Chapter Five

The Nine Month Ride

Saturday. The day Taeyeon was expecting came fast and slow at the same time. How to explain that? It isn’t easy. Taeyeon has just been wanting to get to Saturday since the moment Tiffany agreed to hang out with her and when it finally came, she got so nervous she wished it wasn’t Saturday yet.

She looked at the ceiling above while laying on her bed wondering why she was feeling like this. It almost felt like a date, she chuckled. “I really want us to be good friends, ha” she said to herself.

Taeyeon looked at the time on her phone, it was 9 am. She got up and went to the kitchen, looking for breakfast.

As expected, Tiffany wasn’t home. Yesterday she told Taeyeon she needed to do some things at work and she was coming back at 10 am. She offered to pick up Tiffany but she said it wasn’t necessary so she rejected her offer. To be honest… she felt a little glad about it. No matter what, Taeyeon still thinks of herself as an awkward person. Taeyeon sometimes envied people with great social skills because she felt she lacked them. She was happy with the few friends she had but social skills are really helpful anyway. While opening the fridge she suddenly remembered her first date, one really awkward date, ugh, she grimaced at the memory. “So, should I kiss you?” is the worst thing you should ask your date when you are at the movies (even if the movie is a romantic one). Taeyeon felt hotness on her cheeks and just laughed. It happened a long time ago but it proves how awkward Taeyeon can be sometimes. So yep, she wanted to spend most of her day with Tiffany but a part of her didn’t.

She chose something simple for breakfast, fried eggs with bread. She didn’t want to eat that much since she was planning to take Tiffany to the amusement park. She was kinda scared of puking all over the place if she did. Taeyeon couldn’t help but laugh at her silly thoughts. While eating, her mind traveled to the past when she and her family went together for the first time to the amusement park. She was 6. Jiwoong ate too much at the place and after one game he puked in front of everyone.

Ugh… I just puked… dad mom! oh god I just want to go home”

“Hahaha! You’re so disgusting”

“What, Taeyeon? Are you laughing? You little brat ugh, my stomach”

“Hahaha!”

“Oh, seriously I was such an evil little girl”, Taeyeon said out loud as she laughed remembering that little conversation. As she grew up she understood that something like that is an embarrassing experience, but it still was one of those stories their family told at dinner. It was a happy memory, in some way.

Taeyeon sighed. She stared at her unfinished breakfast wondering if there will be a time when thinking about her brother wouldn’t hurt this much. A happy memory like that one seemed to be a little bittersweet today.

“So… do you like her?”

“What?”

“Taeyeon, I mean”

Tiffany was at Red Lips, helping Jessica with the new waitress, Yuri. Jessica contacted this new girl in order to help to ease Tiffany’s work, but Yuri couldn’t work without Tiffany’s guidance so that’s why she came today. Tiffany was really engrossed with the task of showing Yuri around and telling her where everything was but when she heard that question, she stopped to look at Jessica. She was confused.

“Why are you asking that?”

“Eh? You seemed to be excited about hanging out with her, so I guessed you were getting along?”

Oh.

“Ah yes yes”

Jessica smiled a typical Jessica sly smile at her. Tiffany tried to ignore it and went to Yuri but she was surprised when she noticed that Yuri seemed to be trying to hide her smile. Tiffany felt a little angry.

“So, Tiff… is Taeyeon attractive?” Jessica suddenly asked her and Tiffany felt fully angry now.

“What are you even asking, Jessica? She is the sister of the deceased father of my baby, god”

Tiffany stared at Jessica with a frown. She didn’t even care if Yuri was there. Tiffany saw that Yuri lowered her head, probably embarrassed about finding funny what Jessica said before. Tiffany didn’t blame her anyway, she didn’t know anything. She felt a little bad that she had to hear that.

Jessica got closer to her, “Sorry Tiffany… I’m ing stupid. I didn’t mean to offend you or Taeyeon or your baby, or Jiwoong. I’m really really sorry”

Tiffany stared at Jessica’s apologetic expression. She knew Jessica was only joking, she knew she was only trying to make things lighter with her joke. She knew Jessica never meant to be offensive but Tiffany disliked what her joke was implying. She couldn’t even think of liking someone at this moment let alone feeling attracted to Taeyeon. The idea made her feel weird.

