Chapter 15

YEAR 2. SPRING.

Kaeun could count that it has been almost a year since she entered the Women's Prison.

She was proud to say she was settling in quite well, getting along well with her other fellow prison mates made her really comfortable as how she was now, and sometimes she could say she couldn't be anymore contented.

Even more recently, she have been thinking yet again how different things would be if the others did not accept her so easily, Kaeun easily admitted to herself that perhaps these seven girls are starting to become more close to her.

Sometimes while they idle around, Kaeun would find herself hugging her legs gleefully, just unconsciously smiling at her playful Unnies sitting around her, wondering how they could create that tiny bit of happiness out from the bitterness they have received all their lives.

And yet they still continued to surprise her endlessly.

~

Kaeun couldn't really pull up her jaw that has dropped on the floor. She was far beyond surprised at what she just heard.

Sure she understood that Raina and Officer Bekah were close despite their two very different positions in the prison, but never had she imagined them actually being childhood friends.

Especially when one had to stay behind bars, while the other had to make sure she continued to do so.

Not that it was something very shocking and big, but still, Kaeun wouldn't have bought it even if Eyoung told her about.

But when it was Officer Bekah who personally comfirmed it herself, Kaeun couldn't help but believe her.

And she thought she knew a lot about the other members.

Yet she was so wrong.

"Yah, I think I pretty much am here because of Raina you know!"

