Chapter Six
getting closer and closer
Mari sat at her usual lunch table, staring off into space. This was unusual for the usually talkative Mari but she just had a lot on her mind at the current moment. She couldn't stop thinking about what had transpired just last week. Mark had caught her trying to get help from Joori so she could get her help in return but it ended up failing in the end. It wasn't the fact that she couldn't get Joori to accept her terms due to inference, what was really bothering her were the exchange of words she had with Mark. He called "self-absorbed" and "spoiled" among other things. Sure, using a bully victim to get what she wants is shady. Anyone would have thought that if they had seen or overheard their interaction. Mari wasn't going to ask Joori to do anything crazy or illegal, rather she just wanted her to get close to Jiae and convince her to not be prom queen anymore. That was literally all she was going to do in return for Chungha to back off. If anything, Mari would have done the crazy and illegal side of the deal. She was going to threaten Chungha with her father's powerful economic stance, essentially her way of telling her that if she continued, Mari would make sure to ruin her life in return. Sighing, Mari could only think about what could have come from the deal or partnership, had Mark not interferred of course. "Hello? Earth to Mari!" Sakyung spoke with an audible whine in the tone of her voice, waving her hand in front of Mari's face. Mari turned and immediately snapped out of her trance to face her friend. "Sorry, what were you saying?" Sakyung sighed but kept her smile before showing Mari something on her phone. "I was telling you that there are new Gucci purses and there are only 2,000 in the world!" Mari nodded, not really interested in the purses herself. "Okay, what about them?" She looked back at her "friend" in order to hear why this purse was so important. "Well, I was hoping you could manage to get me one! Oh, and one for Gayoung too!" Sakyung giggled, making Jaeun roll her eyes. Jaeun was Mari's best friend, and her only real friend. "Oh, well I guess I-" Before Mari could completely answer, she was cut off by Sakyung's own screeching. "What the-?" The girl hissed through her teeth as she turned and looked at the culprit who had just dumped an entire bottle of water on to her head. Behind her stood Mark with a smug look on his face, holding an empty water bottle. "You looked a bit thristy, you know for things you don't need. I didn't expect mastermind Mari to be so naïve to let someone like you two into her lives." He spat, looking at both Sakyung and Gayoung with glares as they cowered under his gaze. "It's none of your business who I have in my life, you hate me, remember?" Mari retorted, very annoyed and angry that one of her friends just got water dumped on them. "You're more foolish than I thought, you seriously thought they were your friends. They are using you. If anything, I'm the closest thing you have to a real friend right now." Mari stared at Mark dumbfounded, taking into consideration all of the times Sakyung and Gayoung asked her for things. She didn't want to admit it, but Mark was right. Turning to her "friends" with a glare, "He has a point, now that I think about it. I'm done with you two, for good." She said quickly before walking off from the table, with Sakyung and Gayoung calling after her. Mark could tell Mari was upset, and no matter how badly he didn't want to run after her, he knew he should.
It literally took Mark all day to locate Mari, for being so upset, that girl sure was good at hiding. Mark found himself at the school theater where a drama club meeting was just about to begin. Knowing that Mari was in the drama club, Mark knew he could get a chance to talk with her here at least. Walking down the aisle, Mark looked around at the students, looking for Mari. Over by herself, well sitting next to Joori, Mari sat with her head casted downwards. She still appeared to be upset, who wouldn't be? Moving with subtlety, Mark made his way over to where Mari sat in silence. Joori was the first one to notice him, watching him as he sat down beside Mari who was in her own little world. "Mari-" "I don't want to talk to you." Mari interrupted Mark instantly, not even bothering to look up at him. "Please, let me talk to you then. You don't have to ta
