An Unsaid, "I'm Sorry"
Trapped In A Forever“Han Yoon Hee. Can I ask you something?”
“Yoon Hee is listening.”
“When are you planning to get married?”
She nearly chokes on her tea. You sip from your cup slowly as you watch her struggle to reach for a napkin.
Should you tell her now? The words bounce on the tip of your tongue.
I so sorry, Yoon Hee. I know you have feelings him, but I can’t help it. What am I supposed to do? I’m sorry.
“Are you joking?”
You shake your head with a solemn look.
She picks up her hot drink again and attempts to settle back into her chair. “Not tomorrow, that’s for sure.”
“That’s very reassuring, thank you.”
“Why do you ask?”
You tip your head at her with a sigh.
“Your grandfather,” she gasps and you nod. “No. This time it’s for real?”
You set your cup on the table beside you, knowing you’ll knock it over if you don’t get it out of the way. “Yoon Hee,” you groan desperately. “I don’t want to. I don’t want this. I don’t even know who he is.”
“That’s terrible.”
“What should I do?”
Yoon Hee gets up from her chair and comes to kneel beside yours. “I think it’s time that you told him,” she says. “You can’t draw this out any longer. Tell your grandfather you don’t want to get married yet. Tell him that you want to find love for yourself.”
You bite your tongue before you say something you might regret.
“I…I will. Tomorrow.”
“Today.” She squeezes your forearm with a smile. “It’s not as easy as it sounds, is it?”
It’s moments like these that truly make you value Yoon Hee as a friend. She speaks as if from experience, instead of reason, and you thank her for that. She’s the mother that you’ve missed your entire life when she agrees to sit down and hear about your grievances. It’s heartening to know she possesses the intellect you lack in desperate times. You know she’ll listen to whatever you have to say, but you can’t bear to put this friendship into jeopardy.
You just wish that you could give her something in return.
She smiles at you again and you’re reminded of her confession that rainy day in the music room. Her words resound in your mind and your heart sinks a little lower.
Yoon Hee, I’m sorry.
You return her friendliness with a weak grin, and try to forget about Tao for the time being.