Bekah would say with a pout, giving Kaeun more than enough reasons to cotinue letting her jaw drop.

~~~~~
~
Hyerin was only ten when her parents moved to Seoul in hopes for a better business.
Her family was counted as one of the most well-off families in their small town, so people would naturally believe that their move over to Seoul would do good to them.
 Hyerin was also an obedient girl, so she too was brought along with her parents without complaints.
Even though during her time there Hyerin have met up with so many different types of people in Seoul, despite their differences, sadly all she could still remember was that they all had this one thing in common. They all had the nasty habit to tease and laugh at her because of her accent.
Bullies or not, she was still mocked at countless of times and over just beacuse her way of talking would differ so much from a normal Seoul person, making Hyerin feel very isolated away from these people.
Well, it was not her fault that she grew up differently and spoke differently, Hyerin oftenly thought that if they were to blame, they should blame her parents for bringing her up speaking like this.
But despite the many hardships Hyerin had when she was small, all these happened only before she met Bekah, a girl who was of Hyerin's age, and someone who wouldn't for who she was.
Bekah claimed that she too was self because she did not have naturally black hair but instead, a shining, blond hair. She didn't feel that she was at any fault also because her father was a foreigner, so she found it more natural that she was blonde.
The kids wouldn't believe a thing as absurd as that however, it was something that children has not been seen before in South Korea then.
Bekah always hated that she couldn't rebut against the words of her peers, for her father was always too busy to actually catch a glimpse of her almost everyday in her life, more the less visit her in school, giving her less to no chances to prove to her peers what she said was true.
However, even though Bekah then could pretty much sympathise mostly with Hyerin, she doesn't always agree with everything Hyerin says.
She still told Hyerin "Be proud for you are special, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!"
And when Hyerin thought further about it, she would agree to what her friend said, for she was always so damn right.
~
While the other Seoul kids love picking on Hyerin a lot, they would often pull her pigtails and imitate her accent in a horrible way so that they could all ridicule her. But never once have they failed to scatter away because Bekah would use any means to stop them even though some others who felt unfair for Hyerin wouldn't dare stop these kids themselves.
And Hyerin had a lot to thank her for that.
She would always do so by keeping Bekah accompanied even though the poor girl was shunned by everyone else for looking different.
Hyerin would laugh to herself saying, "Why should I avoid Bekah when she is perfectly normal?"
Thus they became inseperable, and also named the closest two friends.
~
When they turned 16, Bekah aspired to be part of the police force.
Seeing that the duty of an officer was to guide the misguided and to teach them the sense on how to get back on the right path, it amazes her somehow.
Naturally, she planned to enroll herself to be part of the police academy when she gets older and would start to devote to her dreams when she becomes successful.
But as for Hyerin, she had no particular preference for anything yet, but yet she believed that she probably would enroll into a university so that she could get an office job, or anything that could be as comfortable as that.
Obviously Bekah scolded her for being so laid back, and chided at how she thought lesser of her future.
Hyerin could just laugh softly.
Bekah always knew what to say.
And Hyerin had to end of their conversation by saying, "Okay fine, fine. I would think about it next time."
~
If only Hyerin knew earlier, she wouldn't have said that.
If only she knew that her parents were already set to move back the family to their hometown, she would have told Bekah to be prepared to say goodbye.
She remembered screaming and yelling for all she could at her parents just because she doesn't want to go back.
And now, all she could ever think of was how she was going to break the news to Bekah.
~
"Yah! Oh Hyerin!"
Hyerin tried her hardest to walk faster.
But eventually Bekah still caught up.
Grabbing her by the shoulder, Bekah spun Hyerin around to face her.
"I don't understand... It has been days, why wouldn't you talk to me?!"
Hyerin wouldn't look at Bekah in her eye for she did not dare.
Taking in a huge breath, Hyerin coldly responded,
"Wasn't it obvious that I was trying to avoid you?"
"Huh? W-was it something I said? I-I can apologi-"
"No you don't understand Bekah! It isn't about you... I-Its me."
Bekah just stood there in a minute of silence, trying to figure out what kept Hyerin from actually talking to her.
And she spoke again, this time with a softer and gentler approach.
"Then make me understand."
"B-Bekah, I..."
Hyerin found no words coming out of for a moment.
She closed her eyes and breathed in.
After clearing , she breathed out, and opened them again.
And she spoke in a voice that was so close to a whisper.
"I am leaving."
Bekah could hear her entire world falling apart.
