⚕: Taehyung.2019

“As of this moment Doctor Shin will be the lead surgeon and will administer the transplant.” He announced abruptly.

Everyone in the surgery room gasped. Nurse Lee, however seemed to only nod and give him a thumbs up after hearing him ask her so many questions. That was all the approval he needed.

“Where are you going?” Chaeyoung questioned, raising her voice in frustration. “Where are you going!”

Taehyung didn’t answer as he rushed out. He quickly trashed his mask and scrubs, grabbing new ones to change into. He scrubbed his hands and grabbed another mask. He stepped on the pedal activating the door to the first operating room and didn't hesitate before entering.

Director Jung was still struggling to keep the patient stable as he noticed that Professor Min was standing on the side. His face filled with regret and defeat.

“What are you doing!” Taehyung barked angrily towards the older doctor.

“It’s too late. We’re losing him.” The professor sank to ground in defeat.

“What are you doing here?” Director Jung yelled. “You’re insane!”

Taehyung rushed to his side and took over administering CPR, pressing his hands repeatedly against the young man's chest.

“15 ml ketamine now!” Taehyung yelled at the anesthesiologist.

“If the chairman dies!” Director Jung reprimanded him. “Were all dead! You idiot.”

Taehyung ignored him, his entire focus on the patient currently in need of help. “We need to stimulate his heart more.”

Taehyung closed his eyes as he hovered his hand over the wrist. 30 25 20 23 19 He had once come close to saving both patients before in the clinic.

But he had failed, after that incident he had practiced trying to redo the operation a thousand times. He had, at the time, researched for days how he could’ve done things differently. He knew it was crazy, but he had thought of a solution.

“Prepare for open heart surgery.” He ordered.

“Are you insane?” Professor Min questioned. “We just removed his liver.”

“If we stimulate the heart enough, there will be blood circulation again, just enough—"

“Just enough, to create a new blood flow system.” Director Jung continued his thoughts, his tone lifting as they seemed to be on the same page. “We can create an imitation liver.”

Taehyung nodded and locked eyes with the genius surgeon, it started to dawn on them that ultimately they had the same goal. Save the patient.

Taehyung glanced back through the glass, Doctor Shin had already taken control of his surgery. He couldn’t help but feel impressed by her skills, like a proud boyfriend would be.

Even despite his denial, he knew she wasn’t the same Sohee. She was stronger, much stronger than he was.

“Let’s begin.” Taehyung felt confident.

The nurses rushed in with new packets of blood. He had never actually performed this surgery before in the clinic. But if it worked... if it worked, there was a chance they could save this innocent young man.

⚕: Chaeyoung

Chaeyoung watched in horror as he marched out of the room, like an idiot. That idiot! That lunatic! He frustrated her so much.

“You heard him, I’m in charge.” Doctor Shin announced to everyone's shock, her voice completely unshaken.

Within seconds she took over his position, giving orders and skillfully handling his scalpel. Watching her continue, the other nurses also began to return to normal, trusting her completely.

“Prepare the transplant.” Doctor Shin ordered and even the hesitant Doctor Kim brought the liver over.

“We’ll begin reconstruction now.” She announced preparing herself. “String.”

Shin Ryujin. The way she took command, it was graceful and effective.

Even in one surgery, Chaeyoung could tell they were worlds apart. She was a skilled surgeon and Chaeyoung was still a resident. They were a year apart, but it could’ve been 10. Somehow she reminded her of someone. Taehyung.

If… if by some miracle she was Sohee. Then Yoon Taehyung really was in love with someone Chaeyoung could never compare to.

“Doctor Park.” She snapped her out of her thoughts.

Chaeyoung quickly got to work, however she was not used to not working on such a difficult surgery without Taehyung's guidance.

She had begun to rely on his warm voice to help her focus through the stress.

She made a mistake maybe two, each time Doctor Shin called her out and helped her correct it.

