Not That Type

It was subtle. Quickly delivered but very much clear.

Kim Nayoung’s umma wants to meet whoever her daughter is dating.

I tried a new marinated recipe. It’s soaked for even longer, ah. Nayoungah you’ve come home late again last night didn’t you. (Of course it wasn’t a question she didn’t even wait for a response) I think this recipe is better than the last, right yeobo? (Nayoung’s appa didn’t even bother to answer) Bring your friend sometime to taste this specialized bulgogi. More rice yeobo? (She already refilled her husband’s bowl)

But Nayoung knows she’ll never make Hana meet her parents.

“This is the last time I’m doing this.” Frustration mixed with anger with a hint of concern filled Nayoung’s voice along with other profanities coming out from her as she tries not to let Hana’s face be one with the pavement. Which is hard considering the way her lover— (right. she’s not mine to begin with)

“Aiiishh!” As she hurriedly pull back the drunken woman’s hair before it got mixed with her vomit.

Shin Hana isn’t the type you brought home and introduce to your parents.
Because she’s delinquent.

Countless bows, different terms of apologies by Nayoung filled the precinct. She got a call. A drunken call. Again. Because Hana knows there isn’t a last time for Nayoung to cross whatever the she wanted her to cross for her.

“Next time you’ll explain to the judge.” The police officer warned the scoffing Hana while Nayoung thank him and managing to get a hold of the sleepy Hana.

Shin Hana isn’t the type you brought home and introduce to your parents.
Because she’s reckless.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” It’s dark at night, but Hana can clearly see the doubt, the willingness in Nayoung’s eyes.

“Yeah. No commitment right?” Nayoung answered Hana by sealing her lips against hers with the moon as their witness.

Shin Hana isn’t the type you brought home and introduce to your parents.
Because she said it herself.

“What do you want to do tonight?” Earning a soft gasp from Nayoung. Hana shrugged. “Can’t drink because they rescheduled my work tomorrow. I have to be there early.” Hana says nonetheless but Nayoung knows it’s hard for her to spit out the words. She knows that for her saying those words screamed for attention. And she knows Hana isn’t the type who submits first.

“I-i don’t know.” Shock took over Nayoung, “W-what do you have in mind?” Her parents sitting, waiting for them in their dining room entered her mind. She shook her head. “Because I can’t think of any.”

Hana can think of one. Honestly it’s been taking over her mind for quite a while now. Contemplating to introduce Nayoung to her father. She’s not worried wether her father would like Nayoung. Everyone likes Nayoung. She’s kind, beautiful, smart, beautiful, but again all of the cons for the situation conquered her mind. What if Nayoung’s the one who doesn’t like my father? After losing her mother only days after turning one, that’s when her trust issues began. What if Nayoung freaks out after meeting my father? Hana cannot afford losing someone like nayoung. And so she doesn’t.

Kim Nayoung isn’t the type you brought home and introduce to your parents.
Because if the two of you broke up your father would start walking in egg shells again wondering why you let someone with that kind of love get away. Your father will keep on forgetting not to place a third plate on the table because he’s used to the three of you laughing about how she can make you do those things that you thought were impossible and he’ll be curious why you didn’t do everything you could just to keep her by your side. At Christmas he’ll spill it because it’s the only time of the year where he can fully enjoy himself and have too much alcohol without caring about his endless work just for you to live comfortably to let out the pent up frustrations for over the years and ask why is it that everyone who loves you ended up leaving us. And hana cannot lose both her and her father who’s just as lovely, as dedicated when it comes to his love ones which she wished she got that kind of trait from him. But she didn’t so she doesn’t invite Nayoung to her home even after they make love, even after they graduate, even after months of knowing each other. But she’s hoping, with Nayoung’s help. She’s hoping that one day she could and she’ll be the first one to initiate a promise of forever.
