Ticking Clock

My Boss and his Assistant

They had fun. More than she could admit to herself for it was with a man who did not go by the name of Choi Seunghyun.

Kwon Jiyong is her knight in an armour is disguise. He was able to sweep under her and carry her off to a land of glee and carelessness. They had screamed through almost all of the rides, talked about the most natural things in line ups, devour oily junk at every second stand, and most of all, she didn't have to pretend to be someone she wasn't. He wasn't overbearing, he didn't have a mother that hated her, and he never made her feel shy in her own skin. She felt free from herself, that is, until their getaway was interrupted by a phone call.

/Halmeoni?/ she inquired as she pulled Jiyong aside into a quiet store.

/Yoona sweetie, where are you right now?/

/Me?/ she took a quick glance at him, wondering what the question was intended for. /I'm out with Jiyong at Lotte World./

/Well Seunghyun wanted to leave the house but I don't want him out without any protection. I'll just send him to where you are so that I am assured he's safe with you as his bodyguard./

/Halmeoni../ She tried to reason.

/Neh?/

/but halmeoni.../ that was all she could say.

There was a brief pause on the other end. /Do you remember the promise? I know things are a little complicated right now, but I really hope you don't quit and stay by his side./

She let out a sigh, she could never go against her life saviour's wishes. /I won't quit. Just tell him to meet us at the entrance./

She could imagine a weary smile upon halmeoni's face, making her decision a little easier. They bid each other goodbye before she hung up, turning on her heel to face Jiyong.

"What is it?"

"Seunghyun is coming."

--------------------------

Her heart was swallowing her up as she paced back and forth in front of Jiyong. Immediately after the call, her legs wobbled all the way to the gates just with the mere thought of confronting him after the morning's events. Jiyong on the other hand, no matter how much space he wanted to give her for the day, was itching desperately to ask what had happened the night he dropped her off. From her behaviour, he gathered that they broke it off. He wanted to ask her why, and convince her against it but he didn't want to spoil her mood. Or theirs. It's been ages since they went out like this, just the two of them, long enough to have made him forget his feelings for her. Yet there she was today, eyes shining and smile so beautiful that he became selfish, dreading the talk he wanted to have with her. But he knew he had to have it, especially as he watched her wait so anxiously for Seunghyun.

Just as she found the courage to speak, a strong figure emerged from the crowd towards them. She took a deep breath, taking in his image. Even after months of dating, she never got over his good looks which just makes her all the more self-conscious. She asked herself the question again, why does he even like me?

He loves you. Her inner self seemed to yell at her however she successfully ignored it, supported by the vision of Yuri trailing shortly behind him.

She and Jiyong rose, standing up straight as the short distance between them felt so long before they actually reached. The guys were the first to greet each other and Yuri gave Yoona a quick hug.

"Hey" he greeted her awkwardly as she returned it with a strained smile.

"So, what do you guys want to do?" Yuri spoke excitedly. "It's been forever since I've been to an amusement park."

"Well we've been on pretty much all of the rides, so if you want to go on rides, we can just hang around and watch." Jiyong offered the first choice.

"A-almost all of them?" Seunghyun couldn't help but choke out in extreme jealousy. There were a lot of rides at Lotte World, and to have been on almost all of them was something he didn't even get to do with her. He shivered at the thought of her clinging onto Jiyong's arm when the adrenaline of the rides was too much, or being huddled closely into one seat.

"That sounds good" Yuri had agreed as she glanced at Seunghyun who was only looking at Yoona.

"Actually I'm not up for rides." he spoke begrudgingly. "Let's just walk around and do the game stands."

After a mutual agreement, the four set off into the same direction. Yuri and Seunghyun were leading and she felt a pang of pain when Yuri grabbed his hand. She however, looked away, not seeing the way he tried to shake it off.

She found her perfect revenge as she stopped the gang, turning to the game she just wanted to see.

"Let's do this one"

Everyone turned to where she was pointing, jaws dropping as they burst into laughter.

------------------------------

After secretly exchanging word with Jiyong, and convincing Yuri quietly that it would be fun to watch Seunghyun tackle it, they all joined forces making him lose at rock-paper-scissors. She smirked as he groaned, volunteering to be the next target to be dunked into the tank.

All three of them snuck into the line of people throwing balls at the target, hoping to hit it so that the famous Choi Seunghyun could be dropped into the cold water. Person after person failed, she even watched Yuri and Jiyong miss. Finally, she stepped to the line that indicated the required distance from the target. She was given a ball by the loud spokesperson who ran the game and tossed it lightly in her hand while giving him a mischievous smile. He knew that smile and it caused him to playfully glare at her.

'Don't you dare' he mouthed to her however it was lost in her eyes as she bit her lips, turning to concentrate on the bull’s-eye. She hadn't actually thought that she would be able to hold the ball because she thought for a fact that someone in front of her was bound to end it. It didn't bother her because all that mattered was that he would be the one dunked. However, now it felt more exciting to have the chance of hitting the target herself. She hoped that placing herself later in the line would allow her to examine where people went wrong and hopefully learn from them.

