Focused on the game

The Uptown Romance

"What the heck are you doing here?" Jiyeon snarled at Jaebum. "Yah! Yah! Don't act like you were here first." Jaebum scooted his head to the side. Turning his look away from Jiyeon. Jiyeon just huffed and just stared at the field. "How unlucky" she murmured.

Suddenly, the team captain appeared before them. "Okay! The Event is about to start! First game; Relay race!" The team captain approached the row that Jaebum and Jiyeon were in, "You, you, you and you... " He pointed at Jaebum, Jiyeon and two other teammates who sat by their row, "You'll represent our team for the relay race." Jaebum nodded, "Okie dokie!". "Wait, what???" Jiyeon exclaimed in confusion. "This is the relay race section" Jaebum told Jiyeon, pointing at the sign just next to their row, "If you wanna play relay and represent this team, you sit here." He added. "How can I not see that...?" Jiyeon let out a sigh of annoyance. "Better not let our team down, uptown yeoja" Jaebum said mockingly and emphasizing the words 'uptown yeoja'. Jiyeon gritted her teeth and quickly followed behind Jaebum as he walked with the other teammates.

"Omg! Look!" Suzy shook Nana and Taemin by the hands and pointed at Jaebum and Jiyeon who were currently on the field with their teammates. "I know!" Nana exclaimed, "Can Jiyeon even do this sport?" Nana added with a very worried voice. "I don't think so!" Suzy and Nana started freaking out as they tensely watched Jiyeon on the field who appears to be confused about what's happening.

Jiyeon was so lost that she didn't know what to do. The only person she knew out of everyone who surrounded her was Jaebum. So she had no other choice but to ask for his help and to hopefully guide her, "Yah! Downtown Namja!" Jiyeon called out to Jaebum. Jaebum pursed his lips, "My name is Jaebum! Stop calling me 'downtown namja'!" Jiyeon rolled her eyes and tried to calm herself down from her temper she would usually get around Jaebum.
Jaebum was gonna run to his position, but as he was about to take a step forward Jiyeon quickly grabbed onto his shirt. Jaebum looked back at her and was staggered about the sudden action Jiyeon did. "What am I supposed to do now?" Jiyeon winced and grumpily looked away waiting for Jaebum to tell her the rules of the game. "Yah, have you played any athletics or sports before?" Jiyeon shook her head in embarrassment. Jaebum let out a sigh of annoyance, and decided to help her out. Afterall, they're both teammates, therefore they should help each other in order to get good results for the whole team. After moments of explaining everything to Jiyeon, Jaebum ran to his position and they waited for the starting signal.

Jiyeon waited nervously. She was so nervous that you can clearly see it on her face. Jaebum looked back at her and believe it or not, he became worried about her. He knew that Jiyeon was very weak, especially when it comes to physical activities such as a big sports game event. Jiyeon then looked at Jaebum from a distance. They both looked at each other. Jaebum gave that serious-soft expression telling her that she can do it. Just looking through those gentle eyes of burning charisma, Jiyeon could feel encouragement through Jaebum's eyes.
They finally heard the gunshot which was a signal of 'GO'. The game of relay racing finally started, and things became serious. Jiyeon waited nervously for her teammate to pass her the baton. She took a glimpse of Jaebum who had already looked away. Jiyeon felt lost by the time Jaebum looked away. But when Jaebum looked back at her again with those encouraging eyes, it felt like she was depending on those encouragement that Jaebum had in his stare and it helped her feel more calm than ever. Jaebum furrowed his eyebrows and used his eyes to point behind her signaling her to look back and that's when Jiyeon looked back and saw her teammate coming. She finally took hold of the baton and ran as fast as she could to Jaebum. Jiyeon did her best to run faster, but unfortunately, she was behind the others. As soon as she handed the baton over to Jaebum, Jaebum grabbed it and sprinted as if his life depends on it.

Jiyeon looked at him trying his best to run just for the victory of their team in the first game. She couldn't help but see herself as a burden to the team and suddenly she clicked, "I'm not gonna let my team down"

Minutes later,
"Black; 3rd place. Blue; 2nd place. And our winner for the Relay Race is Red!"
Red team came first and the white team came last.

The team captain told the teams who had already finished the relay race to take their rest.
Jaebum slumped on his seat and panted. Jiyeon slowly walked to her seat next to Jaebum and calmly but sheepishly sat down next to Jaebum. "When was the last time you had a serious sprint?" Jaebum asked between his heavy breathing. Jiyeon thought for a while and realized it has been a long time since she ran, "Uhm...8 years ago, I guess?" She said, rather embarrassed.