She sighed.

“It’s fine, Jessi… just don’t ask weird stuff, ok?” Tiffany smiled at her best friend and Jessica smiled at her too.

“Alright Tiff… I’ll let you work, tell me when you are about to leave” Jessica touched her hand and Tiffany could feel she still felt bad so she pat Jessica’s as she said with a smile on her face “I’ll let you know, boss!”. Jessica smiled again, nodded and walked to her office.

Tiffany turned around and saw Yuri looking all awkward beside one table at the corner, she wanted to laugh.

“Hey Yuri, what are you doing there? Come here girl! We still have work to do and we gotta do it fast. I need to go!” Tiffany showed a playful glare to make her feel at ease. Yuri finally smiled for real and got closer.

Tiffany saw the time at the clock hanging on the wall behind Yuri. She really needed to go, it was almost 10 am!

Taeyeon was already dressed. She was trying to watch something on tv as she waited for Tiffany to come back home but it seemed like everything on tv at that time was awful. She grabbed her phone and started playing candy crush, but she got bored fast. She was stuck at level 189 for two months already. She saw the time and it was 10:15 am. Where was Tiffany?

Taeyeon laid on her couch and stared at the ceiling. She closed her eyes. She could take a short nap. She would hear the door anyway. Taeyeon was about to sleep for a bit when her phone started to vibrate. She opened her eyes a little struck by the sudden movement. She grabbed her phone and saw the name on her screen. Tiffany.

“Hello?” Taeyeon said when she picked the call.

“Taeyeon! Sorry!” When Taeyeon heard that she felt really scared. Was Tiffany going to cancel her? Maybe she needed to stay at work, maybe-

“Sorry, the work took a while, can you pick me up?”

Taeyeon released a relieved sigh.

“Taeyeon?”

“Oh yes, its fine I can pick you up. Can you message me the address?"

“I’ll do it. Thank you!”

Taeyeon smiled as she said bye. She stood up from the couch, grabbed her keys, her purse and left her place with an excited heart. Even if she knew she would probably do something awkward at some point, she was hoping this day would be a great day.

“God, Taeyeon is already coming I need to change. Jessica can I borrow one of your shirts? This one I’m wearing got messed up when I was cleaning with Yuri”

Tiffany went to Jessica’s office closet and was not impressed at seeing many clothes there even if it was just Jessica’s work place. The blonde loves clothes with passion.

“Why do you even ask if you’re already looking for a shirt” Jessica said as she sat on the chair in front of her desk. She watched Tiffany with an amused expression.

“Shup up, Jessi” Jessica smiled.

“How long will Taeyeon take?” Jessica asked while grabbing one fashion magazine on the desk.

“It’s early so I guess she will be here in 30 minutes” Tiffany said as she started to take off her shirt. She already found the one she liked the most in Jessica’s closet.

“Ah you need to hurry, Tiff” Jessica said as she scanned the magazines pages.

Tiffany saw herself in the mirror. She looked nice but she needed the expert’s opinion. She turned to Jessica. “So?”

Jessica looked up and stared at her. Tiffany was impatiently waiting. “Jessica?”

“You look really good Tiff”

Tiffany smiled at that. “Uff I finished changing in time. It’s already embarrassing that I got to call her when I told her I’ll be home at 10 am” she sat on the chair in front of Jessica.

“You’re the pregnant lady, Tiff. I’m sure Taeyeon offered to pick you up anyway”

“Yeah she did but come on, Jessi, its not like I have a big belly. I only have a month.”

Jessica laughed and continued reading her magazine “Come on, don’t overthink trivial things”

“I’m nervous” Tiffany suddenly said.

“You don’t say” Jessica said and Tiffany frowned with confusion.

“I mean… I don’t really want to talk about what I had with Jiwoong” Tiffany said with a worried tone.

Jessica looked up and left the magazine on the desk.

"Why not?” The blonde asked.

Tiffany was a little surprised at her friend’s question, “Dating him was really hard, you know it” she dropped her gaze.

