Short Fiction for Dahyun
It was a date. A study date was still a date Dahyun tries to convince herself, as she settles besides Mina. Gaze faltering up and down, still in disbelief that Mina agreed. Mina, the girl with soft, messy dark hair furled in a loose bun. Fluttering eyelashes nearly brushing cheekbones. Delicate collarbones shifting with light movements, lying next to her.
“All good, comfortable?” Dahyun asks, trying to play it cool.
“Mmm,” Mina hums in a honeyed tone that has Dahyun swooning, fighting back a gasp.
“Shouldn’t you be studying too?” Mina asks sceptically. Face not lifting from her notes. Finals were around the corner, and she couldn’t quite understand how Dahyun was so unfazed by it all.
Dahyun blinks, tilting her head to the side, fingers twirling the ballpoint, “I am.”
“No you’re not? You don’t even have your textbook out.” Mina gestures meaningfully at the abandoned books sprawled on the bed, taking up centre position.
“I’m studying you.”
Then there’s a pause for so long, that for a terrifying second, Dahyun wonders if she’s weirded Mina out, gone too far, or said too much. But then in her quiet voice Mina says, “What?” with an ever slight smile. Prior to answering, Dahyun takes a moment to contemplate the nature of the situation, taking several factors into account. Mina’s gentle puzzled look, her body language and the fact that it was the first time Mina had come over. Though after all that, no valuable insight was gained from Dahyun’s analysis. So instead, Dahyun inwardly clears repeatedly, bites her bottom lip before continuing. “Nothing, I’m just teasing you.” She caves forcing an awkward chuckle.
“You’re silly,” Mina jests with a muffled giggle leaning in towards Dahyun, shoulders just grazing. It’s probably nothing to Mina, but Dahyun is subconsciously jotting it down to the list of other casual touches that started six months back. It all began in one of their chemistry classes.