Chaeyoung stared through the window on the other side. She could see her ex-boyfriend and the man she liked, working hand in hand to save the patient. Shouldn’t she be doing the same?

“Doctor Park, if you really want to help Doctor Yoon, we need to save this patient. Otherwise he could be in a mountain of trouble.” Ryujin explained reading her thoughts.

Chaeyoung refocused. However, there was something about Doctor Shin’s voice at that moment.

There was worry in it, there was determination, there was care. But who was it for? Which one?

Chaeyoung decided to ignore it. She was enjoying talking with Doctor Shin, she shouldn't put her jealousy in front of a possible friendship.

An hour passed when they finished.

“Good work everyone.” Doctor Shin announced as they finished suturing up the patient. The surgery had been successful the Chairman would make a full recovery.

“Great work Doctor Shin!” Doctor Jin praised her.

“Good job Unnie!” Nurse Lee congratulated her.

"You're really the real deal." Nurse Oh added on.

Chaeyoung stared at the scene. She wasn’t jealous, that wasn’t the word, maybe slightly disappointed. Disappointed in herself for allowing herself to be distracted.

Her emotions getting the better of her... as usual.

“Good work as well, Doctor Park.” Nurse Jang always seemed to be there for her. She appreciated that.

“Wow, beautiful and skilled.” Doctor Jin acknowledged walking out of the operating room. “What kind of planet do you have to save in your past life to be like that?”

“A very large one.” Chaeyoung grinned as she answered his joke.

She couldn’t help but be drawn to the young woman as well.

After trashing her scrubs she noticed that everyone was standing in front of the first operating room. Dozens of curious gazes on the two prodigy doctors working in unison.

It made her wondered why Taehyung had rushed over to the other side. Why had he felt sick as he operated on their side?

She knew that he always seemed to make his actions based on his conscience and decided that she should trust him.

“Shall we get dinner?” Chaeyoung turned to see Doctor Shin standing in front of her. Dressed in her white doctor's coat and bright face, someone might've mistaken her as an actual angel.

Chaeyoung glanced at the time it was already 8pm.

“Um, maybe we should wait. Doctor Shin. I think—” Chaeyoung didn’t want to deny her request but she also wanted to wait for Taehyung. She was worried about him.

“We can get the two doctors some food to go. I think they’d appreciate that more.” Chaeyoung nodded realizing that Doctor Shin was right. “Also speak casually with me, I’d prefer that.”

“Unnie!” They both turned to see Nurse Lee run towards them, dressed casually now. “Are you getting dinner?”

“Of course you can come.” Chaeyoung smiled as she responded, before glancing back at Doctor Shin. “If it’s ok with you?”

Doctor Shin nodded and the three left together, out of the hospital, down towards the underground garage.

“Let’s take my car. I’m still getting used to driving so maybe you can give me some pointers.” Doctor Shin requested

For a second Chaeyoung had forgotten that she had only just recently arrived back in Korea. Her Korean was so natural... she could be mistaken as a local.

“Wow, what if we die though?” Nurse Lee teased as they stepped out of the elevator and into the parking lot staring at the rows of cars.

Chaeyoung watched as Doctor Shin took out a pair of keys. They followed her to a decent size grey sedan that seemed pretty new. That’s when she pressed the button on her keys. There was a fancy chirp.

It wasn’t the sedan but the bright red BMW parked behind it that lit up its blinkers.

“Daebak.” Nurse Lee’s jaw dropped. Chaeyoung, despite being from a rich family, didn’t even drive a flashy car because she wanted to earn her belongings.

“Wow, are you secretly rich?” Nurse Lee interrogated grabbing onto the Doctor's arm.

“Actually, I made a good amount of money while working in China. So I thought I’d spend it a little frivolously here.” She answered somewhat embarrassed.

“So where to?” Doctor Shin asked her as they had all climbed into the fancy sports car.

"Meat?" Chaeyoung proposed.

