Kai POV:

I watch as Lei bounds down the stairs. I blow air out of my mouth and close my book.

I walk around the room and see Lei’s picture wall. I touch a picture of her face. I close my eyes.

BRINGG! Ugh. I take out my cell phone and look at the caller ID. It’s Kris.

“Hello?”

“Hey, man! What’s up?” Kris screams into the phone. I can barely hear him. He must be at a club or something. I can hear music from the background.

“Umm, nothing much.” I mumble. Really, nothing much.

“Cool, man. Where are you?”

“At Lei’s house.” I reply, staring at her picture.

Silence. “Uh, OK.” Kris mutters, almost soft enough that I can’t hear what he’s say
