Change
Not What You ThinkThat little diner just wasn't the same without "Taeyeon" there, but Minho was glad that Taemin hadn't showed up for work the next day. The boy needed to take some time, not just to think over Minho's proposition, but to deal with his loss.
Minho decided not to visit him that day, but he had left him a text, just to let him know he was there if he needed him.
As much as he wanted to run to his apartment and comfort him, Taemin needed space to breathe.
That didn't mean he wasn’t thinking about him though. Boy, he must have some feelings for the kid to always be concerned about him so much.
He was pulled from his train of thought when Sunny stopped by his table to refill his glass. He offered her his thanks with a half-hearted smile.
"How is he?" she asked quietly. Her normally bubbly smile was absent that day, as if she too was grieving.
"He?" he replied cautiously.
"Taemin."
"You know?" he asked, surprised.
"Of course I know," she replied with her signature smile returning briefly. "I've known since he started working here. He was pretty obvious."
"Oh...it took me forever to find out."
"Really? So is that why you broke up? You realized he was a boy?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
She chuckled softly.
"But he didn't like men either, so it all worked out," he said, but as he spoke, he felt a little sad for some reason. He guessed he just missed the relationship he had with Taeyeon, before he learned the truth.
At some point, he actually thought he would propose to her someday. What an odd thought.
"I think he did like you though, in his own way," she said as she casually leaned against his table, "He was always...smiling. He never really smiled like that before meeting you."
As if on cue, the door to the diner opened and Taemin walked in. Minho turned as Sunny abandoned her pitcher of tea on his table and went to meet her co-worker. She immediately embraced him, offering her condolences.
Taemin looked a little more stable than he was the day before, but his sorrow was still obvious. He glanced Minho's way briefly, before Sunny pulled back from the hug.
"Is our boss in?"
"Yeah, he's in the kitchen."
"I need to talk to him, and let him know I'm going to have to quit."
"You're quitting?" Sunny said, surprised and upset.
He nodded. "I was offered a job out of town, so I'm moving."
Minho couldn't keep back a smile.
"It's so sudden though. Are you sure you want to move so soon? You're going through a lot, you don't want to be alone."
"I won't be alone." He glanced Minho's way awkwardly. "His father offered me the job."
Minho's smile turned awkward under Sunny's suspicious stare.
It was obvious she was disappointed, but he knew she was only looking out for her friend. "Well if it's a better job than waiting tables, you should go for it. You should do what's best for you."
For the first time in two days, Taemin smiled. "Thank you, Sunny."
"And I expect Minho to be watching over you?" she asked, glaring at Minho once again.
"Like a creepy obsessed ex-boyfriend," he confirmed.
She merely shook her head at him, before giving her co-worker a pat on the arm. "I'll go get the boss then. You wait here." She turned and disappeared into the kitchen, leaving Taemin and Minho alone together.
Minho let his smile mellow out as Taemin slid into the booth across from him. The two of them sat silently for a moment, and Minho wasn't sure what he should say to him. Thank him for accepting his offer? Congratulate him on his new job? Ask him how he was doing in general?
"It's kinda scary, you know," Taemin said, eventually breaking the silence.
"I know."
So much had happened. He had lost so much and was now leaving even more behind. Minho had a small bit of doubt over it. It might not have been the best time to make such a change, but Taemin had decided he wanted to.
"I'll be with you though."
Taemin smiled softly, before kicking him under the table, in the shin.
"Ouch! What was that for?"
"For still treating me like a girl."
Minho returned his kick in the shin. "That's for still dressing like one."