Jessica stared at Tiffany and sighed.

“From what I got from you, Taeyeon seems to be an understanding person. Maybe it would make you grow closer”

Tiffany thought about it. Actually, she has been thinking about it a lot over the past days. When they shared quiet meals. When they talked a bit after Tiffany came home from work. When Taeyeon suddenly stopped walking, spacing out for a while. She thought of the moment when Taeyeon would ask her details about her relationship with Jiwoong and she feared that these  might disappoint or even hurt Taeyeon. Tiffany and Jiwoong were lonely souls. They were so similar in a way that made them open up to each other really fast. They both accepted the fact that they were an emotional disaster, but they both wanted to fight even after knowing their limitations. Tiffany thought at the beginning that a relationship with him would make them beat life's obstacles but it didn’t happen that way. Her relationship with Jiwoong made her suffer. Seeing Jiwoong have this inner fight with alcoholism was something that made Tiffany restless. Knowing his family only through pictures was something that made her feel sad. Their relationship was sinking before her eyes. They have had happy moments, and when they hugged each other to sleep Tiffany felt tomorrow would be a better day but her hopes got crushed by reality hitting her on the face.

Taeyeon doesn’t need to hear this. Even if it was the truth.

I don’t really want to talk about it” Tiffany finished that conversation. It made her head hurt.

Someone knocked the door and Jessica stood up to open it. It was Yuri, she mentioned there was a short girl waiting outside. Yuri guessed it was Taeyeon so she asked her to come inside. Tiffany saw Jessica smiling. Jessica is so obviously curious about Taeyeon.

“Thanks Yuri. We’re coming” The blonde said.

“We’re coming” Tiffany repeated Jessica’s words as she stared at her with one eyebrow up

Jessica laughed, “Come on, she is waiting for you”.

When Tiffany left the office with Jessica she saw Taeyeon looking lost in the same place an awkward Yuri stood earlier. She smiled at the sight. Taeyeon was indeed cute, and she didn’t belong to a place like Red Lips. Only men and women who wanted to drink like there’s no tomorrow came here. That was one of the reasons why Tiffany didn’t want her to come, but if she wants them to be real friends this is a part of her life that Taeyeon should know.

“Taeyeon, hey!” Tiffany said catching Taeyeon’s attention.

“Oh, hi, Tiffany! umm are you ready?"

Tiffany noticed how Taeyeon glanced at her best friend. It was time for introductions.

“Yes! But first let me introduce you to my boss and best friend, Jessica”

Tiffany saw them bow towards each other and shake hands. She just watched them and it felt… strange. She saw them smile towards each other, sharing a light short talk and it just felt strange. Two important parts in her life were ‘colliding’ in a nice, simple way. Jessica, the person she trusts the most and Taeyeon, the person who also seems to believe in her and is doing a lot to help her, to connect with her. To be honest, Tiffany was scared, scared of Taeyeon and Jessica disliking each other. But this fear was slowly going away with every smile both of them gave to each other, with Jessica showing Taeyeon around and being introduced to Yuri, with Taeyeon asking Tiffany ‘Hey why are you standing there?’ and Jessica saying ‘She is probably spacing out haha’. Strange, but it made Tiffany smile in content.

The car ride between Taeyeon and Tiffany was spent in silence, they talked for a bit and after a while the talk died down. It felt awkward for her at first, but as minutes went by she got used to it.

Taeyeon was thinking of Red Lips. The place where Jiwoong and Tiffany met and probably fell in love. Jiwoong used to go to the bar Sunny worked at but he stopped because he had more reasons to go to a different bar. It wasn’t only drinking. Tiffany was a good reason, she thought.

From time to time, she felt eyes watching her as she drove. She looked sideways and saw Tiffany looking at the streets passing by outside the passenger’s window. It must have been her imagination. She couldn’t help but to wonder what was Tiffany thinking about, she looked so pensive. Car rides were perfect moments for reflection when there was silence. Taeyeon stared ahead, driving in a curve, but she was curious. So when the road seemed safe enough, she looked sideways at Tiffany again. It seemed like Tiffany noticed and looked at her. When they looked at each other both seemed surprised. Taeyeon turned her eyes to the road again smiling shyly, but she stared at Tiffany once again and Tiffany seemed to have smiled shyly too. Taeyeon laughed and then she heard laughter besides her. Tiffany was laughing too. They fully stared at each other for a few seconds, with smiles in their faces. Taeyeon's eyes went back to the road and she kept the smile until they got to their destination.

