Hardly Impressed

Play My Way [Drabble & One Shot Collection]

DAEBER (DAEHYUN x AMBER)

He paced back and forth in front of his friend who had seated himself comfortably on the bench, eyes following his nervous friend's movements.

"Dude, Daehyun! You've got to calm down. Plus, what's so great about this chick? " he asked as he sat forward in his seat. Before Daehyun could even answer Yongguk, the latter's lips had pulled into a smirk as he raised a brow, making a suggestive comment. "She's probably really good with bananas and nuts, huh?"

Daehyun turned to his friend and kicked him in the shin causing a slew of curse words to spew from the older boy's mouth as he intensely rubbed on the sore spot. "What the hell, man?!"

"Don't talk about her like that!" the younger instructed, glaring down at his friend.

"Well, at least you're not so nervous any more," Yongguk stated. "Hey, it looks like they're closing. Here's your chance!"

The two stared in the direction of the bakery for a moment before Yongguk pushed his friend in that direction. After trying his hardest not to budge, he stumbled a couple of steps into the street before becoming alarmed and quickly turning back around. Yongguk gave him a stern look, making the younger one hesitantly turn to the bakery. He heaved an exasperated sigh before crossing the empty street.

Daehyun approached the girl, his nerves eating away at him. He awkwardly waved at the girl. She looked at him with an expression that made him sick to his stomach. This was not going well.

"Can I help you?" the girl asked with furrowed brows.

"Amber, right?" He paused and waited for her confirmation, though he didn't need to wait. She had a name tag on. It was obvious. Furthermore, he has had a crush on her since she transferred to their school. So knowing her name was not in question. When he saw that she had nodded, he continued.

"Umm, I-, I-, I was wondering..." Daehyun stammered, unable to find the words to compose the question he had planned just moments ago.

"You were wondering?" she repeated his words.

"Umm, I was just wondering what time you guys closed," He spat quickly, mentally beating himself for asking such a ridiculous question.

"Uh, we're closing now."

"Right. I knew that," he replied while rubbing the back of his neck. He took a deep breath, taking in as much courage as he could find. "Actually, what I meant to ask was whether or not you'd be open to going on a date with me."

"Is this a joke?"

Daehyun was a bit thrown off by her response. Why would she think this was a joke? He was serious! His eagar appearance disappeared as swiftly as it had appeared.

"I can see your friend laughing back there," Amber stated as she motioned to Yongguk in the distance. "I know who you guys are. I've seen you at school. Your kind don't date plain janes like me. I'm sure you can go to the mall to find plenty of pretty girls ready to vy for your attention."

He cursed his friend under his breath before looking at the girl. "I'm serious. I've liked you for quite some time now, and I really want to take you out on a date."

Amber narrowed her eyes, skepticism strongly convincing her that this couldn't be real and that she shouldn't believe such words. "Prove it. Do something to show me that you're actually interested in me, and if I'm impressed, I'll go on a date with you."

The next few days came and went with Daehyun trying his best to impress the girl. On the first day, he rolled up to the bakery hoping to impress her with his nice car. Useless. The next day he tried to shower her with gifts which she quickly declined. Futile. After many attempts, he was on the verge of giving up. He honestly did not know what to do. Everything he did seemed too superficial for her and although it would impress any other girl, it did nothing for he girl he liked.

"Why are you trying so hard?" Yongguk complained as he sat on Daehyun's bed, tossing a little ball into the air.

"Well, she said she'd give me a chance if I could prove that I actually liked her and I really do like her. I've watched her for awhile now. And no I am not a stalker. She's really sweet and I love when she smiles. And her laugh, why can't she laugh for me? And she's beautiful and seems so down to earth," Daehyun stated with a sigh. He sat forward at his desk and pensively thinking about what he could do to get her attention. He threw the pencil that he had in his hand on the table and whined. "Why can't she be like other girls?"

"It's obvious you don't want that. She's clearly one of a kind, so shouldn't you stop trying to impress her the way you would any other girl."

Daehyun suddenly had an epiphany. He ran over to the older boy and began showering him with kisses causing Yongguk to throw the younger one off of him.

The next day when Amber was closing up, she saw Daehyun approach her. She couldn't help but smile to herself, though she was slightly disappointed that the boy had failed to impress her these past few days. She knew better than to get her hopes up today.

He was carrying something, but she couldn't tell what it was because he had it hidden behind his back. She looked at him with a raised brow. "You still haven't given up?"

He just grinned and shook his head. "I realized that the past few days, I was trying to impress you, but I didn't really think about you. I know this isn't anything special, but I really do feel that it is something you would enjoy."

Amber tilted her head to the side as she stared at him curiously. He pulled our a box and held it in front of her. "Here, I got you some flours."

He watched as her smile slowly formed on her face. The boy had bought a dozen bags of flour. There was a variety of different types. And Amber couldn't help but be tickled by the gesture. She was honestly impressed. Buying a baker "flowers". Who would have thought of something so simple?

"So, does that mean you're impressed?" Daehyun hesitantly asked.

Amber couldn't respond with words. She was honestly really happy that he actually was attentive to her, that he wasn't just playing with her. She could see that he was genuinely interested. She just nodded eagarly , her eyes arched into crescents and a smile beaming off her face.

"All right, good. Because we're going on the date now!" He declared as he took her by the hand and dragged her to his car. She was dumbfounded for a moment, but happily followed.
