12 years later.........

“Ah, you came!” said Niel, smiling.

“Minsooo, you made it! Good to see you again – it’s been a while,” Chanhee said.

“Indeed it has,” replied Minsoo, taking the seat beside Niel. “Sorry for making you wait. I was held up at a meeting.”

“We didn’t wait long,” Niel assured him.

“It gave us time to pick our food first anyway. Here. Your turn.” Niel pushed a menu towards him. “You might want to try #10. It’s really good. I told Chanhee, but he doesn’t like that sort of thing.”

The beeping of Chanhee’s phone in his bag interrupted them. Seeing the caller ID, he frowned slightly.

“What does he want now?” Chanhee muttered, before answering it.

“Yes? I’m at lunch…

No, you cannot come. I’m with my friend and – argh!”

Chanhee stood up and said to Niel and Minsoo, “Excuse me for a bit” (louder voice) “an idiot needs to be sorted out.” He walked out of the restaurant to continue his conversation.

The other two watched him go, but said nothing. Minsoo merely continued reading the menu.

“Decided what to eat yet, Minsoo?” asked Niel, after a few moments.

“Not quite. What are you having?”

“I think I’m going to try #8. Haven’t been here before, but Chanhee says #4 and #2 are good too.”

“I see.”

Niel couldn’t help watching him as he studied the menu. He hadn’t really changed much since High School, he thought. Still serious, but a less antisocial now. Taller than he had been in school, which was rather frightening in a way, when one thought about it.

“Perhaps I shall have #6,” he said eventually.

“Okay. Should we call the waitress over so we can place our orders?”

“What about Chanhee?”

“Oh, that’s okay. I know what he wants,” said Niel. “In any case, he’s coming back.” Niel pointed to the door, through which walked an exasperated-looking Chanhee.

Chanhee sat down and slumped in his chair before straightening himself. “Sorry. Looks like we’re going to have another person here. My JERK childhood friend from America insisted on coming. I told him ‘no’ and hung up, but knowing him, he’ll come anyway.”  

“Who is it?” asked Niel, trying to recall which of Chanhee’s "JERK friends” this could be.

Chanhee shot him a look and muttered, “Don’t ask.”

After placing their orders, Niel excused himself to go to the washroom. Minsoo found his eyes involuntarily following his graceful, polite and mannered stride. He questioned why both Niel and Chanhee became best of friend though they both have different personalities. He knew that Niel was often far from self-confident. Niel had been like that for as long as he’d known him - looking more in control than he really felt but Chanhee seems the opposite with a diva confidence in him, and it reminds him of someone.

A blonde in a cool black jacket wearing a shades entered the restaurant. Minsoo eyebrows rose slightly. Chanhee saw him look up and turned. He groaned.

“I knew it. He would come. One day I’ll kill him or... Or… Argh. Minsoo, I apologise in advance.”

“Insignificant muttering does not you, Chanhee.”

“Shut up! Who said you could come?”

“A cool and handsome like me does not need anyone’s permission for this.”

Chanhee’s eyes flashed, but before he could retort, Byunghun suddenly noticed the person opposite him.

“CAP?”

“LJOE??” He nodded slightly, also surprised at seeing Lee Byunghun, but kept his face impassive.

“Why are you here with him?” demanded Byunghun of Chanhee.

“You know each other?” Chanhee asked Minsoo.

“Sort of.” He looked at Byunghun. “But it’s been a long time since we met.”

Byunghun kept his eyes on Chanhee and repeated his question, “Why are you here with him?”

“Can I not be?” Chanhee said. He had been about to tell Byunghun that Minsoo was here at Niel’s invitation, but Byunghun’s manner of questioning him turned up all his mood. Who was he to question him like that anyway? “It’s not a crime to be out with a guy.”

Byunghun fixed his glare on him for a moment before replacing it with his usual smirk. “No indeed,” he said, sliding into the seat beside Chanhee. “It certainly isn’t.”

He folded his arms and threw a cool glare at Minsoo, who merely blinked and said nothing.

“You’re being rude, you know?!,” said Chanhee to Byunghun.

“Oh? Did I interrupt something?”  

Minsoo shifted in his chair. When Byunghun came he immediately feel a strong vibe of magnetic attraction between the two, and he suddenly feel being misunderstood on Byunghun side. What was Chanhee thinking? He suddenly wished Niel would hurry up and come back.  Byunghun was glaring daggers at both of them now, and Chanhee seemed intent on letting him continue to misunderstand as long as possible. He suspected Chanhee was taking revenge on Byunghun for his way of barging into his lunch date with friends.

“If you must invite yourself like this, you could at least be nice!”

“You –”

“Back,” said Niel, coming to the table. Minsoo rose to allow him to reach his seat more easily. Byunghun stared at Niel and to Minsoo, startled.

“Niel, this is my JERK childhood friend from America, Lee Byunghun or most probably famous as the popular rapper-composer Ljoe. Byunghun, my best friend from university and my current business partner, Ahn Daniel,” said Chanhee, a little smugly. “Minsoo here is his old friend and classmate. He just opened an office nearby, so we invited him for lunch.”

Minsoo supposed that if Byunghun could feel embarrassed, now was a point when he might be embarrassed indeed.
