Chapter Twelve
congrats class of 2017!
It was finally here. The day every high school senior looks forward to. Graduation. All seniors and staff were to report to Joongdong by at least noon. in order for them to set-up everything. Students who were strong lifted chairs and podiums while the students would couldn't were busy getting things organized so that everything was set up for their last day as teenagers. "I need to know between you two," Mr. Jung, the principal, asked both Sumin and Hongseok. "Who will be giving a valedictorian speech, considering there are two of you this year." The two valedictorians looked at each other, waiting for the other to speak up first. "Sumin can do it." Hongseok said with a kind smile. Sumin looked over at him with a shocked expression, not expecting the president of the student council to let her make the speech. "Are you sure?" She questioned him, wanting to make sure that Hongseok was okay with such a decision. "Yep, your speech sounds way better than mine anyways." Sumin smiled at Hongseok's kind words, he really had softened up a bit since he started dating Jiae. "Alright, well that settles it then. I look forward to this speech of yours, Ms. Sung." Mr. Jung said with a proud smile before making his way back to the rest of the staff members. Sumin walked back over to where Myungjun was, who was chatting away with his fellow drama club seniors. "What did the principal want?" He asked with a curious smirk. "He wanted to know who would be making a speech at tonight's ceremony." "And...?" Myungjun questioned again with a slightly larger smirk. "I'll be speaking tonight." Sumin said simply, despite Myungjun's reaction being quite over-the-top. "I can't wait! Hongseok said it was a great speech you had prepared." Sumin's face became slightly flushed at Myungjun's words. She was definitely feeling a bit of pressure now. What if her speech wasn't to everyone's expectations? "Good luck, Sumin!" "Yeah, good luck, VP!" The drama club seniors cheered, wishing their valedictorian the best. With an awkward smile, Sumin shuffled away from Myungjun and the drama club to go find Jiae. She needed someone to cheer her up. Who better than an actual cheerleader?
By the time Sumin had found Jiae, it was already time for one the small snack breaks that the staff set up. "Why the long face?" Jiae asked as she took a bite out of one of the free donuts that the staff had prepared. "I'm nervous. What if I mess up making my speech?" Sumin immediately spoke, literally showering Jiae with word vomit. "Woah, woah. Slow down, you're going to be okay. We will all be there for you. Your friends are the only ones that matter. No matter how "bad" you mess up, we will be there by your side." Jiae said giving the nervous girl a gentle but much needed hug. "You're right. Thank you, Jiae..." Sumin sighed, pushing her negative thoughts back into the depths of her mind. Being panicky and nervous was like her anyways. She needed to be strong and confident. "I feel much better now so you can let go now." Sumin spoke up awkwardly as Jiae was still hugging the girl while eating a donut. "Oh! Sorry..." Jiae giggled and released the girl from her embrace. Sumin slightly smiled at the girl, who was still slightly an air-head in her mind. She made her way back to Myungjun and the drama club kids, sticking close to Mari and Joori instead of Myungjun himself. "Good luck tonight." Joori smiled as Sumin sat down, genuinely wishing the girl the upmost luck. By Joori's side was both Changgu and Chungha, both of which had been sticking close to her ever since prom. "Yeah, go and kill it, Sumin!" Changgu chuckled as he cheered Sumin on as well, with Chungha shooting her a thumbs up from behind Joori. "Thanks everyone..." Sumin said with a shy smile, feeling even better about the whole situation. There was nothing to be scared of or to be nervous about. Her friends were going to have her back no matter what happens. Whether she messes up or doesn't have an interesting enough speech, they would be by her side regardless of the outcome.
"Alright, everyone line up for the commencement!" Ms. Lim yelled as she got the seniors