“We’re here!” Taeyeon said moments before they got inside the amusement park. It was full of families, couples, kids running around, people’s screams. Taeyeon turned around and saw Tiffany looking everywhere, she called her but it seemed like Tiffany didn’t hear her. Taeyeon smiled.

She shook Tiffany’s shoulder gaining her attention “Hey haha do you like this place?

“Yes!” Tiffany answered fast “I haven’t been to an amusement park since I was 15!” Taeyeon was really glad with Tiffany’s excitem-

“What?! That was a long time ago!” Taeyeon suddenly said, surprised after realizing what Tiffany said.

She gained a light punch on her arm from the girl in front of her.

“Hey, you are older than me!” Tiffany joked.

“I’m just a few months older, Tiffany!” Taeyeon playfully glared at her.

They stayed quiet for some seconds before Tiffany said, “You can call me Fany, everyone close to me calls me that"

Everyone close to me calls me that

Taeyeon spaced out for a moment, “Oh- Oh ok, you can call me Tae or Taengoo, or Taeyeon, whatever you prefer”

Tiffany smiled.

“Ok then, Tae” They both smiled at each other.

“All right! Let’s go, I want to try that” Tiffany said as she grabbed Taeyeon’s arm.

Taeyeon turned around to see what game Tiffany wanted to try and saw a really big thing, people in big boxes going in circles screaming like they were being killed. Taeyeon opened her eyes wide, suddenly scared of playing that game (can’t it even be called a game?).

She turned to Tiffany with an awkward laugh, “Ha…ha that one?”

Tiffany laughed showing an eyesmile. Not only her lips were smiling, her eyes too. It was such a pretty sight. It made Taeyeon forget the big game for a while. She was smiling too.

Tiffany stopped “God, that was funny, let’s go Taeyeon don’t be scared!” Taeyeo dropped her smile.

Tiffany dragged her to the game and it was thanks to the energy coming from Tiffany that she thought she could just deal with this silly sudden fear.

--

Taeyeon screamed like crazy game after game, but the first one was indeed the worst. While she shouted things like “Please stoooooop oh goooood!” Tiffany was like “woooohoo!” “Oh my god you make me laugh, Tae!” Taeyeon got used the games after a while but she still closed her eyes, only feeling the breeze. She didn’t dare to watch the sight and envied Tiffany’s ability of not being afraid of these games.
They were playing one last game before going to lunch. Taeyeon hugged herself while furrowing her eyebrows.

“Taeyeon, come on open your eyes!” Tiffany shouted for Taeyeon to hear.

“I’m fine!” Taeyeon said.

Taeyeon felt a hug and something like strawberries perfume.

“Come on, don’t be scared, I’m here!”

Taeyeon felt the breeze and the hug and the perfume. She was indeed not afraid with these things combined. She slowly opened one eye, then the other. Looking at sky as the game went fast in circles Taeyeon felt the adrenaline she had in the first games when she screamed her heart out. But it was in a better way. She turned to Tiffany who was smiling and Taeyeon smiled too. She laughed as she turned to watch the sight again.

“Doesn’t it feel great?!” Tiffany asked her but Taeyeon was busy watching everything, the small people on the ground, the other games on the horizon and more.

Taeyeon felt her hands being grabbed so she turned to Tiffany, curious about her actions. Tiffany lifted her arms while grabbing Taeyeon’s hands, lifting her arms as well.

“Scream with me!” Tiffany said “Come on!”

Taeyeon smiled in content and followed her instructions, she looked at the sky and she shouted “Yeaaaaaah!” both laughed.

Tiffany released her arms and but left her arms in the air “Wooooo! It feels great, huh?!”

Taeyeon followed Tiffany stare to the horizon and kept shouting, it was a great feeling of freedom, of being in top of the world.

