In Between

The Secret Admirer

The 15th of August, Seoul’s National Airport.

Jinri was almost running. Krystal’s going to be here soon. Jinri told that she’s coming back today and she couldn’t stop her friend from coming to pick her up. The problem was, Jinri was never out of town. She lied to her friend about the whole trip, but there was a reason for that. Never mind that, Jinri has to come up with an excuse why she didn’t go through the gates when she meets Krystal. She has to think faster, because the gates are opening in five minutes; Jinri can saw Krystal standing far away, looking intently at the gates. Jinri cursed under her breath. How can she get in to the crowd without the latter noticing? Krystal definitely can’t know Jinri was lying.

Jinri let out a breath of relief- Krystal left the place, probably going to the bathroom. If Krystal won’t make it in time when gates open, this would be the perfect chance to get into the crowd. While Jinri was standing against the wall in front of the gates, she intensively watched the direction where her friend went. Soon the gates opened, the crowd of people coming through them was huge. Jinri looked around. Krystal still wasn’t back. Perfect opportunity. Jinri went towards the crowd, with her fake luggage rolling beside her. While there were many people around, she noticed a familiar face. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She ran out of the crowd to the said person. He was wearing sunglasses, had messy light brown hair and was dressed quite formally, but still stylish. He was tall, a bit taller than Jinri herself. She could recognize him anywhere.

“Taemin!” the person turned around with a confused look plastered across his face. Once he saw Jinri, he gave her his trait wide smile.

“Oppa for you. What are you doing here? Are you picking someone up?”

“Ah…no… I just came back from the trip for my photo shoot.” She really didn’t want to lie to him, but she couldn’t come up with smart excuse right now. “Did you go somewhere? Krystal said you didn’t respond to any of her messages.” Jinri didn’t like talking to him about her friend, but she had to ask him, she was interested herself. Taemin smiled bitterly and hung his head a bit lower, took of his sunglasses.

“There was a problem… I don’t know whether it’s a good idea for us to be friends, after all.” Jinri couldn’t help but notice his sad expression. Does Taemin like her friend? She never heard of them meeting more than those two times. Did Krystal lie to her?

“Maybe it’s better that way. You know, she gets really clingy around guys. For God’s sake, she left you around twenty messages, and you met only twice! Or maybe I didn’t hear about your other hangouts..?” Taemin gave her sudden glare. Jinri was out of breath; she never saw him angry before.

“It’s really not a nice thing to say about your friend. And I didn’t know that our relationship has to be reported to you all the time.” Taemin was still glaring; Jinri gulped.

“No, it’s just… What kind of relationship do you guys have?” Taemin shook his head and laughed dramatically. Then he got serious again, but not glaring now, to Jinri’s relief.

“There will be none from now on. But for your information, it’s not my choice either.”

“What’s going on, really?” Jinri was puzzled; she could tell right away that something stressing him too much. That should explain his behavior towards her now, right? “You act strange. It’s not the real you.” Jinri tried to put her hand on his arm, but he quickly stepped away, avoiding the contact.

“You can’t tell me it’s not me. You… both of you…no, nobody knows the real me.” Taemin hung his head low once again and let out a deep breath. To Jinri’s absolute horror, he plastered his trait wide smile and looked at her, like their intense conversation never happened. She couldn’t think clearly at his act. He was a real mystery to her then and now. Only now she witnessed his real feelings and behavior. It was intriguing, but even more it was scary.

“I should go now. You two. Get safely home,” Taemin bid goodbye and left Jinri’s sight. She was left standing there, with hanging open.

“There you are!” It was Krystal’s voice coming from afar. “I looked everywhere for you! Let’s get going.” ‘She didn’t see us talking, right?’ Jinri thought before turning to her friend. She then walked over to Krystal, with plastered smile fooling the friend. Jinri was a bit glad she witnessed Taemin’s turmoil now- she was step ahead of Krystal. She cached her train of thoughts and flashed a true wide smile. She now knows a bit more of him, she has seen him the way nobody has probably seen him before.

When they got on the bus from the airport to the Seoul’s centre, she remembered the moment Taemin asked her friend’s number. He didn’t even greet her or ask about her well-doings; he just mentioned that he met Krystal before and forgot to ask her number. Jinri now glanced at Krystal, who was wathing the road through a window on their left. Jinri didn’t know why, but then she felt hurt. She wasn’t really a friend of Taemin’s, but she was the only person who could call him ‘oppa’. That is, until Krystal told her about their meeting and called him like that. Jinri was still more important to him, right?

