Breakfast & Lunch

Not What You Think

Minho awoke the next morning to a beautiful day. The rain had stopped and the sun was shining. It was the first thing he saw as he dragged himself out of bed to take a peep into the living room. Taemin was where he had left him, still asleep on the couch.

Luckily his uncle wasn't home yet. It wasn't even seven o'clock, so he still had an hour or so before he returned home.

That was a good hour he could use to make some breakfast.

He went to the kitchen, and while he was in the middle of pulling some pans out of the cabinet, Taemin awoke. He looked groggy and a little disoriented.

Minho met his tired gaze with a smile. "Good morning."

Taemin blinked a few times, but didn't reply.

"How about eggs for breakfast?" Minho asked.

The boy became suddenly alert. He sat up quickly and threw off the blanket, before looking around the room for a clock. "What time is it?" he asked.

"Um..." Minho looked to the clock on the stove. "6:55."

"Damn it, I'm gonna be late for work!" He exclaimed. He immediately left the couch and ran to the bathroom, grabbing his purse along the way.

That was certainly gonna put a wrench in breakfast.

Disappointed, Minho set down the pan. Eggs were out of the question, but maybe he could make Taemin something to go. He heard the boy talking on the phone to his mother - explaining that he had fallen asleep on the couch - while he put some bread in the toaster.

He left the kitchen while it was toasting and wandered to the bathroom, which Taemin left open. He had just hung up the phone and was hurriedly applying his make-up. Minho's clothes were folded on the counter, exchanged for his dry work uniform, which was only half-way on. Minho couldn't help but stare at the padded bra he wore.

It was all a very strange, yet interesting sight.

"Stop it," Taemin said, quickly finishing with his lip gloss and stuffing it back in his purse.

"You're the one who left the door open," Minho countered with a shrug.

Taemin glared at him as he grabbed his shirt from where it was hanging on the towel bar. He put it on and was in the process of buttoning it up as he left the bathroom. "Well I thought you would have remembered I was a boy." He turned back to Minho before he could reply and asked, "How do I look?"

"Very pretty."

Taemin didn't react to the comment. He went straight for the door.

"Wait a minute!" Minho called. He went back to the kitchen and stopped the toaster, figuring a little bit toasted was better than nothing. He also grabbed an apple for him. "You gotta eat something."

Taemin smiled as he took the skimpy breakfast from him. "Thanks, Minho. For last night, too."

"Any time," he said with a charming smile - a smile he couldn't help but use around Taemin. Especially when he was dressed like that.

"See you later." Taemin disappeared after that, stuffing the toast in his mouth while hurrying to the restaurant before his shift started. Minho watched him walk away for a moment, before going back inside to make himself those eggs.

"Come on, Tae, it's my birthday. You have to be there!"

Minho sat at his favorite table in the restaurant, watching Taemin while chomping away at his lunch. The boy was in the middle of a conversation with Sunny, not far from his table. There were no other customers there at the moment, so their work hours were spent talking to one another and cleaning tables that didn't really need to be cleaned.

"I don't really like parties," Taemin was trying to explain. He left the blonde waitress to pour Minho another glass of iced-tea, which didn't really need refilling.

"It's not gonna be a crazy party! Only my friends will be there. And you're my friend, right?"

"Of course I am. But..."

"Come on. It'll be fun. And I want you there."

Taemin’s expression said he really wanted to refuse, but he also didn't want to disappoint her. He just stood there for a second, fumbling over what he should tell her.

"I'll go with you," Minho offered over the food in his mouth.

Taemin slowly turned to him with narrowed eyes. "We're not dating anymore, remember?"

Sunny scoffed and giggled, like she didn't believe it.

"Fine then. Go by yourself. Have a dozen drunken men hitting on you because you don't have a date."

Taemin narrowed his eyes further. After all, he had hit the nail on the head. That was the real reason Taemin wasn't keen on parties.

"There won't be drunken men there," Sunny said, "At least, I hope not..."

Another person finally entered the diner, ready to be waited on. Sunny gave Taemin one last hopeful look, before going to serve the customer. "Think about it. Please!" she was saying as she left.

Minho watched her walk away, before turning his attention back to Taemin. The boy once again looked unsure of what to do.

"Come on, parties are fun."

Taemin crashed heavily into the seat across from Minho. "I don't like parties, and not just because of the drunken men."

"I'll be there with you, and it's not like you have to stay all night."

He was contemplating it.

"Besides, you don't know where you'll be a year from now, or if you and Sunny will even still be friends. You might not get the chance to celebrate her birthday with her again."

He sighed heavily and rolled his eyes. "Fine. We'll go for an hour."

Minho smiled triumphantly. "Good. It's a date then. I'll pick you up at seven."

"No," he replied firmly, "I'll meet you at your place. I don't need my mother thinking anything more of our strange friendship." He left the table after that, passing by Sunny's way to tell her his decision.

A/N: It's been over a week since my last update. I got all sidetracked...

A lot of you have been asking about Taemin's POV. This whole story is actually already written out, and for some reason I never wrote it from Taemin's thoughts. Not sure why. So sorry folks, we'll never get to peer into Taemin's mind. :/

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the chapter. Comments are always appreciated. ^_^
