Barking up the wrong tree

Hey! I Want You Back!

“Oppa, where do you want to eat?” you asked Luhan. You had been walking around in circles for some time now. You were wearing heels, and your feet were starting to hurt.

“Mmmm. I can’t decide. I don’t know what to eat,” he chewed on his bottom lip while looking around.

“Oppa! My feet are hurting already! Don’t think hard about it. Just choose whatever comes to your mind first,” you whined at him. He looked as if he just violated a law and then hurried to crouch down in front of you.

“What are you doing?!” you asked him incredulously.

“Well, you said your feet are hurting. Oppa will carry you. I don’t want my little _____ hurting her precious feet.”

“Aish.”

You pushed him away, causing him to stumble forward.

“Oi! What did you do that for? I’m your oppa!”

“Then act like it! Tch. You’re embarrassing me. Let’s just have western food. I know a good place that serves it best.”

You started walking away, and he hurried after you. When he reached you, he took your hand and intertwined it with him. You raised your lower arm to look at your clasped hands, and raised your brow at him.

“Really?! Oppa, you’re so clingy! How will I be able to attract guys when you’re like a leech sticking close to me?”

He flicked your forehead with his free hand. You tried to pull your hand from him to touch your stinging forehead, but he still refused to let it go.

“Don’t think about guys yet, _____. You’re too young to be exposed to such horrors,” he seriously said to you.

“I’m 20 years old!”

He glared at you. “That’s too young.”

You whimpered and looked up in the sky. “God, please give him a girlfriend now… Please…”

He just laughed and shook his head at your antics.

You both reached the restaurant where Lay used to bring you.

As you got inside, Luhan turned to face you. “Are you sure you want to eat here?”

“Yes, I do. I thought you’re hungry,” you looked at him playfully, “For a hungry person, you sure are indecisive.”

He pouted and turned to the usherette, “A table for two please.”

You were then directed towards the only available table.

As the two of you were heading towards it, you heard a female voice call your brother.

“Luhan?”

Luhan’s back was covering your vision which was why you couldn’t see the woman.

Luhan looked over to the direction of the voice and gasped, suddenly stopping in his tracks to get a better look of the owner of the voice.

“Mei Hua?" he widely smiled, "Is that you?”

Suddenly, he pulled you to the direction of that Mei Hua person.

“Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while! It’s good to see you here. You look better than the last time I saw you,” he smiled again, “Is he your boyfriend?”

You went beside Luhan since your position behind him was making your arms uncomfortable. You saw the woman smile brightly, and pulled the guy with her closer. As your eyes shifted from Mei Hua to her apparent boyfriend, you felt your jaw drop and the blood drained from your face.

“Yes, he’s my boyfriend,” Mei Hua then leaned in to kiss the equally shocked Lay on the cheek.

If you were shocked to see Lay with another woman, Lay was shocked because Mei Hua stated that he was her boyfriend right in front of you. Which the last time he checked, he was not. Lay avoided your gaze. He couldn’t help but feel like he was cheating on you, even though you were no longer together, and you seemed to be over him.

He didn’t want to know how you were reacting right now. He might hate Mei Hua if he did.

“Wow. You guys look good together. I’m Luhan. Nice to meet you...?” Luhan offered his free hand.

“Lay,” he reached out to shake his hand.

Luhan smiled. “Oh. And by the way, this pretty little thing right here is _____.” Luhan turned to look at you, squeezed your hand, and leaned in to kiss you on the head.

The two didn’t have to ask as to who she was. If there was a room for doubt earlier about you two being in a relationship, it disappeared right after Luhan’s actions.

“I think we’re disturbing your date enough. Well, it’s nice to meet you here again, Mei Hua.”

Luhan turned to leave but Mei Hua stopped him. “Wait! If it won’t bother you two that much, would you like to sit with us?” she asked them, motioning to the two unoccupied seats.

“No, it’s okay we wouldn’t want to impose---“ Luhan said but was once again cut off by Mei Hua.

“I insist.”

Looking at his former girlfriend, he debated for a few seconds if it was worth to fuss about such a small thing. He was hungry anyway. And so, Luhan decided to humor her. “Well, if you insist…” He let go of your hand, went around to one of the chair and pulled it for you.

“Sit, my angel,” he said, sending you a smile.