‘Wait, what am I thinking? We’re just friends…” Jinri suddenly felt really sad. She was sorry for Krystal, Jinri has bad-mouthed her in front of Taemin. She also felt sad about herself. Her feelings for Taemin might be growing, even if she doesn’t want it to happen. She never loved, after all. Actually, Jinri always thought that girls in love are pathetic. And look at her now- being hurt by Taemin, but still thinking about him. Jinri then hoped that if her feelings are true, Krystal and Taemin won’t cherish their feelings for each other. The two girls just started getting along again. And what now- boy-trouble will separate them again?

Same day, 19:03, Krystal’s apartment

The drama she was currently watching on TV was too gruesome for her, so Krystal got up and turned the TV off. She took her laptop from the table and sat on the couch. She heard someone walking in. She didn’t need to see the person to guess who it was.

“Grabbed some pizza on the way home. Care to join my dinner?” Luhan stood in front of her, flat box on his hands. Krystal chuckled and nodded. It was usual for him to come around almost every evening since he closed the café. Every time he bought some food, so Krystal didn’t have to cook anything. Since cooking wasn’t a pleasant thing for her, she gladly accepted the food every time. Now too, she got up, took the pizza box from him and placed it on the dining table which is only a few meters away from the window.

“Want to watch a movie?” she suggested while looking around for napkins.

“Again?” Luhan chuckled; they always watched movies while hanging out.

“Do you have any better idea?”

“In fact, I do. It’s not that late, so how about after we eat we go to café?”

“Your café?” Krystal took one pizza piece and started eating. “Isn’t it closed?”

“It is. But all the work has been almost done already, so I can give you an exclusive view of inside.”

“Alright. When is it opening again?”

“Next Monday. I hope you’ll be a regular client again, Krystal.”

“Sure thing. Where else I can hangout when I have a free period?” Krystal then took another piece. The pizza is disappearing really quickly, so they’ll be on their way soon.

“Oh yeah, you study at Seoul University. How is it there?”

“Can’t say it’s a carefree life, absolutely not, but I’m trying. I’m currently the second best student there,” Krystal felt proud about her achievements. She worked really hard to get the second place. But her thoughts quickly went to Taemin. She decided that she wouldn’t try to get in contact with him. If he wants to talk to her, he should do the first move.

“Impressive, nerd.” Luhan joked, but seeing Krystal’s expression he shut up. With just one word (nerd) she thought of Kai. All the times she met him, she almost got in trouble. Krystal’s going to stay away from him at all costs.

“Earth to Krystal. Seriously, what’s on your mind?” Krystal smiled at Luhan. She can tell him.

“Well, to start, I’m a bad girlfriend.” Luhan just raised his brow, waiting for her to continue.  “I’m always dumped, sometimes cheated on by boys. The thing is, it’s my own entire fault,” she was on the verge of crying. Luhan came to her and cupped her burning cheeks with his hands.

“Don’t say that. You’re too sweet to be heartbroken.”

“But Luhan, I get into a new relationship every one-two months. Now it’s probably my new record of being single for three months. I really at dating.”

“Or maybe your choices of guys is terrible,” he laughed. Krystal too couldn’t help but giggle. Nevertheless, she pushed Luhan’s hands and continued.

“That may also be a big factor.” Krystal even smiled. “But I and my friend came up with a plan.”

“What is it?” Luhan noticed her hesitating so he asked her.

“I promised that I won’t get in a relationship until I’ll feel that spark, that feeling of true love.”

“You do understand that it’s a big deal? Aren’t you afraid that you won’t know when the feeling’s true?”

“I am. But I promised my friend. We just started getting along again, after me abandoning her for my love life. I really don’t want to lose her again. At least I don’t want it to be my mistake, like always.”

“Well, what can I say; many guys will be sad about such a gorgeous girl becoming a nun.”

“Lu! I’m not becoming a nun!” Krystal playfully smacked his arm while giggling. “I’m just reserving myself for that ‘special someone’.”

“That’s exactly what I meant.” He then glanced at the clock on the wall. “We should get going before it gets dark.”

“Okay.”

20:34, outside the café.

Luhan unlocked the front doors and went inside, Krystal after him. Once inside, she couldn’t help herself from clapping.

“Lu, it’s a masterpiece!” She then looked around the newly designed café. New creamy wallpapers, new wood tables and seats, golden details here and there- it looked absolutely amazing to her eyes. It felt really sophisticated, classy, but still a bit laid back café. It felt like home to Krystal. She definitely loved the new changes. She then glanced at the garden. It still was here! Only now there were new exotic plants, a small fountain within the square of grass, there was even three small decorative trees. Krystal turned her sight to her favorite seat. It was changed as well; the new big windows gave a really nice view of the street. Also, overall it looks like café is divided to different sections: there’s big tables that fit family of eight or six, also in the same side is small playground for kids. On the other side are more quiet seats, probably for couples or friends. In between are regular size tables for other clients. That’s also the place where Krystal’s table was. She found it ironical how her seat was just like her life itself. It was neither love relationship nor friends and family related. It was in between.