"W-what do you mean? Was it something I have done that is causing you to run away from m-"
"No, Bekah! I said that is is not you! It's me, damnit!"
Bekah went speechless, taken aback at her once quiet and calm friend bursting in anger.
Hyerin just sighed.
"My parents wanted me to go back so that I can get accepted into the University there. They said that the University would definitely accept me once they knew I was once a student who studied in Seoul."
Bekah knew neither her or Hyerin wanted this to happen but she guessed it was something that could not be stopped.
Nevertheless, she still broke the question.
"When are you leaving then?"
Hyerin didn't answer.
But yet Bekah understood.
She guessed it must be really close then.
~
The next day Bekah noticed that Hyerin didn't attend school.
And it became Bekah's first to skip class.
~
"Hey."
"Omo, Bekah-yah... you are here. Don't you have school?"
"Don't be silly, Hyerin-ah."
There Bekah found Hyerin back at home, with all the packed up suitcases and boxes.
Like how she correctly guessed, Hyerin would be leaving the day after.
But yet Bekah couldn't smile, it was not like it would do the situation any better guessing it right.
Hyerin wouldn't even face Bekah nor look at her in eye.
Obviously it showed that Hyerin did not want to part, for she stood there silently even though her parent were calling her to start grabbing her things already.
Bekah sighed, as she took the pen off from her bag and wrote on Hyerin's arm.
"I asked my mom to help me prepare a telephone number. The phone number is for the telephone booth outside my house. Call me between 5 to 6pm, I will be waiting for your call then."
Hyerin left agaped as she couldn't find her words.
How she wanted to tell Bekah that she was such a precious friend but yet she still found herself entirely speechless.
She hugged Bekah tight for one last time, and bid her goodbye.
On the way back home in a car, Hyerin couldn't stop the pen ink on her arm.
~
To be honest, Hyerin only started to go astray when she fought more with her parents after moving back.
The rebellious stage of life, people would say.
She hated them, because they would not listen to anything she say.
Even though Hyerin have been talking to Bekah over the phone every single day, Bekah could still notice that Hyerin was speaking lesser and lesser, her interest in their talks was fading off evidently.
Hyerin wouldn't tell Bekah that it was because she fought badly with her parents before she made her calls.
She wouldn't bare tell Bekah that the reason why Hyerin started all these with her parents was mainly because of her.
Eventually, when Hyerin's calls stopped coming, Bekah knew that something was definitely wrong.
~
When she reached 20, Hyerin have finally met her bad group of friends.
They did go drinking, sneaking into clubs or take a spin in stolen cars without a license any other day.
Hyerin wouldn't like to live a life like this, but it was better then facing her parents every single day.
Besides, they would always listen to her troubles, sometimes even helping her curse at her parents when she was drunk.
But Hyerin knew where her limits were most of the times, there were some things she still would not do illegally.
For example driving around after doses of alcohol.
She still remembered that Bekah said that drunk-driving was one of the most nasty cases that Hyerin should never commit.
She always bared that in mind, consciously or unconsciously.
But unfortunate things still happen even when one is not drunk.
~
"Hello?"
Bekah was taken a back that someone has answered the phone after a long time.
If only Hyerin knew that Bekah had been calling to reach her phone instead every single day over a span of two years. And that it had been two years since she last talked to her.
Bekah was so excited at the fact that Hyerin have finally wanted to talk to her, and she couldn't wait to tell her how she was doing well in the Police academy, only waiting for herself to be posted somewhere.
But the fact that it wasn't Hyerin who picked up the phone made her heart drop.
"I am sorry, but... Hyerin is not available to talk to you now."
Bekah would have mentally slapped herself there and then when she asked the reason why.
Almost immediately after the call she started to take out some papers and notes.
~
It was an act of foolish loyalty that 22-year old Hyerin had to pick up one of her drunk friends after she heard that the wasted girl was being kicked out by one of the clubs.
She decided to place the drunk friend at the back seat so that she could concentrate on driving better.
But had she not been concentrating too much on the road, Hyerin would have notice her friend getting closer behind her as she drove.
And suddenly, the friend threw her hands over Hyerin's eyes, covering her sight off from the road. In shock, Hyerin swerved left and right before using one of her free hands to yank those hands blocking her vision.
Her eyes widened when she saw that she was going to crash head on with an oncoming truck.
She quickly made a sharp swerve to the right, narrowly avoiding the truck, but what she failed to avoid was the old woman at the side of the road.
Overwhelmed at what she had done, she practically screamed.
Ther court rules,
Oh Hyerin to 8 years in the Women's Prison.
~
