The Internship
TWENTYTWO
Seorin sat in her room with Jinri. Her internship was officially over and there was still a few days left til university resumed.
She hadn't heard from Kyungsoo in five days. It wasn't a long time, but for some reason it felt like forever.
"Miss your boyfriend?"
Seorin scoffed. Those pretending days were over. "We're kind of not together anymore... Sort of," she replied vaguely, knowing an onslaught of curious questions that would follow.
"What? Why?! Did you guys break up?! Is it because the internship is over? That's stupid. Who cares if you go to different schools?" Jinri wouldn't let up. "Did you get into a fight? Was he only with you because it was convenient?!"
She sighed and shrugged. "It's nothing like that. We're just too busy now." Well, it was Kyungsoo who seemed to busy to call. He was probably caught up in the corporate life now. And it wasn't like they were really together, and it was kind of hard to explain to Jinri the whole situation, so she figured it would be best to just keep her answers vague.
She had been so excited to hear the news from Kyungsoo. She had felt so giddy when her phone rang, his name popping up on her screen. He had excitedly blurted out that he was actually being given the chance to lead Kangdo in the future. It was his dream come true, and she could practically feel his joy radiating through the phone. He had shyly whispered a sweet 'thanks,' and of course she had politely brushed it off saying she hadn't done much. She had almost responded with a, 'Yeah, what would you do without me?' but it hadn't seemed like the proper time for her sarcastic humor.
She had been so happy for him, and she still was. But it seemed like he had immediately been whisked away by the company and all the potential glory it offered.
The next day around noon, she received an unexpected knock on the door. She frowned, wondering who it could be. Jinri was working today and so the only other possibility was... Kyungsoo. She leaped to the door, trying not to get her hopes up. Why would he come unannounced after all? Perhaps he was a secret romantic and was trying to surprise her, she thought.
She eagerly swung open the door without checking who it was. It was a stupid and potentially dangerous move, but she didn't care.
She gasped. It wasn't Kyungsoo, but rather his brother. "Seungsoo-sshi," she murmured, trying to hide her disappointment. "What brings you here?" She was surprised he even knew where she lived. Of course she was in the company directory, but had he really bothered to look up her address?
Of course he had done precisely that. He had asked his secretary to find her file so he could come and see her again.
"Hello, Seorin-sshi," he greeted warmly. "I had something important to talk to you about, and I thought I'd come in person."
"Something important?" She gulped nervously.
"It's good news, really." He gave her a warm smile. "Have you eaten lunch yet? Why don't we talk over a meal?"
She looked down at her body and the way she was dressed. She definitely wasn't ready to go out anywhere, especially next to a spiffy proper man like Do Seungsoo. He was basically shining in his sleek navy suit. How he wasn't sweating in this humid heat was a mystery.
He told her kindly that he could wait out in front inside his car as she got ready.
She knew Kyungsoo wouldnt like that she was hanging out with him, but the internship is over, and Kyungsoo hadn't even bothered to drop by when his brother had. She rolled her eyes as she got dressed. She knew she was being huffy for no reason. He was never really her boyfriend.
But she could have sworn he had felt the spark too. Or was she just deluding herself? No, there was no way she could mistake the hand-holding and the unnecessary dates. She hoped to god he wasn't some kind of stereotypical rich boy who just wanted some summer fun.
She hopped into Seungsoo's car uneasily. He was being kind and friendly as usual with the smalltalk, asking her when school was starting and how she was spending her remaining days of summer.
"How's Kyungsoo?" She blurted. It was rather rude, but she couldn't hold back her curiosity.
Seungsoo turned to her with an amused smile, eyebrow raised. "Ah, my little brother. I was wondering when you'd eventually bring him up." She returned a guilty look, her lip caught between her teeth. "No, I would expect that much. You're dating after all." That made her feel even guiltier.
To her surprise, his smile turned a little lopsided. "It's interesting... I never thought I'd ever be jealous of my brother."
Her heart leaped to . What is that supposed to mean?
Noticing her fear, he let out a small chuckle. "You know, Kyungsoo has always wanted everything I had... and to take everything I wanted." He casually shrugged. "He'd love nothing more than to have what I want."
She tried to hide her shock, suppressing her eyes from widening. She was feeling a little uncomfortable, getting this eerie sense that Seungsoo was referring to her. But he was with Sunyoung - it didn't seem like the most wonderful relationship, but they were together. End of story. It didn't matt