There were loud hoots and hollers after the splash was heard. She cupped laughing as she saw his figure in the transparent glass of the tank flailing to swim back to the surface. She gave Jiyong and Yuri high fives as they watched Seunghyun climb out and approach them. He combed his soaking hair back as he gave a chilling smirk.

"Come here" he beckoned her who was still bent over, grabbing her stomach laughing. She backed away, holding her arm in front of her as she saw the smile on his face. She shook her head as he came closer and closer, wanting to break out into a full-fledged run if it was not for the large crowd of people.

"Seunghyun" she warned him, it coming off as a dare though for she was still laughing madly.

"You asked for it" he teased as he saw her being stopped by people behind her, taking the chance to run towards her.

"No no no!" she had kicked her legs once he scooped her up bridal style. His wet clothes transferred to hers as she was forced to hook her arm around his neck.

Everyone around them had cheered as they saw the couple's actions. He smiled ear to ear as he held her close, watching her plead him to let her go.

"Are you ready?" he asked once he took the steps up to the chair.

"Seunghyun don't!" she shrieked when she felt the cold seat on her thighs. She stared ahead to see Jiyong already holding a ball in his hands as he jocundly smiled at her while Yuri was quietly watching her. Something on her face indicated that she wasn't very happy yet Yoona didn't delve into it especially when she was about to face a very watery fate.

"Enjoy it" he had whispered as he slowly backed away from her satisfyingly.

Every shot made her more anxious as they continuously missed until finally, she felt the chair dip from under her causing her to quickly fall in after a short shout. It happened quickly but the moment she felt another figure in the pool with her everything slowed down. She saw him in his plaid shirt and jeans come closer and closer, wrapping her in his arms before both heads appeared above the water.

Girls swooned at the scene while men cheered him on. However, all of this went unnoticed by the two because they were focused on each other.

"If you haven't noticed, I do know how to swim now" she spoke.

A small smile tugged at his lips. "Thanks to me"

She didn't say anything but nodded slightly in acknowledgement. She then turned him around so that they would leave the pool. The cold finally hit them as they shook, given well-deserved towels from the spokesperson.

"We should go buy some dry clothes."Jiyong had tended to her. Good news, they found a store within minutes. Bad news, there was only one kind of shirt, so Yoona and Seunghyun were now wearing couple shirts. She had awkwardly stood there as Seunghyun came out of the change room wearing the white shirt with bright letters. Jiyong however noticed that it was short sleeved and since it was getting dark and chilly, he lent her his coat so they could at least hide the irony of couple shirts.

She and Jiyong were now getting tired as they decided to retire to the last relaxing ride.

The Ferris wheel.

When he saw her drag Jiyong towards the ride, he lost all hope of being on it with her. He stood behind them in line and watched as they got into the sheltered car, and the operator closing the door of it. However, instead of not going on it and torture himself with thoughts about what could be going on in one of the cars, he made sure to sit with Yuri in one behind them. That way, he could see the top of their heads through the small glass window and supervise anything he deemed unsuitable.

-------------------

"I'm tired" she had whispered once the Ferris wheel started turning.

"Well it's expected. We spent the entire day at an amusement park." he chuckled.

She sat up straight, suddenly serious. "No. I'm tired Ji"

Right then, he understood. She was emotionally drained. He was glad however that she initiated the topic and that she was opening up to him instead of having to interrogate.

"I told you to fight for him." he stated matter-of-factly

"I couldn't!" she was exasperated as she uttered the line.

"You pushed him away didn't you? That is so like you Yoona! Of course you would do that."

"What's that supposed to mean?" she defended herself feeling accused as his presumptions.

"I mean that you cowered away! The second you tell yourself that you're underserving, you just run away."

"No one understands!!" she screeched, pointing accusingly at him. "Ji you don't understand because you've never been to where I've been! For goodness sakes before all this I lived in the storage room of a restaurant. I was a slave to dozens of jobs that someone of my size and age should have never even heard of. All this-" she waved her hands around, tossing the bag of expensive wet clothes onto the ground, "this isn't mine. This life isn't me! And him? He himself is the embodiment of this life. There's no in between. It's either he stoops to the life I've been living or I rise to his. But that's just it, I'm not going to pull him down with me and I don't ever want to become something I'm not just to get to the top. So yes oppa, I'm sorry if I'm a coward for wanting to save both of us." she was finally able to vent her bottled up feelings to someone who listened intently without a word, analyzing her every sentence,

He watched as tears began streaming down her face as she frantically tried wiping them away. She let out a dry laugh. "I know that I look like a mess right now, but I'll be fine in a few weeks. I'll forget about him, he'll forget about me, everything will turn out fine."

"You yourself know that that's not true. I don't know about you but he's not going to forget about you anytime soon. Should I tell you why Seunghyun is crazy for you?"

"No don't" she tried to stop him.

"Because you are not like anything he's dealt with in his life. The life that you seem to think he enjoys so much. He doesn't. And just when he was really getting sick of it, you came along and made his life a little more meaningful. You and your radiance, the way even your most strained smiles can brighten up someone’s mood, the way you care more about others than you do yourself, your clumsiness and the way you contradict yourself, your headstrong opinions, and the way you stand up for yourself by  knowing some sick karate moves and your smart mouth. Where did she go? The girl I'm looking at right now isn't her."

