Chapter Two
why can't we be friends?
The lunch bell rang, signaling that it was now time for everyone to eat. Students, once again, flooded out of their classrooms and into the halls, trying to make it to the cafeteria before anyone else. It was usually the first and second years who were the ones rushing to make it to the cafeteria so they could secure a seat and be able to get a lunch. The third and fourth years on the other hand, they didn't really care as some of them just brought lunch or would stop by the nearby 7/11 to buy a lunch there. As for seats, well, the upperclassmen had their way of finding a place to sit and eat; whether it was outside on the roof or inside a classroom with a teacher. Jiae held hands with Mingyu as she looked around for the other committee members. "Are we not going to get lunch?" Mingyu was confused, seeing as Jiae didn't tell him what she was currently trying to do. "I'm trying to find the other committee members, I want to befriend them since we are all working on the prom together!" Jiae smiled happily as she spotted Rhea with Sana, Eunwoo, and Moonbin. "Rhea!" Jiae called out to her as she quickly made her way over to the group of four, dragging Mingyu along with her. "Oh, hi Jiae." Rhea shyly greeted, not really used to Jiae's outgoing and energetic personality. "Jiae's on the committee with you?" Sana asked Rhea with a smile. Rhea simply nodded before Sana smiled even bigger. "That's great, Rhea! Jiae is a really nice girl, try to be friends okay?" Rhea looked down shyly as Eunwoo scolded Sana for being too forward with both Rhea and Jiae. "I'd love to be friends! Rhea, if you ever need a friend, I'm here for you!" Jiae exclaimed as she took Rhea's hand into hers. Rhea smiled herself, seeing that Jiae was actually a very nice girl indeed. "I understand." Rhea sheepishly nodded, feeling a bit shy yet more open to Jiae than she had been before. "Alright, let's go get lunch!" Jiae smiled and followed the four others to the lunch line with Mingyu in tow.
Once everyone had gotten their lunch tray, the group of six made their way over to a table that was already occupied by Sungmi and Taeyong as well as Mark. "Mind if we sit with you?" Jiae asked the three with a smile, though she was mostly asking Sungmi and Taeyong as Mark could probably care less. "No, go ahead." Sungmi simply said with a small smile. Despite only knowing Jiae for about two days, she already had warmed up to the girl. Unlike most popular girls, Jiae was genuine and kind; it was no suprise people at Joongdong treated her like a celebrity. Everyone that had followed Jiae to the table followed in her lead and took a seat. "Thank you for letting us sit here." Jiae smiled happily just before eating a spoonful of the soup that the cafeteria had been selling today. "It's no problem." Sungmi continued her lunch as well while the others at the table began to converse with one another. "Thank you for helping us find a seat, Jiae." Rhea thanked Jiae with a shy smile. "No, thank you for sitting with me!" Jiae smiled happily again, making Rhea feel a bit more comfortable around the girl. Maybe the two could become friends sometime soon? Jiae looked over at the table next to them, that was preoccupied by the rest of the prom committee excluding Mari, who was no where to be seen. Hopefully they all could sit together in the future. Jiae continued to stare until she made accidently eye contact with Hongseok, who gave her an icy glare. Immediately, Jiae turned away and continued to eat her lunch. "Are you okay?" Mingyu asked, confused by Jiae's sudden shifting at the table. Jiae quickly nodded, trying to clear her own thoughts. Mingyu turned around and met Hongseok's eyes, remembering his face from somewhere. It didn't click with him until he realized it was the guy on the bike who offered Jiae a ride a few days ago. With an icy glare himself, Mingyu turned around before putting an arm around Jiae, who inwardly cringed at the contact.
It wasn't long for lunch to end, causing a majority of people to go their separate ways to their next class. Mingyu hugged Jiae goodbye before going his own way as we
