Selfish Monster

The Scarlet Letter

A/N: This is a double update, so read the previous chapter first

Luhan entered the fancy restaurant with his mother beside him. They approached the Han family who sat in the middle of the restaurant. This time, there was another person who sat with Mr. and Mrs. Han. He braced himself and ignored the stabbing feeling in his heart as he approached them.

He bowed to them. “I’m really sorry about the incident from last time, Mr.and Mrs. Han. That was very improper of me and I will not repeat such an act again.”

Mr. and Mrs. Han smiled warmly. “That’s okay, Luhan. It wasn’t your fault. We know that Cheonsa forced you. She can be such a rebel girl sometimes,” Mrs. Han said. Even when his eyes were avoiding ‘that’ someone, he could still imagine her rolling her eyes at that moment.

Luhan and his mother took a seat. There was one seat left for him and it was one that he secretly wished to avoid, but with his mother sublty giving him death glares, he had no other choice but to sit in the dreaded seat. The girl seated beside him greeted him with a smile that tore his heart because this would probably be the last time that he could see it. He stiffly returned the smile and hoped that no one noticed his odd behavior.

Their parents started conversing and Luhan really wanted to join them to distract his mind from certain things, or to be more exact, from the girl beside him. But the sight of her drew him towards her, so much that he couldn’t help but stare.

Maybe a part of him knew that this was the last time he could see her. After this arrangement was to be called off, there was no longer a reason for him to meet her. Maybe knowing that made him want to stare at her, to etch her face as much as he could into his memory. He still wanted to see her, even when his heart was aching and he knew that the pain would worsen when he was alone once more. Even when he knew that he will curse himself later for making the pain worse. He continued to stare at her.

What could a useless man like him do in front of a such a fascinating woman like her? Nothing. So he just sat there, lovestruck, and let himself memorize every little detail about her: the strands of her hair that kept falling on her shoulder, her small and round ears, her pink lips that looks so enthralling. Everything.

“Do I have something on my face?” she asked with that melodious voice of hers, interrupting him from his current mental state.

He just shook his head, not trusting his voice to come out. She chuckled. “Thanks for accompanying me yesterday by the way,” she said. “My parents wouldn’t stop nagging me about it. I hope your mom didn’t get angry at you,” She whispered, forcing Luhan to lean closer to her so he could hear what she said.

Despite the wrecked condition of his heart, he couldn’t help but smile. This girl always found a way to warmed his heart whatever his condition was.

“No, she didn’t,” he said, and it was partly true. Angry was an understatement of the year. Pure lividness was more along the lines of what he saw last night. He was lucky his mom didn’t follow through her threat.

Cheonsa looked relieved and mouthed something that Luhan couldn’t catch. He leaned in further and quietly asked her to repeat what she had said.

“Thank you,” she breathed, barely audible, “For letting me call this arrangement off.” She smiled.

Luhan caught his breath.

It was her smile that ruined him. She smiled a lot, but that smile she gave him at that moment was the most beautiful one. He could see the sincere look on her face when she told him how thankful she way. The twinkle in her eyes changed everything.

When he looked at her, he knew. He couldn’t survive without her. No. He wouldn’t. He needed her more that he needed anything else in this world. He wasn’t strong enough to refuse the most perfect girl in front of him.

Luhan had always thought that he was a weak man. But he had never felt so weak in his whole life. She was conquering him and had him all wrapped around her delicate finger. He wasn’t strong enough to run away and hide. No. He was walking towards her. Even if he knew that it would be the end of him, he couldn’t stop from getting closer to her.

Cheonsa cleared and caught everyone's attention. “I have something to say,” she said. She took a deep breath to encourage herself. Luhan saw that her eyebrows were bit furrowed--maybe imagining her parents' wrath that she has to face later, he thought bitterly.

“Concerning this marriage arrangement, I decided to—”

“I agree to marry your daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Han,” Luhan said all of a sudden.

His mother and her parents gasped and let out cheerful laughter. He smiled at them but refused to look at the surprised expression from the girl in front of him.

“Thank you Luhan. I always knew that you would be a perfect husband to my little Cheonsa,” Mrs. Han said with teary eyes. Mr. Han nodded to his wife's words, agreeing with her.

Luhan's mother laughed it off. “Stop that. Luhan was lucky enough to get such a lovely girl like Cheonsa.”

“You have to call us 'Mother' and 'Father' from now on, alright?” Mrs. Han cheerfully said.

“Yes, Mo—“ this time Cheonsa interrupted him by quickly getting up from her seat, her chair squeaking as it dragged across the floor.

“I need to go to the toilet,” she said rather coldly with a chilly gaze.

When she had left, Luhan's mom nudged him to follow her. “Accompany her. It is not good to leave a lady alone by herself," she said. Luhan excused himself and followed after her.

Instead of heading to the restroom, Cheonsa stepped out to the restaurant’s backyard instead. She stopped and stood with her back towards him. He knew better not to talk and just stay with his mouth closed, waiting for her to break the silence. After awhile, she finally turned around and faced him. His heart broke a little when he saw a trace of tears that started to form in her eyes.

“What did you do?” she whispered brokenly.

“Why did you break our promise?” she said, louder this time. Luhan could see the anger that forming in her eyes. But that was better, he preferred to see her angry expression instead of her tears..

“Are you crazy? What you just did ruined everything!” she said half screaming but stopped herself; Luhan knew that she didn't want their parents to hear.

“Now they won’t listen to me even when I don’t want this damned marriage!” Luhan flinched when she cursed.

“And..I...” she trailed off and blinked a few times, trying to hold the tears that her eyes couldn’t hold. However, she failed, and few of her tears started to trail down her cheeks.

Her sadness pained him more than he had thought. It was worse than when he was involved in a car accident that broke his left leg. This kind of pain suffocated him. He concentrated on breathing, but it was difficult to do when it felt like there was a knife lodged in his lung, making every breath that he took twist his face in agony.

“Did you know?” she asked, looking up at him with her watery eyes.

“I have someone I love.”

And Luhan wondered how much more could his heart could endure before it was crushed when he heard those words.

Author’s Note:

I won’t update more for this week. But I guess this is enough. Actually this was a chapter, but because this was too long (3.3k!!), I had to split it into two. I know it’s not that much, but for me who never wrote more than 1.7 k, it was a lot. So I cut it and here it is.

Enjoy the double update.

Chapter 19: New reader here! Luhan is too kind and sweet. I'm not really fond with his changes, but however a part of me glad that he could show his emotions insted of hiding it. I don't know, I'd be lost if I'm to be in his shoe.

Chapter 19: I guess the reason why Cheonsa wont fall in love with Luhan is because of what happened during their first meeting. I know they were children but first impressions last i suppose. And i agree with Sehun that unreachable love is being stupid and most of all useless. One sided love affair after all makes the genius a nincompoop in everyway....