Jaebum shook his head, "No wonder you were so bad at it earlier." Jiyeon pouted and just kept quiet because she knew for a fact that she really dragged the team down.
Jaebum took a quick glimpse at Jiyeon fearing if she would notice him looking at her, then he quickly look forward trying to look cold as he normally is, "Why are you sticking with me? Don't you have any other people to hang with on this team?"
Jiyeon wrinkled her chin and looked down at her shoes, "No! I can't find them." she murmured. Jaebum just snickered which made Jiyeon wince, "Yah! Don't laugh" Jaebum looked at Jiyeon and simpered, "Don't sit with me."

Jaebum decided that he wanted to play the next game for his team. So he stood up and went to the badminton section. Jiyeon hurriedly followed Jaebum. Jaebum felt her presence behind him and so he spun around and as expected, Jiyeon was there, following him. Jiyeon slowly looked up at him and let out an awkward smile. Jaebum narrowed his eyes at Jiyeon and asked, "Why are you following me again?" Jiyeon looked down at her feet while swinging her body, "I have nowhere to go" "Do you wanna play badminton??" Jaebum asked raising his voice a little in surprise. "Uhm...yeah!" Jiyeon awkwardly nodded. Jaebum just rolled his eyes and walked to the badminton section while Jiyeon followed him.
Jaebum and Jiyeon sat together and waited for their turn.

Finally, the badminton game is starting. Jaebum and Jiyeon were teams and throughout the game, they've gotten serious and cared less about each other but to win the sports game for their team. After badminton, Jiyeon still followed Jaebum to different sections to play different other sports. She follwed him around and Jaebum didn't mind her following him anymore.

"It's the final game. You ready?" Jaebum calmly asked Jiyeon. Jiyeon nodded nervously. Jaebum could see the nervousness and weariness on her facial expression. He felt that Jiyeon shouldn't play because she doesn't look like she has enough energy left. Jaebum tried to look serious but he couldn't help but take glimpses of Jiyeon, and to his notice, Jiyeon seemed to be out of energy. He hesitated for a while but knew that Jiyeon doesn't look right and so he had to take action, "You don't really have to do this if you feel like you can't." Jiyeon just shook her head weakly and pointed at the badminton section up at the white team's place, "There's no one else but us who will be representing this team" Jaebum looked up at where she pointed and just like she said, there was absolutely nobody who was interested to play badminton. But he still insisted her to stop. Jiyeon being so stubborn still didn't want to listen to Jaebum and the next thing they both knew. The whistle filled the area and the game started.

Jaebum and Jiyeon gave their best but Jaebum himself gave his all.
After 15 minutes, still in the middle of the game, Jaebum sensed something wrong with Jiyeon. She was a few feet away from him and she looks so worn out. Jaebum kept on looking at her, he didn't care much about the game any longer. And before anyone knew it, Jaebum ran to Jiyeon and caught her in his arms.

Everything and everyone froze for a second and that's when the people starts to panic.

Jaebum carried her - bridal style. And ran off to a teacher who's in front of his car waving at him calling for him to bring Jiyeon to the car.
He quickly placed Jiyeon in the passenger's seat and he entered the car as well. And so the car sped off to the hospital.

Jaebum gently placed Jiyeon's head comfortably on his shoulders.
Her face was so up close that he could see the details of her face. Her eyelashes, her well trimmed eyebrows, the perfect shape of her nose bridge, her lips, her flawlessly smooth skin and how she still looked beautiful with a few strands of her hair covering half of her face.
For the first time, Jaebum felt so captivated by the beauty who lies her head on his shoulder. The girl whom he used to argue with most of the time. He gently brushed the strands off her face and hung it behind her ear and was compelled by how beautiful she really is.

"She's beautiful, isn't she?" The teacher teased. Jaebum was surprised by the sudden voice in the quiet atmosphere. "Uhh...I was...I was just- I just-..." Jaebum couldn't find an excuse to cover up for him. He didn't want the teacher to think he was being fascinated by Jiyeon but he just can't find an excuse so instead, he let out a sigh of defeat. The teacher smiled as he look at them through the rearview mirror of his car. "She is beautiful but not very interested in studying." the teacher laughed. Jaebum chuckled softly. He knew it and can see it. "But she's a really kind girl" The teacher said. Jaebum looked at the teacher confusingly, he isn't convinced hearing that Jiyeon is kind. The teacher focused on the road and he added, "I know it's hard to believe after all she had done, but I've seen the kindness she did. She has a soft side."
After hearing this, Jaebum's perspectives towards Jiyeon slowly changed. He took a glimpse of Jiyeon and imagined how it would be like to deal with that soft side of her.

She looks more beautiful that way.