"Call!" Naeun chimed excitedly from the backseat.

⚕: Taehyung

“You! I don’t even know what to say.” The chairman paced back and forth furiously, his heavy footsteps clamping against his office floor.

“Do you know how shocked I was? I almost had a heart attack myself when the chairman’s wife called me telling me the lead surgeon walked out on his surgery.”

“Sir, I…” It was Director Jung replying in his place.

“Why are you apologizing for his mistake?” The chairman questioned glaring Taehyung right in the eyes. “I know you have a conscience we all do, but this hospital is 5% owned by the Doinbee group.”

Taehyung bowed his head. “Sir, with all due respect, I cannot apologize for saving a patient who was obviously illegally donating an organ.”

The chairman sighed as he planted himself back down on his desk, clearly holding in his frustration.

“I know, ok that’s why I didn’t tell you about this. Because I knew you’d be like this. But you went out of your way to snoop around and almost killed the chairman if not for the competency of Doctor Shin!” He yelled.

Taehyung nodded his head. He knew he had taken a chance on trusting her skills. But Doctor Shin had completed the surgery perfectly fine.

“Sir, with all due respect. We were able to save both patients this is a huge win for the hospital.” Director Jung defended him once again.

Taehyung was surprised by Jaehyun, expecting him to advocate in favor of firing him.

“You think I can tell the media, that we accepted the Chairman’s offer to operate on a perfectly healthy person in place of his son?” Both of them bowed their heads after he stated the obvious.

“Doctor Yoon, I should fire you on the spot for medical malpractice.”

Taehyung truthfully would’ve been ok with that, except— Doctor Shin was here. Everything had changed.

He wanted to find out about her.

He needed to know if she really was Sohee.

So against his conscience he sank to his knees. An action he rarely did in front of his superiors.

“I apologize for going against your command.” Both stared in shock at Taehyung’s action.

“What’s gotten into you?” The chairman questioned completely stunned.

“Please give me one more chance.” Taehyung begged holding his hands in front of him. His pride didn't matter now.

“Fine.” The chairman seemed to consider his skills once again. “If you disobey an order one more time I won’t hold back my wrath no matter how much I cherish you as a doctor.”

Taehyung nodded as he slowly got off his knees.

“I would like to speak with you alone if possible?” Director Jung suddenly requested. The chairman nodded and Taehyung left to give them some privacy.

He returned to the ICU and found the young patient resting in the bed. A steady heartrate on the EKG.

He would never be the same, he may never be able to live without daily medications, but he would live. For the first time... he would live.

Taehyung stared at him, he had learned from Director Jung that this man who had previously worked for the DoinBee group had been offered 500 million won to donate his liver. A young man whose own father was currently hospitalized and unable to work, decided to follow through with the procedure posing as the chairman’s son.

Taehyung wondered how he did it… to be able to sacrifice for his parents like that.

His father sacrifice his everything for him. Now it was too late for him to ever repay his father's sacrifice.

Taehyung dropped off his white coat in his office and prepared to leave when an arm wrapped itself around his shoulder.

“Dinner?” Taehyung turned and almost screamed like a woman seeing Director Jung of all people. “The others started without us.”

Taehyung glanced at his watch, it was 10 pm.

“Others?” He asked curiously.

“You prick just come with me.” Director Jung dragged him to his car, a sleek black Mercedes SUV and they both hopped in.

“Who’s there?” Taehyung wondered.

“Everyone.” Director Jung answered. Taehyung rolled his eyes.

“Like Chaeyoung?”

“You don’t get to call her by her first name.” Her exboyfriend retorted. “Ryujin told me they met everyone at the same restaurant and are still there waiting for us.”

“Ryujin?!” Now Taehyung was the one getting annoyed. “Since when were you so close to Doctor Shin?”

“Hey, are you jealous right now? Can I hit you?” Director Jung raised his hand to slap him. <