“Yes it does!” She laughed.

Tiffany sat down with Taeyeon in front of her after buying fast food, hamburgers and French fries. They both semed to be really hungry, the food felt like paradise. While eating, they talked about the games. Tiffany made jokes about Taeyeon looking scared and Taeyeon pouted playfully. So cute, she thought. After talking about the games they randomly started to talk about the shows they watched as kids. Tiffany learnt that the older girl was just as nostalgic as her. Tiffany told Taeyeon she loved shows from the 90’s that she used to watch in America and when she felt nostalgic she watches cuts or full episodes on youtube. Taeyeon loved to listen from time to time to music themes from old animes or any show. Tiffany smiled at that. Tiffany learnt that Taeyeon liked dramas but couldn’t get so into them because of the romance. Tiffany told her that she was so used to amercian shows korean dramas were so difficult to watch for her. Taeyeon liked scary movies. Tiffany didn’t. Tiffany liked to party. Taeyeon didn’t. They shared stories and talked like longtime friends. Tiffany only noticed after a while that they finished eating probably an hour ago, both of them were engrossed in their conversation that they didn't notice the time.

There were some seconds of silence before Taeyeon started to talk.

“Fany… can I ask you something?”

Tiffany curiously stared at her, “Tell me”

It seemed like Taeyeon went back to her cautious self. Tiffany felt it was a question about Jiwoong.

Silence. It felt awkward. Tiffany was scared of one question but she preferred to hear it instead of ruining the nice atmosphere they had before.

“You can ask anything, Tae” She smiled at her.

“Were you and Jiwoong… happy?” Taeyeon finally asked.

“For what I got from you, Taeyeon seems to be an understanding person.”

Tiffany eyes moved from Taeyeon to anywhere else as Jessica’s words repeated on her head.

Maybe it would make you grow closer”

Tiffany's eyes went back to Taeyeon’s expectant ones. They stared at each other for some seconds. Jessica’s words running through her head. Tiffany closed her eyes, breathed deep then opened them again.

She couldn’t damage this day. She just couldn’t.

“I… We were, most of the time”

Taeyeon dropped her gaze. It seemed like she was thinking deeply. Her eyes locked to her leftovers on the table but obviously not looking at them. What was she thinking? Tiffany wondered. Taeyeon lifted her gaze again and stared at Tiffany.

Taeyeon looked at her with those sincere eyes that Tiffany really liked. She didn’t lie to Taeyeon, Tiffany thought. She thought of the happy moments and answered. She wasn’t happy most of the time but she couldn’t deny she laughed and had great moments with him.
Taeyeon touched her hand with her thumb. The details weren’t necessary today. She didn’t want to ruin this day.

“It’s ok” Tiffany assured her.

***

The day couldn’t be over without going to the haunted house on the place. Tiffany didn’t want to go but Taeyeon insisted. She said “I played every game with my heart about to jump from my chest so you gotta do this for me”. Tiffany tried to reason with her telling her that she liked the game at the end but she has tried many times to like scary thing with ghosts and stuff and she just couldn’t. But Taeyeon dragged her just like she did when they played the first game and she couldn’t demand more. She sighed as she followed her.
When they got close to the haunted house they saw two lines and they didn’t know where to stand. Tiffany saw an employee around and told Taeyeon to better ask him.

Taeyeon was the one to speak “Hi, can you tell me-“

“Oh hi, welcome!” The employee suddenly spoke “Are you guys a couple?”

Tiffany was taken aback by the abrupt question and she was sure Taeyeon felt the same.

“Wh- what, no” Taeyeon answered.

“Oh, I mean, we don’t discriminate here. If you are couple you can go in the couples line, its fine!” The guy said with a smile.

Tiffany furrowed in confusion and felt hotness on the cheeks.

Taeyeon awkwardly said “That’s great but we uh- aren’t a couple”

The guy changed his expression, realizing his mistake “Oh! Oh I see, sorry ladies. I confused you as a couple!” He laughed and Tiffany wondered why the guy would think that. He continued “You go in the line in the middle; the one on the left side is the entrance for couples. It’s the same thing, it’s just the entrance that has a special feature for couples that came alone without friends”.

