Maerin nearly dropped her two swords on the ground, but was cautious enough to remember they were surrounded by multiple enemies. The shock of her mistake was so devastating, she found her entire body trembling in fear.
Her teeth clattered together as she quickly caught Taemin who began to lose consciousness. By the time her knees landed on the ground, she hadn’t even realized the entire setting had changed. They were no longer in the townsquare, nor was her mother being stoned to death by the humans. Instead, they were now surrounded by familiar looking trees. It resembled the Mirage Forest they had entered before.
Taemin began coughing up blood, which drew Maerin’s attention back on him. She supported the weight of his head with her hand, but knew it wasn’t enough. “We need a medic,” she called out.
“Jinah is in a bad condition too,” Jihye suddenly said.
Maerin then realized Taemin wasn’t alone. He had brought Jihye, Myungsoo, and Hoseok along. Jineul had also been standing there, simply enjoying the view, it seemed. Yet, she couldn’t recall whether any of them possessed any healing abilities.
Jihye was kneeling next to Jinah, checking her pulse to see whether she was still alive. Miraculously, after the heavy bleeding, Jinah still managed to breath despite the excruciating pain she had to endure every passing second.
“What should we do?” Jihye asked, looking at Myungsoo for help.
“My healing only works on elves,” Myungsoo stammered. He was a cleric who learned basic combat skills for the sake of this battle, but other than that, had practiced healing his entire life. Jihye was aware of it too.
“If you don’t want to help other races, you should just say so,” Jihye told him with a glare. She knew how far Myungsoo’s capabilities extended to and believed he was lying. The look Myungsoo gave her almost made her regret her words. He looked pained.
“Don’t act like you know me when you were the one ignoring me,” Myungsoo suddenly burst, which made Jihye flinch in surprise.
“Uhm guys, if you wanna fight it out, should you do it before or after the human died?” Hoseok asked unsurely.
“Does it matter? Myungsoo doesn’t have any plans on saving her anyway,” Jihye spoke. Clearly, she was overtaken by her anger to control her own speech.
Myungsoo exhaled, looking at Jinah who was panting heavily with her eyes closed. Though she was still breathing, she was slowly losing her consciousness. “We need to look for Biah,” he then suggested.
“Why Biah?” Hoseok asked in confusion.
“She has the Adamas Staff that once belonged to the most powerful white mage in the elven realm. If anyone can heal these wounds, it would be her,” Myungsoo replied, remembering he had been fascinated when he saw Biah’s Adamas Staff for the first time. It was decorated with diamonds that bore magical healing powers capable to heal even the mightiest beasts.
“Maybe we can also help—” Jihye stopped midway as she turned to the space where Maerin and Taemin had previously occupied. Only a small pool of blood remained. “Where’d they go?”
“Actually, I don’t see Jineul either,” Hoseok remarked.
The three stared at each other, wondering what had happened. But for now, they had to somehow help the human. It was a battle to kill, but something in them simply couldn’t. Not yet, at least.
Nari realized Yoongi was outnumbered, but knew he had enough strength and skills to handle both her and Jongdae. Besides, if Jongdae helped finish off the human, the last thing she wanted was to be indebted to him.
“Leave him be,” she called out, much to Jongdae and Yoongi’s surprise.
“I don’t need your mercy,” Yoongi hissed, of course, being ungrateful for the slightest chance to stay alive.
“I wasn’t offering any,” Nari said, calmly continuing to smoke her cigarette.
Jongdae’s confusion soon turned into a hearty chuckle, smug and annoying. “Are you afraid you’d fall for me if you saw me finish off the human? Or are you afraid to see what I’d be capable to inflict towards your boyfriend?” He questioned Nari.
She only glared at him. “Shut up.”
Jongdae laughed at her adorable antics in his eyes. He then turned to Yoongi with a courteous bow. “Your majesty, since you are too prideful to take your leave, we shall be the ones to excuse ourselves.”
Yoongi was not planning to let them go. Being spared by them didn’t mean he had to return the favor. So he took his halbert when the two werewolves moved, but before he could charge, Jongdae suddenly turned around and swung something. It flashed by so quick, and whatever it was made Yoongi feel his feet pressed together. He fell down from losing his balance.
“Oh my, the crown prince is bowing before me, a mere peasant. You flatter me, your majesty,” Jongdae said with a high sense of mockery. Every single time he addressed Yoongi using his royal status was all just to provocate the human.
Nari was losing her patience at this point and had to pull Jongdae along before he’d provocate the human that could lead to his own death.
Yoongi clenched his teeth, staring at his legs. His ankles were tied using some a three roped weapon that had small wooden balls attached on one end. It looked like a bola. The move and weapon was so simple, yet it successfully immobilized him. Kim Jongdae was not someone to mess with.
Jineul was creeping in on Maerin and Taemin who had found shelter somewhere further away from the others. Maerin’s movements were less agile now that she had to take care of Taemin. She had to wait for him to die before the wendigos could have their meal. So Jineul observed all there was to see from behind a tree. The goblin girl was stupid enough to not notice anything.
There was however another being who was smart enough to discover her hideout, yet foolish enough to think she could ever be ambushed. The person’s footsteps were noisy and loud to Jineul’s trained sense of hearing, and she waited for the right timing to make her attack.
When she practically sensed the person just inches away from her, Jineul’s hands moved quickly to grab the two handed battle axe from her back. She swung her weapon as her body pivoted along. Next thing she knew, her axe loudly clashed against a great club made out of steel.
“I should’ve known it was you,” Jineul said, grinning when she saw Sungjong as the wielder of the great club.
“Then why didn’t you stop me?” Sungjong asked. He retracted his weapon, and despite being on somewhat friendly terms with Jineul, tried to attack her again from the side.
His moves were too predictable and Jineul had memorized almost his entire combat pattern based on the friendly sparring matches they occasionally had. She followed his attempt accordingly, always blocking it with her axe, yet not strong enough to cut through his steel.
“You know I’d never pass on a chance to spar with you,” Jineul said, swinging her axe to the top of his head, but he quickly flicked her arms sideways. If she managed to slice him in half, great. If she missed, it was also fine. She never tried to hold back, but so far Sungjong always managed to block her. It was a weird relationship they shared.
The two continued battling for a while until they grew tired and sat down at the tree, side by side, panting rhythmically in sync.
“So really, what are you up to?” Sungjong asked, casually leaning his head against hers. She just let him, so he didn’t bother to change his position.
“Hunting for dinner,” Jineul answered.
“I don’t see you attacking anyone aside from me,” Sungjong remarked.
“I thought my dinner would die on its own. But maybe I should ask Namjoon on what to do,” Jineul said, moving away from him without any warning.
Sungjong nearly stumbled over, but continued staring at her as she got up. “Do you always have to ask Namjoon for permission?”
“It is better to follow him than to anger him,” Jineul simply answered. She glanced once more to see Taemin and Maerin idle in place. There was still no progress. She had time to retrieve Namjoon.
Sungjong glanced up at her as his fingers traced the outline of his great club resting beside him. “What if Namj
