Broken Slippers

Note: Story is in Yuri’s POV

I never knew it would lead to this, but it did.

Let me take you a few months back.

I was in a hurry to go out, since my friends had already been waiting 15 minutes for me. I scrambled to grab my things and yelled at my housemate Sica to borrow her slippers ‘cause I couldn’t find mine.

I went to the mall and all was well. After our short trip, we went home. On my way back to our dormitory, I accidentally tripped and broke her slippers. I panicked and tried to fix it, but I ended up breaking it even further.

I anxiously entered the room only to find all the girls asleep. I had to deal with this tomorrow then. Knowing Sica, she won’t let this go that easily.

Morning came and so did the long awaited confession.

I waited an hour after she woke up hoping to get her mood up. Telling her while she was still half-asleep would’ve given me my death sentence. And so it went this way:

“Sica-ssi, I have something to tell you.”

She eyed me suspiciously. Of course she would, no one used honorifics among us.

“I am so sorry. I’ll do anything to make it up to you.” Her eyebrows were raised further.

“I accidentally broke your slippers.” I told her with my eyes downcast and a guilty look painted on my face. Crossing my fingers this’ll work. Please let it work. Please.

Then, her response came.

“Yah! Kwon Yuri! You should’ve taken better care of it.” She shouted as I stepped a little farther away from her.

She then stood up and moved towards me aiming for my ears. I thought she was going to pinch them so I ran away as fast as I could. We ended up running all around the house till Tiffany stepped in and told us off for making a ruckus. She berated us ‘cause her baby Sooyoung might wake up, then she demanded that we settle our situation like adults. So Sica and I returned to the dining table to talk things out.

“Well, since you broke it. You have to buy me a new one. Take me to the mall now.”

“Okay.” I immediately grabbed the opportunity lest she changes her mind.

“Wait, I don’t have anything to wear though.”

“You have clothes on.”

“I meant footwear. I only brought those with me. Krystal still hadn’t brought my other stuff here.”

“So?”

“So, you either have to carry me all the way to the mall or you enlist someone’s help to do that.”

“What?! Are you out of your mind Sica?”

“No. Those are my terms. Take it or leave it. By the way, I only allow girls to carry me.”

“Fine” Yuri muttered in exasperation.

She then called her friend Yoona. Yoona was a member of the powerlifting varsity team in school, so she’d have no trouble carrying Jessica. Plus, she was very easy to bribe. Food was always one of her weaknesses. Ten minutes after the call, their doorbell rang.

“So, where’s that person I have to carry?” Yoona immediately asked. Yuri simply pointed to their living room where Jessica was currently watching TV.

Yoona suddenly bent down and waited for the girl to climb up.

Jessica was bewildered.

“Kwon Yuri, are you kidding me? Are you expecting me to climb on this scrawny girl’s back all the way to the mall?”

“Hey, that’s insulting. I’m not carrying you then.”

Yoona was a few steps to the door when Yuri suddenly said: “Wait, make it two weeks. Just, don’t leave.”

Yoona hesitantly turned and stood beside Yuri. “How do you expect me to carry her if she doesn’t want to?”

“Leave it to me. I’ll fix this.” Yuri firmly said. “Jessica, Yoona is very much capable of carrying  you. She’s a member of the powerlifting team and you are safe in her hands.”

“Okay, fine.” Jessica turned her attention to Yoona. “You better make sure I don’t fall off.”

Yoona made a mock salute. “Yes ma’am.” She then directed her back to Jessica as Jessica slowly climbed on.

“Stay still.” Yoona said as Jessica kept on adjusting herself. When Jessica finally settled on her position, they all looked relieved.

“Looks like we’re all set.” Yoona cheerfully announced.

Yuri made her way to the car as Yoona followed behind.

Both Yuri and Jessica were amazed at how Yoona had carried Jessica as if she was as light as a feather. Yuri stopped in her tracks to stare at them.

“What?” Yoona asked.

“Nothing”

The drive to the mall was eerily quiet as Yuri drove the car with Yoona on the front seat and Jessica on the back seat. There was no conversation and there wasn’t any other sound aside from Yoona humming random songs. Jessica was asleep and Yuri simply focused on the road.

When they arrived, Yoona went to the backseat to wake Jessica.

“Hey, hey. Wake up, sunshine.” Yoona said as she shook Jessica awake.

The girl slowly stood up and hit her head on the car roof.

“Aww!”

“Oh, you need to be more careful.” Yoona advised as she slowly caressed Jessica’s head. I don’t know what went into Jessica’s mind that she suddenly jumped on Yoona.

“Hey, do you really want me to carry you this way? This’ll be difficult.”

Yoona couldn’t see it, but Yuri could. Jessica’s cheeks were crimson red and she was trying to hide it from Yoona. That’s probably why she ended up jumping on her. Anyway, back to the scene.

Yoona told Jessica that she was going to carry her bridal style if she didn’t want a piggy back. Jessica kept on shaking her head so Yoona took her back to the car, so she could give her a piggy back.

They entered the boutique and Yoona was about to place Jessica on a chair.

“Wait. I haven’t chosen what I want yet.”

Yoona then carried her all around the boutique as Yuri patiently waited on the chair.

When Yoona and Sica returned, they had about five pairs of slippers on hand. Yuri eyed Jessica incredulously.

“Relax Yul. I’m only choosing one.”

Jessica fit the slippers and asked the personnel to get her the right size.

As the personnel came with the proper sized slippers, Yoona helped Sica on putting them on.

“Sheesh, Yoona, that isn’t part of your job you know. And Jessica, Yoona doesn’t have to help you. Those are slippers for God’s sake, you just have to slip them on.”

Jessica gave Yuri a you-should-just-shut-up look and Yoona just continued what she had been doing. Something was certainly up.

After paying for the slippers at the counter, they returned to the parking lot. Yoona and Jessica were noticeably friendlier to each other. Jessica’s grip on Yoona wasn’t as awkward as before and Yoona was walking with a spring in her step. Uh-oh, I know where this is going.

This time, on their way home, Yoona sat beside Jessica and Yuri was left alone. This made her look like a driver for the two, but she didn’t mind. She was just glad this was all over with and Hellsica wasn’t able to make an appearance.

They went out the car and Jessica finally walked to the door.

“Hey, I just realized something.” Yuri voiced out. “You actually didn’t have to carry her back to the car. She already had the slippers then! Ha!”

“It wasn’t opened yet.” Jessica defended.

“Don’t worry, it was my pleasure.” Yoona grinned as she winked at Jessica.

As Yuri and Jessica entered the door, Yuri wondered aloud, “Wait, why aren’t you leaving yet, Yoona?”

“Duh, Yuri. Dinner remember? I get free dinners for two weeks.” Yoona knocked on Yuri’s forehead.

“Right, right. No need to get violent.”

Well, two weeks of dinner didn’t help either. This brought Jessica more chances to talk to Yoona and voila, I bring you back to the present.

I just entered the house to find Yoona and Jessica cuddling on the couch while watching a drama. It was something called Wild Romance. Ugh. Whatever. You obviously know what led to them.

It was the story of the broken slippers. The slippers that I didn’t mean to break, but I did anyway, along with my heart.
