongki-ah, do you want to sleep with Uncle? Appa can have the meal we bought for him.” Jonghyun offered and Jongki agreed right away. “Jongki picked it himself. Enjoy your meal, hyung.” Jonghyun said before heading to the bedroom.

Jinki could picture out in his head how happy Jongki must be when he had dinner with Jonghyun. Jongki loved meat so much. It was unfortunate for him to not able to witness it. Just when he thought he would ask the younger about it, he heard footsteps coming to his direction.

“Jongki loves meat so much.” Jinki said, knowing who would be there.

“Yeah, he said so. Such a cute boy.”

Jinki smiled at the compliment.

“I’m not giving up on his other father, you know. And it’s not a good idea to feed him with lies that his father is working somewhere far. Someday he would find out and I wonder what you would do then. I’m more concerned on how he would react.”

Jinki smiled again. “I appreciate your concern but that’s none of your business, Jonghyun. Thank you for the meal and for everything you have done for Jongki today. But it’s late, and you have to work tomorrow. I’m not being rude here, just… it’s late. You can come tomorrow. As long as Jongki wants you, then you’re welcomed here.”

See you on the next chapter :D