She gritted her teeth as she tried to hold back anymore tears. To try to stray away from the words that hit her heart. "That girl turned into a lost puppy that only knew Choi Seunghyun."

She looked up to face Jiyong who was at a loss for words. "I didn't know what I was doing, all I knew was that I was happy to be wherever he was and that I was happy to be loved by him. If you want the girl you're talking about back again, she needs to be separated from him. Please. Please just support me on this. You're the only person I’ll ever tell this to so just be on my side not his."

"You haven't convinced me yet Yoona. You may have him convinced because he is so naively hurt, but not me. However, your choice is your choice, you know I'll always be on your side" he had taken her hand in his, comforting her from all the wounds he may have opened due to their talk.

She leaned in, hugging him as a sign of thanks. "I'm tired" she whispered again as he peeked out the window, seeing that their cart was nearing the ground.

"I'll take you home."

----------------------

"I'm taking you home" came his command.

"What? No? Jiyong is taking me home." she shook his hand off half thinking he was joking.

He was not. Seunghyun had witnessed everything. From their intimate talk to them leaning closer and even hugging. His heart wrenched with anger and sadness that the time all four got off the cart, he sped towards her and spun her around.

She intended to turn back around until Seunghyun barked his next command. "Jiyong, your house and Yuri's house is in the same direction. Take her home. I'll take care of Yoona."

The two spectators stood there, not knowing what to do.

"I'm sure Yuri wants you to drive her and like I said, Jiyong is already taking me home." she had insisted once more.

"Why waste gas going in opposite directions? Imagine the pollution we're contributing. I thought you were all about the environment huh?" he taunted, reminding her of all the double sided print outs he's collected since she started printing his papers for him.

"Yeah Yoona, its fine. I know that you really do care about that stuff. Jiyong doesn’t mind taking me home right?" Yuri had finally intervened, glancing at Seunghyun and then Jiyong.

He felt apologetic since he had just promised to be on her side, but this situation was out of his control and it wasn't suited for such a promise, so he ended up shrugging. Like that, she found herself in the front seat of Seunghyun's car as the car she wished she was in headed out in the other direction.

The car ride did not go as he had planned. He had wanted to talk to her, talk his heart out yet as she sat right beside him, his mind seemed to go haywire. First, he kept glancing at her hand. The one that was placed on the arm rest, so close to his which held the clutch. He could feel his hand being drawn to hers, just wanting to relish in the feeling of her soft skin in his palm. It was like she knew exactly what he was thinking, causing her to retract her hand and place it onto her lap. Not that she was a mind reader, just that she felt it too. Then came her breathing. Her slow, steady breathing that indicated she wasn't feeling any of the emotions he was feeling at the moment. His breathing was irregular because he was feeling anxious and excited, happy she was finally in the same space as him yet sad, angry and frustrated.

Then he couldn’t focus on anything else but the sound of a ticking clock. It wasn't a clock however, but her fingernails as she clicked them against each other. She didn't seem to notice how loud it was in his ears for she was staring out the window in a daze. As she continued, it resembled more and more of a clock as time ticked on and soon, they arrived home without so much as a word spoken to each other. She unbuckled her seatbelt and was ready to get out of the suffocating vehicle until she heard a sharp cluck. He had locked the doors.

"Seunghyun" she pleaded, too exhausted to show attitude.

"I just want to talk" he spoke softly, still staring out of the windshield.

"Can't it wait until tomorrow?"

"No it can't. Or else I'm going to be up all night thinking about it."

"...Fine, but make it quick."

He finally turned to her, gazing at her deeply making her sleepiness disappear for she could stay up all night staring at him. However, she didn't let it show on her face as she waited for him to continue.

"The only time I've felt this empty was when my father passed away." he briefly paused and the pain in his voice made her soften yet regretful that she was the cause. "I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life after that or who I wanted to be when my role model had just disappeared. Without knowing it, I became that person you witnessed when we first met. But I like the person I've become, the person you helped discover. I don't want to go back to being cold and miserable so I'm not going to be. I'm going to give you the space you desire, but that doesn't mean I'm going to do everything you want me to do. I'm not going to marry Yuri."

"You're not going to have a choice Seunghyun." She spoke up, touched yet still torn. She knew what the inevitable outcome will be. Misook will win.

"If not then I'm going to prolong the wedding date for as long as possible. I'm going to wait for you Yoona. I'll wait for the day that you're willing to fight for us. I’ll drop everything to fight with you and by then, no one can stop us."

She was so close to following her gut. To smile and nod her head. The ding from her phone captured her attention first as a notification popped onto the screen. She opened it, revealing a subscription to a newspaper that her job required her to apply to because it was known for its articles on Choi Seunghyun's life.

closed and she found it hard to breathe as she looked up from her phone. "Time's up Seunghyun," her voice cracked as she held her phone to his face.

In big bold capitals, the title screamed:

'CHOI SEUNGHYUN'S ENGAGEMENT PARTY SET A WEEK FROM NOW.'