As Hyerin was first being escorted into her cell, she hung her head low, deep thoughts running through her head.
But when she noticed a familiar blond hair figure chatting with her cellmates, her thoughts just disappeared and her mind becomes completely blank.
When the blonde noticed her, she turned and smiled vibrantly.
The person in front of her had that smile Hyerin found so damn similar to a friend's that she had not seen in a long time.
"It has been a long time, Hyerin-ah."
"B-Bekah...How did you..."
"Pabo. You think you can hide away from me?"
Bekah just smirked at her.
Maybe Hyerin would eventually find out that Bekah had herself appealed over to the Women's Prison in their town.
~
Well, now that she thought about it, Kaeun realised that she doesn't know that much about Raina.
Her Unnie didn't seem like anything extraordinary, she was a sweet and nice Unnie and Kaeun just knew that when she first talked to her, she instantly could feel comfortable with her.
The maknae figured that perhaps she hasn't appreciate the special traits of her Unnie, for she did not paid attention to her as much as the others.
And it wasn't long before she could comfirm that.
~
The Government had recently sent a head officer and his team to run a check on the operations carried out in the Women's Prison after somebody anonymously sent in an appeal a week ago, stating the unfair and strict regulations made in the Prison.
Officer Jo was obvious infuriated about it, an appeal like that meant that there was someone who wanted to kick him off from his position.
He primarily suspected Officer Dambi, remembering that she often violently objected to his ways of handling and harsh punishment, but he did not make a bold accusation at her for he had no evidence that it was her in the first place.
But due to the appeal, it really started get on his nerves beacuse the head officer admitted to him that he have been comtemplating on whether he should abolish the punishment of canning female prisoners in the Women's Prison.
And to whoever the anonymous person (who sent the appeal) was, he or she was winning.
Officer Jo slammed his fists on the table.
He would not give his position up as easily as like that.
~
Jungah held the bridge of her nose when Bekah was standing right outside both her cell and Kaeun's cell with a small child standing behind her.
The seven other girls gathered around the doors of their respective cells as they tried to catch a glimpse of the cute little girl, hands stretching out of the bars as they tried to reach out to her.
"So you are saying that this kid is some head officer's daughter?"
"Yah Unnie! This isn't any head officer's daughter... this is the daughter of the head officer who would be our only hope in taking out that horrible punishment!"
Bekah whispered the 2nd half of her sentence loudly.
"But you don't expect us to take care of her right?"
Bekah just grinned sheepishly.
Jungah rolled her eyes.
She instantly knew that it was the other girls who requested for this.
"Pleaseee Unnieeee~ Just for two hours! Look at the rest, they are all so eager to see her!"
Jungah could never say no and Bekah knows it.
She just hoped that she was doing the right thing, allowing the child to interact with crazy girls like them.
"Ugh, fine."
"Yay!"
The rest shrilled.
"Okay kiddos, just help me make sure Officer Jo doesn't see her, if not all our efforts would be wasted!" Bekah warned the other girls.
"I am afraid we can't ensure you that, Bekah-yah. Officer Jo have been increasing his rounds of checking on us recently." Jungah said with creased eyebrows.
Bekah sighed.
"Its okay, Unnie. Try your best not to let him see her."
~
Eventually the child was brought into Kaeun's cell, because Lizzy and Nana claimed that they would be better taking care of the kids.
The kid at first looked shy, but now after a few minutes with her, Kaeun knew that the small girl was actually quite brave for she doesn't seem scared of these scary looking women prisoners in front of her.
She would make a bright and mature kid, Kaeun would say.
And when Lizzy asked for the child's name, she was surely surprised.
"Choi Sooyoung-imnida! Please take care of me well!"
"Hey kid!! My name is Sooyoung too!"
Lizzy squealed in delight as she hugged little Sooyoung tightly like a teddy bear.
"U-unnie, you are squeezing me too tight..."
"Ooh, sorry..."
"Its okay, Unnie."
"How old are you kid?"
"Eight years old."
"Eight years old? Oh how quite cute!"
Lizzy couldn't help but squirm at the cuteness the girl was emitting.
While Kaeun and Eyoung could facepalm themselves laughing, Nana was staring jealously at Lizzy.
"Yah Park Lizzy! That's not fair! I want to speak to her too!"
Nana crawled closer to the girl as she took little Sooyoung by the hand and pulled her away from Lizzy.
Lizzy just stuck her tongue out.
Nana stuck her own tongue back before turning to face the girl as she patted her on the head.
Softly, Nana spoke to Sooyoung.
"You know you remind me of the other Sooyoung over there a lot... Just promise me that you don't grow up like Lizzy, can't you see what has become of her?"
Little Sooyoung tilted her head, confused.
"She became a crazy b*tch."
"Yah! I heard that!"
Nana just tumbled over laughing away. Little Sooyoung too laughed as they started to make a two-man team against Lizzy.
"Arraseo, Unnie." Sooyoung said, nodding really obediently.