“Ah… thank you” Taeyeon said and Tiffany stared at her. She seemed a little flushed.

The guy smiled again before leaving “Have fun!”

They stood there for a few seconds. They looked at each other and laughed shrugging away the feeling of shyness they had moments ago.

“What was that?” Tiffany asked her between laughs.

“I don’t know” Taeyeon answered after laughing.

Tiffany thought as they stood in the line waiting for their turn to get inside the house that this could count as one of those silly moments in romance stories. She has never been confused as someone’s girlfriend like this and especially not with a girl-friend. Not even with Jessica in the US. It was something she wouldn’t forget. The silly feeling of her cheeks getting red. So silly of her to feel that with Taeyeon. She chuckled. Taeyeon felt like that too but she was more of shy person than her anyway. As they got inside the house after handing to the workers the tickets they bought earlier her mind dropped the topic.

Gosh this . Tiffany thought as she watched the dark house and heard weird noises. this , what if I just run away now and leave Taeyeon, would she mind? She thought. Of course she wouldn’t do that anyway. But just thinking about running away made her feel better. She turned to Taeyeon who seemed amused at every little thing on the place. Tiffany stared straight ahead. She could do this, come on. It was just a fake haunted house, what would-

“DIEEEEEE!” A sudden noise came from the wall on the right beside Tiffany. It was a doll with a screaming sound with the voice of a child.
Tiffany jumped while screaming and hugged Taeyeon.

“I want to go!” Tiffany said as she closed her eyes on Taeyeon shoulder.

Taeyeon laughed “Is fake, Fany, don’t worry”

Tiffany opened her eyes but didn’t let go of Taeyeon. She felt better like that and Taeyeon smelled good so it helped her. They started walking again but it was probably an uncomfortable position for Taeyeon. Tiffany was hugging her right side, probably hurting her arm as she kept her head on her shoulder. There was another scream and Tiffany hugged Taeyeon tightly again.

“Hey Fany…” Taeyeon spoke softly as she moved her arms to separate Tiffany from her in order to look at her.

“If you think this could be bad for you and the baby too, let’s go. I don’t want you to stress yourself” Taeyeon said, her face close to Tiffany’s. They only separated a little.

Tiffany didn’t think scary things could do something bad to the baby inside of her. But stress might. She didn’t know. But she knows she was letting some sort of stress get to her because she didn’t dare to let go of the fact that this would scare her. She remembered Taeyeon. She didn’t open her eyes until she said so because she thought she was going to feel even more scared, but after she opened them she was filled with happiness and excitement. Maybe Tiffany was just trying to hold onto the fact that she was scared before and she would be scared now.

“Fany?” Taeyeon said.

“I want to stay, I’m being silly” Tiffany finally answered.

“Is not necessa-“ Taeyeon was interrupted by Tiffany.

“I know myself, Tae. Can I just… hug your arm or something, just in case” Tiffany laughed feeling a lot more at ease.

It seemed like Taeyeon noticed it too but she wasn’t sure.

“Come on, Taeyeon. You have to be the only coward between us”, she joked.

Taeyeon laughed “Ok then”

She smiled and joined arms with the shorter girl. Tiffany stared at the house and noticed the employees around the place, collecting ghosts on the floor or the dolls. She found it funny and Taeyeon followed her stare and laughed too. Tiffany felt really childish now, she might have been scared when she was 15, she might not like scary movies but there were more scary things in reality. This was a child’s game. Taeyeon touched her hand and grabbed it. She stared at her, smiled and looked ahead. Tiffany saw their joined hands and she felt even more at ease. Things weren’t scary with Taeyeon.

Taeyeon pointed to something happening on the other side. It was a guy getting scared at a doll just like Tiffany did before. They both laughed and after their laughs died down they started walking again. Tiffany looked sideways to Taeyeon. From her eyes to her jawline. Nose, cheeks, lips. She suddenly forgot the place, the house, the ghosts on the walls, the funny things happening around and just thought one thing. Something Jessica said.

“ So, Tiff… is Taeyeon attractive?”

Tiffany furrowed her eyebrows.

She knew the answer.