You hurriedly tried to cover up your shock, before your brother could notice that something was wrong. You took the seat offered by Luhan, which was just directly in front of your ex-boyfriend; while Luhan took the seat next to you, sitting in front of Mei Hua.

The atmosphere turned awkward.

You looked in front of you to see Mei Hua and Lay trying to share subtle whispers; which was obviously failing, since you’ve noticed.

You decided to do the same with Luhan.

“Oppa, how do you know this woman?”

He gave you a small smile. “I used to date her before I left. So that’s two years ago.”

Your eyes widened and you turned to look at the said girl. You thought that you were doing too much eye widening now, that maybe it should try to stay that way throughout the night. This was officially the most eventful day you’ve ever had!

If you were having the shock of your life a while ago, you were having an out-of-body experience now. This was so surreal! There you were about to have dinner with your ex-boyfriend of five days with his new girlfriend, who was the ex-girlfriend of your brother, who didn’t even know you used to date the current boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend...

Wow! This is like an excerpt from a movie!

Meanwhile, on the other side…

“Boyfriend?! Are you insane?!” Lay whispered bitingly.

“Hey, take a chill pill, lover boy! We’re at the same table. This is the best way to exact revenge on our exes… keep them close and strike when they don’t expect it.”

“What?! What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t say I want in on your revenge!”

“Listen here, Lay. I saw the way she looked at you earlier. I can tell that she’s troubled. You know what it means? It means she’s affected. She still likes you. A chance just opened now, Lay. And you better damn as well take it.”

Mei Hua then turned her attention back in front of them to see Luhan gesturing for a waiter to come and take their order.

Lay was surprised. Mei Hua had been single for two years now. Two years had passed and she was still affected over this Luhan guy. She must have gotten it pretty bad.

Lay was overwhelmed with too many emotions that he didn’t know what to feel anymore.

He was mad at Mei Hua for putting him in this position, for being forced to lie in front of the woman he loved...

He was angry at the guy who held your hand, called you his angel, and who was smugly sitting beside you when he couldn’t… he no longer could.

And … he was upset.

It took you only five days at most to get over him and see another guy. Was he that unimportant to you?

But then again, he couldn’t help but feel happy. He was happy to see you again. Your beautiful face, your long wavy hair, your eyes, and your lips… They were the ones that were haunting him every night. It was tearing him apart to know that you were no longer in his life.

Such a bittersweet moment...

Luhan turned to you when the waiter came. “You don’t feel like having steak right now…” he wasn't asking you, merely stating, but you nodded nonetheless.

“So, if you’re not having steak…” he looked through the menu, “… it would be coconut shrimp stack, then.”

You were a bit surprised when he said what was on your mind. But then, this was Luhan you were talking about. Your Luhan oppa who knew you so well.

Your eyes sparkled and you smiled at him, forgetting the previous tense atmosphere. “You seem so sure.”

He leaned close to you and pinched you on both cheeks. “Of course I would, you’re my dearest ______,” he gave you an angelic smile and ruffled your hair.

The display of affection apparently annoyed Mei Hua and angered Lay even more. He clenched his fist and forced himself to calm before he could hit the girly face of Luhan. Seriously… what guy does that? Seeing him act cute around you was making him sick.

Mei Hua then cleared and pointed to the direction of the waiter, who was waiting for their orders.

Luhan finally turned his attention to the waiter and ordered food for the two of you; and Mei Hua instructed the waiter to deliver their food the same time as the added orders.

The silence crept in again when the waiter left your table.

To break the ice, Luhan decided to engage Mei Hua in a conversation. All the while, you and Lay kept quiet.

You got your phone out and decided to answer the IQ test app just to pass time.

After a while, you stopped resisting the urge to look at Lay.

You turned your head to look at him when he shifted his gaze away from you. You caught him looking at you, and he still avoided your gaze.

‘What? Are you unhappy? You’re the one who broke up with him.’ You mentally sighed. You knew that you were the one responsible for your break-up, so you had no right to complain.

'What's wrong if he’s seeing another woman? It’s only natural for him to move on. Didn’t you tell him yourself that it won’t be difficult for him to find a better woman? Didn’t you pray for it?'

You turned to look at Mei Hua.

‘Yes, I told him he’ll find someone better. But does he have to take it literally?’ The girl looked taller and prettier than you. The girl had even more bust than you. You pitifully looked at yours.

'Oh bugger.'

