Minyoung scampered across the deserted streets, glancing both ways before ducking into a sagging doorway. Like everywhere else in the city, the building was abandoned and on the verge of collapsing. The interior of the building was plain and empty. Some others must have been here before her and scavenged what they could, she realized bitterly. No matter, they hadn't moved the bed and what Minyoung needed the most right now was sleep. Without a second though, she carefully closed and locked the door, waiting for the small click before tiptoeing down the hallway and into a large room. The mattress was stained and the pillows were missing but Minyoung sank into the bed and fell asleep immediately.
She couldn't really tell if her dreams were better than reality. Her dreams were filled with gore and death; the pits filled with victims and the zombies. The half dead, mutated creatures which had taken over the city, and perhaps the world. News hadn't reached the small city in weeks and by now half the population was dead, and the rest were either in hiding or traitors; helping the zombies round up the survivors. The whole city smelled dank and reeked of death and decay and the electricity had been cut off a while ago. Food was scarce and nobody stayed in one place for long for fear of the half dead creatures.
Minyoung's dream was similar. Everything was dark and dirty and she could vaguely see the shadows of the zombies. Ugly creatures with lifeless eyes, rotting skin and sometimes bones jutting out from ghastly pale, sickly skin. You could smell them from meters away, the smell of decay and rotting flesh and when they came you could hear it, the squelching of dead skin pounding on the cracked concrete, slushing around with the blood of their earlier victims. Minyoung wasn't sure if it was lucky she was alive or if she was better off dead. She had found a mirror in her dream but when she looked, the reflection didn't seem to be her. Her once flowing black hair was now short and grimy and her face was caked with dust. Her eyes seemed hollow and she had grown thinner and thinner. But she could still see the tint in her cheeks that differentiated her from the creatures.
When she woke up a few hours later, she was still on the dirtied mattress, but this time there was someone next to her. The room was dark and shadowed but she could make out the small silhouette. The figure was breathing in deeply and letting out their breaths in small snorts and she cautiously reached over to pet the figure. With a surprised snort, the stranger jumped up and yelped.
Suddenly, there was a beam of light focused on Minyoung's face. Where the stranger had found a flashlight and working batteries, she had no idea but she took comfort in the small gleam, even if it was directed at her face.
Squinting through the bright light, Minyoung took a quick glance at the stranger. It seemed to be a boy, around her age with bright eyes and lips pulled back into a small snarl.
"What do you want," she snarled back, hoping that her tattered clothes and grimy hair would help intimidate the boy.
"Are you alive or dead," the boy snarled back, waving the flashlight around in front of him in defense. Minyoung winced as the bright light flashed before her again.
"Alive," she hissed back, "But neither of us will be for long if you keep up this racket."
He immediately quieted and bowed his head in apology. "I'm sorry if I intruded into your home," he whispered quietly. "I needed a place to hide quickly and I must have fallen asleep."
"It's alright," Minyoung mumbled back, smiling shyly at the boy. "My name is Minyoung and you are the first human I've seen in a while." She slid back down onto the mattress, grimacing as she saw the dried stains.
"Baekhyun," the boy introduced before sitting down himself. "I guess we're one of the lucky ones."
"If you call hiding and scavenging and trying not to die, lucky, then yes I suppose we are lucky," Minyoung joked dryly. Baekhyun chuckled in response and the two fell into a comfortable silence.
"I have a nice place set up," Baekhyun said after a long period of silence and the sun was starting to rise from outside the window. The horizon sat blankly facing them, silhouetting the remains of buildings and graves. "I made myself a little shelter, but it'll fit two." He chuckled quietly as he waved the flashlight around. "I could use the company. I've started talking to Fifa the Flashlight a few days ago."
Minyoung couldn't help but giggle. "You know you're going crazy when you start talking to inanimate objects," she quipped before nodding. "I'd be so grateful to come with you."
Baekhyun grinned back and Minyoung noticed how bright his smile was. His shirt was in pieces, his what must have been blonde hair was greasy and there were dirt smudges all over his face but he was undeniably good looking.
Minyoung grimaced as she stepped out from under the sagging doorway and out into the deserted city, breathing in the dead air. Somewhere in the distance she could hear the screams of another innocent victim and the cruel gasping cackles of the creatures.
The future seemed so dark and desolate. But at least this time, she had Baekhyun at her side.
