Chapter Three

“What’s going on? Who are these guys?” Yoona questioned Taecyeon as she began to step closer to him.

“Don’t worry about it,” Taec snapped at her. “You seriously shouldn’t have followed me. This isn’t a place for little girls to be hanging around.”

“I just followed you to get ajumma’s purse back! Why are you stealing in the first place?!” Yoona replied offended by his comment. “And who are you calling ‘little girl’?!”

“Aish. You’re such a burden.” Taec annoyingly stated.

His eyes swiftly scanned the perimeter as the men drew nearer. He spotted a door and grabbed Yoona by the arm and immediately dragged her towards it.

“Yah! What are you doing?! You’re hurting me!” Yoona stated in a fit of resistance against his hold. “Where are you taking me!”

Taecyeon quickly opened the metal door, handed Yoona the stolen purse, and shoved her into building.

“Return that to ajumma for me,” Taec said as he shut the door and latched it with a metal bar that he found lying on the ground nearby.

“Let me out, you jerk!” Yoona shouted as she pushed on the door. “This isn’t funny! Open the door!”

Even with the excessive shaking of the handle and repeated body slams, Yoona’s strength seemed like nothing against the metal door. It would not budge open. After about five minutes of futile effort, Yoona gave up on the door. She decided to see if she could figure out what was going on; she leaned up against the door trying her best to eavesdrop.

The sounds were hard to make out, but Yoona could somewhat hear a man’s voice say, “You idiot! The boss won’t be happy when he hears about what you’ve done! You’re gonna get us into so much sh*t!”

It went quiet for a moment. She then heard a man yell in pain. Could it have been Taec? She abruptly became alert again and decided to look for another means of getting out. There had to be more than one exit. Yoona began to explore the poorly lit halls when she came upon another door. With a tilt of the handle, the doors opened into a noisy area. It was a salon filled with a number of people having their hair tended to as they gossiped with one another. Silence swiftly filled the room because everyone in the salon was startled by Yoona’s sudden emergence.

“What are you doing back there?!” shouted one of the hair stylist. “That’s for employees use only!”

“I’m so sorry. I was only looking for a way out.” Yoona replied.

“You kids need to stop messing around!” said a woman who was having her hair worked on by the hairstylist. “This isn’t a place to fool around.”

“I apologize.” Yoona said as she bowed repeatedly to everyone in the salon. “It won’t happen again.”

As Yoona was making her exit, she could hear some of the ladies complain about today’s youth and how they’re all a bunch of delinquents. She quickly made her way back onto the streets and let out a sigh of relief. She couldn’t help but feel bothered by the fact that she was grouped in with those delinquents. She had always been a good student and a filial daughter. Here she was trying to help out a victim and all she was getting from it was the label of a delinquent. As she continued her disheartened stagger, she suddenly remembered Taecyeon and ran back to the alleyway. Unfortunately no one was there, not even Taec. Although this left her perplexed, she remembered that he had asked her to return the lady’s purse. Yoona also found this odd. Why would someone steal from a person and then just return it? She headed back to the location where Taec had stolen the woman’s purse. There was still a small crowd; some of them were still trying to calm the woman down about the robbery. Yoona shuffled her way through the crowd to the front where the woman was sitting on the curb of the sidewalk. Yoona knelt down next to her and placed the purse in front of her.

“I hope you’re not too distressed,” Yoona said as she patted her back to comfort her.

“Oh my gosh! Thank you so much!” The woman gratefully replied as she hugged Yoona. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you!”

“Oh, it’s okay. I was just doing my part,” Yoona stated.

“No. You’ve done more than that. We need more young’ns like you,” said a man in the crowd. “You should be proud of yourself.”

“Let’s all cheer for her,” stated another voice from the crowd.

The crowd in unison began to clap and shout, “HORRAY!”

“Oh no, it really was nothing,” Yoona replied embarrassed from all the attention.

Although she liked the attention she got, she couldn’t help but feel guilty. She really didn’t do anything. Taec had given her the purse to return to the woman. Even if he was the one who stole from the lady, he still had the conscience to return it to her. It didn’t really make sense to her, but she still felt that she was getting credit for nothing.

Nickhun quickly finished up filing the rest of the patient outcards that were delegated to him. He decided to get some fresh air during his break. He sat down on a bench outside the hospital and just peacefully watched everything that went on around him. He couldn’t help but smile as he watched a couple try to calm their crying baby. On the other side of the garden he could see the smiling face of an elder as she was being pushed around in her wheelchair by a younger girl. It was such a nice afternoon. Out of the corner of Nickhun’s eyes, he saw someone sit down at the other end of the marbled bench in which he resided. He curiously turned to see who it was. It was a young woman approximately Yoona’s age. She was quite pretty, but what caught Nick’s attention was the way she sternly stared out into the garden in front of her. Nickhun decided to initiate small talk to help fill the awkward void, but before he could the girl spoke; she could sense him staring at her.

“Is it okay if I sit here?” she shyly asked him.

“Sure. I don’t own it.” Nick replied with a laugh.

“Okay. Thanks.” The girl said as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. It became silent for a few minutes as the girl and Nickhun just sat and stared out to the garden in front of them.

“The weather’s nice, isn’t it?” Nick asked hoping that it didn’t add to the awkward silence.

“Yeah, I guess,” stated the girl.

“I mean, you still have the summer’s sun with a touch of winter’s breeze,” He stated. “The cold isn’t too harsh, yet.”

“True, but I think it’s a bit chilly.”

Being the gentlemen he was, Nick asked, “Hmm, would you like my jacket?”

“Oh, no. I’m fine. I partially like it.”

“Are you sure? You wouldn’t want to get sick, you know. But then again, we are right outside the hospital, so no worries,” Nick let out an uneasy chuckle.

“I wish it would be a little colder, that way I could feel numb.”

Her reply caught him off guard. It wasn’t necessarily what she said, but the tone she had when she said it. He earnestly
stated, “Why would you want to feel numb. Are you unhappy about something?”

“I can’t say that I’m unhappy because it’s more of a disappointment. As I sit here and watch the autumn leaves float around, I can’t help but be envious of them.” The girl’s answer was filled with sincerity. “Oh, how I long to be like them, free to float with the careless whispers of the wind, no burdens to weigh it down.”

The way she went about answering his question was so perceptive. Her presence intrigued Nick, but now he didn’t know how to respond. He had anticipated a much simpler answer.

“So are you visiting someone?” Nickhun managed to utter in the midst of his awe.

“You could say that,” she replied with a modest smile as she got up to leave. “I have to go now. Maybe I’ll see you around.”

“I also have to get back to work. It was nice meeting you. See you around,” stated Nick as he parted ways with the stranger. It made him think about a quote he learned from his mother, “Consider these two quotations, ‘Never speak to strangers’ and ‘A stranger is just a friend I’ve yet to meet.’ Which is more beautiful? Which is used more often?” He had always liked the latter of the two.