You had never been more insecure in your life. There was nothing more awful than being compared to the current girlfriend of your ex-boyfriend.

‘And does he have to bring Mei Hua here?’ you got annoyed then. This was your place! This was where you often go when you went out on a date! There were countless restaurants here. He should’ve brought her somewhere else! It was almost like he was disrespecting your past.

You were pulled out of your reverie when the food came.  You droned out their voices and focused on eating your food.

You were enjoying the golden brown jumbo prawns rolled in coconut batter, when you felt Luhan tap you on the shoulder. Your body turned to face him on reflex, and you got poked on the cheek with his index finger.

“My baby is so serious.” He then brought his fork, with a slice of steak, near your mouth, “I know you originally wanted this.”

You leaned close to the fork, and ate the steak.

“So how long have you been dating?” Luhan asked Lay and Mei Hua.

“Oh. Just recently…. Four of five days ago?” Mei Hua answered.

At her casual declaration, you choked on the food you were meant to swallow. Grabbing the napkin in front of you on refllex, you violently coughed out the unfortunate piece of meat.

“Hey, are you alright?” Luhan handed you a glass of water and you hurriedly drank from it, wanting to soothe the sudden pain in your throat.

‘WHAT THE ****! Either the same night we broke up or the day after?! REALLY?! After all the dramatic exchange between us, he could replace me easily?! WHAT AN ACTOR!‘  You sent a hateful glare to Lay which he caught. You didn't even care if your oppa could see it.

You couldn’t help it. You didn’t care whether you have the right to get mad or not; you just knew that you had to be mad!

His eyes widened from the hate glare he was receiving from you; and he was suddenly feeling the urge to stuff all the food in Mei Hua’s mouth to stop her from speaking any more nonsense! She was making things difficult for him!

He then felt a cloth being softly dabbed near his mouth, and turned to see Mei Hua looking at him with fake adoration.

“Jagiya, you’re such a messy eater.”

You could feel your anger escalating. Lay was NEVER a messy eater. You didn’t even see any food stain on his face! Of course, you would know since you were sending him a glare. Not because you were hoping to get a glimpse of his dimples….weren't you?

You excused yourself from the table and went to the powder room for a breather.

Luckily for you, Luhan didn't seem to notice the negative vibes coming from you. He was oblivious to the internal conflict between the three of his companions. And so, as you left the table, he gave a dreamy sigh while following you with his eyes.

But then, he began to notice another pair of eyes lingering on his dongsaeng; something that was not biding well with the protective oppa...

“My _____ is so pretty, isn't she? Guys just won’t stop staring…” he turned to Lay who was currently looking at your retreating body, and his eyes narrowed. “If they want to keep their eyes, I advise that they stop looking at her,” Luhan’s voice suddenly dropped dangerously low, but Lay bravely met Luhan’s threatening eyes.

“…Girlfriends get jealous easily, you know?” Luhan smirked and motioned his eyes to Mei Hua, before returning on Lay’s.

Of course, Lay wouldn't be threatened with the Mei Hua excuse ... they weren't really together. But Luhan didn't know that... And so, Mei Hua was starting to worry. None of the boys would be so patient with the other. She knew of Luhan’s aggressive tendencies. Contrary to his image, he used to be in a lot of fights when he was younger. His temper wasn't something to be messed with. And Luhan seemed to be quite taken with you. He never acted that fond nor protective of Mei Hua when they were still together. You seemed to be very special to him.

Thinking that Lay got the message, Luhan thankfully broke the stare and just resumed eating his food.

You returned to the table and noticed a stronger tension surrounding them.

You looked at each of them, before continuing eating your food unsurely.

Lay cleared his throat and finally asked the question he had been itching to ask all night. “So how about you? How long have you two been together?” Lay threw the question directly at Luhan.

There was a moment of silence.

Luhan was trying to keep a straight face, despite the fact that the corners of his mouth were twitching.

You were shocked with Lay’s question.

'That’s right. They were never introduced. I’ve never even shown a picture of Luhan to Lay.'

You turned to look at Luhan and he did the same towards you.

Luhan then laughed out loud. “What are you saying?” he squeezed in between laughter as he eyed Lay.

He then hugged you tight and kissed you on the cheek.  “See, baby girl? Oppa must be loving you right."

Sending the confused Lay a smug smile, “This goddess right here is my dongsaeng. My blood-related dongsaeng.”