Nana high fived Sooyoung as Lizzy was left in a corner to pout, leaving Eyoung and Kaeun to giggle at their silly antics.
While the four was too concentrated on little Sooyoung, they failed to notice Officer Jo already making his daily rounds around the cells.
~
"Omo, eotteoke Unnie?? The kids doesn't know that Officer Jo is coming!"
Jungah knew that something like that would happen, and she blamed herself because it was not like she could stop from happening but still she let it happen. She went into deep thought, racking her brains hard to find a way out.
Jooyeon then turned to Uee, who was still desperately trying to get the attention of the other 4 girls in the cell opposite.
Jooyeon could only shake her head agitatedly, not even Uee could make the situation any better for Officer Jo was already coming their way.
Then she noticed that Raina was standing silently, as the younger girl was intently staring at her nervously.
"R-Raina? Y-you got a plan?"
Raina played with the hem of her uniform as she quietly mouth some words hesistantly.
"Mianhae Unnie... W-we don't have time, f-forgive me..."
And Jooyeon's eyes widen when Raina balled her fist right in front of her, before getting hit in the cheek without warning.
Uee could only stare unbelievably as she screamed when Jooyeon fell onto the floor.
"YAAAH!!"
Raina couldn't save herself from Uee's larger figure as the older girl launched at her, both of them went to the floor as well.
Even though with Uee fingers wrapping around Raina's neck made the younger girl feel dizzy, through a desperate eye contact with Jungah, Jungah finally understood what Raina was doing.
Immediately, the eldeset ran towards the entrance of their cell as she shouted,
"Anybody help!! The girls in here are fighting!!"
That caught the eyes of all the rest of the prisoners, including the girls from Kaeun's room, and obviously stole Officer Jo's attention entirely as he went straight for their cell without finishing looking at the rest of the cells.
Nana's eyes widened at the sight of Officer Jo's back right outside their cell, swiftly she picked little Sooyoung up and carried her to the other room to hide the girl.
And when she came back to look at the situation outside, she saw a fuming Uee and a quite ruffled up Raina under the hands of Officer Jo as he had them both escorted away. Jungah had that look of worry painted over her face again, as she looked over to Nana.
Nana just nodded back.
Jungah closed her eyes, oh how she knew today would be a tough day.
~
After the whole incident, Kaeun concluded that Raina was either really smart or just plain crazy doing what she had done. The older girl practically staged a fight in a few seconds to distract the officer just now from them being discovered with a child.
They were lucky that neither her nor Uee had to go through any punishment, after Officer Dambi spent hours convincing Officer Jo that it was just a 'misunderstanding'. (Obviously after that officer Dambi also warned Bekah never to do something as reckless as that again.)
Kaeun could now arguably say that Raina was undoubtly the most quick-witted person she ever met, and found that the girl can be quite shrewd, for she sure could make good use of her brain and make good decisions with her options.
The maknae was amazed for she suddenly found her Unnie gifted in so many ways.
~
It has been a while since the Prison went out of control like this, with fights breaking out everywhere around the field and chaos could be seen almost everywhere they went.
Raina concluded that it was beacuse Officer Jo have been punishing too many of them lately, because many of them have been screaming in hatred over the nights, crying in agony over the pain he caused.
"Prisoners overcame their fear over punishments like these," she would say.
"They just don't seem afraid of his nasty little of tricks anymore."
"Then do be extra careful during these few days, kids." Jungah added.
And before Kaeun knew it, her Unnies all dispersed during field time that day, leaving her to fend for herself.
~
Well it was not that Kaeun couldn't fight for herself, but she couldn't be sure that she would be able able to hold off a bunch of the prisoners all alone. So she held her guard up all the time even as she strolled aimlessly around the field.
After an hour or so, somehow the maknae found herself stumbling into one of the toilets while she was walking.
To be honest, it was her first time in a prison toilet outside her cell. Its walls stained brown, showing that it had been sometime since they got the place refurbished properly.
Unconsciously Kaeun went up against the mirrors to take a look at the rusted sides of the sink. But once she raised her head to look into the dirtied mirror, Kaeun mouth came out with a short gasp for there was someone behind her.
Her eyes widen as she turned around, surprised.
Its...
"Rain-"
Before Kaeun could finish her sentence, Raina grabbed Kaeun by the shoulders and roughly shoved her into one of the cubicles, the Unnie's face showing no expression at all.
Kaeun was really alarmed by her actions. However, even before the maknae got a chance to talk, Raina immediately used her right hand to cover over Kaeun's mouth and locked the cubicle door with her other hand.
Kaeun instinctively tried to pull off the hand from cupping over but Raina swatted Kaeun's fingers off, insisting for them to stay in that position.