“I’m glad to hear you like it. I was quite unsure about this color…”

21:11, outside Krystal’s apartment.

“Thanks for showing me the new design. I think you did really well, it will definitely attract many clients.”

“Oh yes, it sure will.” Krystal raised her brows- was he that confident? “When you’ll see the new staff, you’ll get what I mean.” She then mouthed quiet ‘okay’ and was about to say bye, when a girl approached them. Luhan quickly went to greet her and pecked a soft kiss on her cheek. Krystal didn’t expect it coming, so she turned from the two and awkwardly stared at her doors, not knowing what to do. Luhan waved Krystal a fast goodbye, not even sparing her a look, and ran upstairs with the girl, their hands interlocked. Krystal thought she shouldn’t mind his ways with girls, but she didn’t want to see him being a playboy either. Talking about her worries with him would be futile. They already got in a conflict because of her sneaky nose. It didn’t have anything to do with her, she tried to comfort herself. But it still felt wrong to her. She just wanted to believe that Luhan doesn’t treat them badly like Kai does. Or that he ignores them afterwards like Taemin.

11:47, Kai’s house.

“We have to talk.” Kai heard a familiar voice and pushed a girl away from a kiss. Then he grabbed her blouse from the ground and threw it to her, stood up and pushed her all the way through the entrance doors. Taemin stood by the wall, his arms crossed.

“What do you want? I never thought you’ll dare to come here.”

“What you did was low,” Taemin began. Kai just smirked ant flopped himself on the couch. Taemin took a seat near Kai, only small table separating them.

“And what did I exactly do?” Kai was clearly amused by his older brother accusing him.

“You know what I mean, Jongin.”

“Don’t use the name my mother gave me, you bastard brother. And you could have expected it coming. I promised to you something that time, remember?” Kai’s voice was now aggressive; he doesn’t let someone call him by his true name easily.

“But lying to our parents? That’s too much even for you. Both of us know that I didn’t take your money nor did I bully you. Stop lying. You should understand that it won’t change…”

“Yeah, it won’t change anything! But at least I feel better now. I like to see you suffer.”

“Jon… Kai. We’re not children anymore. It should stop for both of our sakes.”

“Children or not, I’ll keep my promise. You’re never going to feel love, just like I never did.”

“That’s stupid! Our parents…”

“No… my and your biological father and you mother. She’s nothing to me.”

“They would be really sad hearing this. You got me into this mess, you should at least apologize. You have a big advantage against me and you know it.”

“That’s what cowards say.” Kai chuckled and turned the TV on with a remote. Taemin just signed. “You should be asking me for my forgiveness, not the other way around. You stole everything that was dear to me. My mother, my father… my first love. You’ll be in my debt for even living, forever.”

“That’s childish, Kai! I never took those things from you! And you call this living? I’m barely existing! Our parents always believe in whatever you say, even if it’s my mother, not yours! I always get in trouble; I even had to live separately from my family since primary school! And you’re always trying to find my blind spot; I can’t even have true friends because of you…”

“You have. And I don’t believe in the whole ‘friendship’ between you two bull! If you’ll fall head over heels for Krystal, I’ll make not only you suffer, but I’ll make her life a living nightmare too.”

“You’re right, we aren’t friends. And we never will be. So you can get off her back. Don’t you dare to get her into this mess.”

“Too late, brother.”

“What do you mean?!” Taemin couldn’t take the dark atmosphere anymore; he let his bad temper show itself. He grabbed Kai’s shirt, to what Kai responded with a hard punch to Taemin’s face. Both of them got up and got into fighting positions. Taemin spit out blood.

“She’s in my business, now. I already have gotten her into one of ‘those’ parties… She’s soon going to become like all the other girls.

“So staying away from her now won’t help, huh…”

“Not a chance.” And so their fist fight began.

__________________________________________________________

What do you think? To explain better, Jinri never had deep feelings for anyone, just like Krystal. But she found herself falling for Taemin, who she thought of as a friend only (she noticed it almost the same way Krystal did, through sadness and angriness).

Also I thought it was about time to introduce a bit of Kai’s and Taemin’s relationship. I believe it will be explained more in about 5 chapters (I really don’t know yet ;D ).

Aren’t Luhan x Krystal lame here? I need to think of something more exiting for them in the next chapters, right?

AND ALSO!!! THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!! I have 18 subscribers now and 12 comments!!! If you just saw me dancing around my room earlier ;’D I’m soo full of happiness right now!!! Thank you all again!

As always, comments keep me going!

p.s. listened to f(x) album 'pink tape', exo 'growl' albums while typing 7th and 6th chapters. Absolutely love their music!