The maknae's mind was in a state of confusion as she tried to muffle out her words.
Raina shot her a desperate look and sharply placed a finger on her own lips, asking Kaeun to shut up immediately.
Kaeun saw Raina stretch out her neck, listening intently for any noise made outside.
Just then, Kaeun could hear someone else entering the toilet, followed by the sounds of talking.
When Kaeun recognised the owner of one of the voices, she almost let out a squeak in shock.
Minhee.
The maknae estimated that there were perhaps five people standing right outside the door at that moment.
When the talking outside their cubicle just stopped, Kaeun held in her breath, hoping that it was not because they have been caught already.
Kaeun just froze along with Raina, as they prayed that they have not been discovered.
If they were found inside the cubicle together, both of them would be dead meat.
After a round of silence, Kaeun believed that the gang must have left and the coast was clear.
So when Raina uncovered , the maknae let out the breath she had been holding in all these while, when suddenly-
"What was that??"
Minhee must have heard her.
And when Raina thought things could not get any more worse, Kaeun accidentally let a small gasp escape her lips before she could cover up .
"And that!"
Raina just faceplamed.
Unfortunately for them, Minhee had locked her eyes on the cubible they were in already.
She stared at it suspiciously as she knocked loudly and questioned,
"Who's inside!?"
Raina and Kaeun kept silent.
They did be fools if they opened their mouths. Their voices would immediately give their identity away.
"Whoever you are, you better come out on the count of 3 if not I have your guts ripped out!!"
Obviously both the girls stuck in the cubicle were panicking at the threat, but still neither of them touched the door.
"1..."
Raina breathed in deep, as she used one hand to hold onto the handle of the door, ready to twist the lock open.
"2..."
She used her other hand to grab onto Kaeun's wrist firmly.
Kaeun just looked at her as though Raina was crazy.
Is her Unnie expecting to face Minhee and her gang with just the two of them?
"3!"
In a blink of an eye, Raina swung the cubicle door open full force and started sprinting out of the place while Kaeun gets tugged along to run as well.
And they ran out of the toilet before Minhee could catch what had just past by her.
~
Kaeun couldn't stop chuckling.
"How did you find me Unnie?"
"I was lucky, I guess."
Kaeun knew her Unnie was just being humble.
"Anyway thanks Unnie, I could have died there without anyone knowing."
Raina smiled at her joke as she continued staring at the setting sun across the horizon.
"Don't mention it."
You silly girl, Unnie wouldn't allow that.
"You know, Kaeun..."
"Ne,Unnie?"
"You remind me of so many things sometimes." Raina said as she turned to face Kaeun with a smile.
Kaeun returned her Unnie a small smile before she looked back at her fingers and answered back softly, voice reduced to almost a whisper.
"Oh, really Unnie? Haha... what do I remind you of?"
"Unnie doesn't really know, perhaps Kaeun you, remind me of me."
"Oh, is that so Unnie?"
"Maybe my younger self, Kaeun."
Kaeun smiled again at her answer.
Well Raina doesn't lie, they were here on a similar basis.
Both misled, and let astray.
They have reached that point in life where they have fallen down too hard, ending someone else's life unwantedly, but still given this undeserving 2nd chance to live their lives properly.
And also they both of them were extremely lucky people.
"Is that suppose to be good or bad?" Kaeun joked.
"Assume things positively, Kaeun-ah. Don't make Unnie look bad!" Raina laughed soundlessly along with Kaeun's loud mischievous laughter.
But once the laughs died down, Raina started speaking again in a serious tone.
"But Kaeun-ah, do promise Unnie one thing please?"
Kaeun hesitated for a while before she answered.
"Ne, Unnie."
Raina's request was supposed to be a sincere one, from an Unnie to her dongsaeng.
What she truly wanted was Kaeun to be grateful for everything in life, good or bad.
And to do so, she could only think of one solution.
"Do live your life well, yeah?"
Kaeun nodded gingerly.
AN: IM POSTING THIS FASTER THAN I THOT OMG IT WAS A FEW DAYS AGO SINCE I POSTED THE PREVIOUS CHAP AND THIS ONE JUST CAME IN
HOW LUCKY ARE YOU GUYS NOW THAT I AM HAVING MY HOLIDAYS NOW
IT WAS AN EASIER CHAPTER THO SO I HAD IT WRITTEN OUT PRETTY QUICKLY (i PLANNED A LOT FOR THIS ONE)
well perhaps the next one would need some time tho :/ i can predict that the next one would be quite a tough one.
maybe i should stop narrating thru maknaez cos i want to try narrate some other ppl too
did i say the story goes on in an anti-cimatic fashion till the end??? maybe the next chapter would be the most climatic chapter then. ( MIGHT CHANGE THO, DONT GETTING YOUR HOPES HIGH haha)
Chapter 20: How lucky I am to stumbled upon this beautiful piece of art TT I like this so damn much omg I'm dying. I just love the way this story's written and just how clear everything was and just how you put me to slowly and slowly liking kaeun and eyoung >< (even tho I came here originally for NaLiz) however, thank you so much for this story, you deserve a lot better than what you received... Would totally recommending this later lol..
