It’s always been you

TaeNy One Shots

“Hyo invited me to one of her gigs this weekend, are you in?” Tiffany asked as they walked to their next class.

“Who’s going?” Taeyeon asked while busy replying to a text message.

“Everyone’s going.”

“But don’t we have that thing for the weekend?”

“We can do it next week.” Tiffany turned to her best friend. “Come on, let’s support our friend and loosen up a bit.” She nudged Taeyeon playfully who laughed in return.

“Fine, but you’re driving this time.” Taeyeon grinned.

“Yeah sure, I’m gonna tell Hyo we’re coming then.” Tiffany smiled while quickly sending a message to their friend.

They arrived to their next class just in time and got to their usual seats. Class started right away as their physics professor went in, discussing some theory she barely understood. Tiffany was clearly bored while randomly copying the notes on the board when her eyes absently shifted to the side. Aside from Mr. Choi being a boring teacher, one thing that she didn’t like about this class was they were seated alphabetically. Tiffany would love to sit beside her best friend but she ended up on the next row where Taeyeon was.

Plain black shirt and a pair of denim jeans, Taeyeon was sporting a minimalist outfit for the day which suited her well. Tiffany had known her since high school and she couldn’t remember the last time her best friend wore a colored tee. Taeyeon’s blonde hair looked so good, Tiffany thought it should be illegal for someone to look this beautiful. Turning back to her notes, she took in a deep breath to calm her rapidly beating heart.

Growing up, Tiffany would always hear comments about people not being the straightest creatures in this world. These things ranged from good to bad and ever since she realized that she was one of them, Tiffany made sure to keep it in no matter how tiring it was. It took her quite a while to accept it, and somehow she was glad Sunny accidentally caught her writing a love letter to this girl in their history class back in high school. Tiffany ended up crying that day and spilled all the frustrations she kept inside to her friend. It never felt so good to hear the words it’s okay, I accept you for who you are, giving her that validation she had always wanted.

“What took you so long?” Sunny passed a cup to Tiffany.

“Taeyeon overslept.” Tiffany answered with a shrug while taking a sip.

“Who takes a nap in the evening?” Sunny asked skeptically, glancing at their friend who was talking to Yoona.

“Apparently she does.” Tiffany turned as well and when she faced her friend again, Sunny had this smile on her face that creeped her out a bit. “What?”

“So are you finally confessing to her tonight?”

“Maybe? I don’t know.” Tiffany looked down at her drink. “What do you think?”

“I mean it’s been literally years, Tiffany.” Sunny sipped her drink. “Don’t you think it’s about time now?”

“She could be straight for all we know.”

“Really?” Sunny looked at Tiffany in disbelief. “Remember how she said people should like whoever they want?”

“That doesn’t mean anything!” Tiffany fiddled with the cup. “Besides, what if it doesn’t go well and—“

“You’ll never know unless you do it.”

“You’re right.” Tiffany sighed as she glanced to her best friend. “I just feel a little nervous. You know I’ve never done this before.”

“There, there my little gay baby.” Sunny ruffled Tiffany’s hair. “You’ll be fine, trust me.”

“If this turns into a disaster, I’m blaming you.”

“Yeah sure, whatever. Now off you go.” Sunny pushed Tiffany gently.

“Wish me luck.” Tiffany said while Sunny raised her cup with a smile. She walked right where Taeyeon was and tapped her shoulder.

“Oh hey, there you are! We were just talking about you.” Taeyeon chuckled as she pulled her closer.

“What is it?”

“We’re playing this guessing game where we try to find Sooyoung’s date for tonight.” Taeyeon grinned. “Thought you might wanna join the fun.”

“Well...” Tiffany trailed off as she looked at her other friends. “Sure, I’m in.” She shrugged and stepped closer when Taeyeon pulled her arm. They ended up huddled in the corner as Yuri tried to describe the guy they were supposed to look out for. Tiffany was barely listening, a little too distracted with how Taeyeon was close to her that she could smell the faint scent of her perfume.

“Winner gets a free lunch from Sooyoung!” Yuri said with a laugh, earning herself a slap on the arm from Sooyoung.

“Hey I didn’t say that!” Sooyoung protested.

“Whatever.” Yuri waved her friend off. “Alright, timer starts now!”

“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Tiffany shook her head in disbelief as she let Taeyeon drag her outside.

“It’s better if we look together, huh?” Taeyeon turned to Tiffany.

“I guess.”

“I have no idea who to look for. Yuri is the worst when describing someone.” Taeyeon chuckled as she eyed the people at the poolside.

“She said tall and good looking guy.” Tiffany decided to just go with it and looked around. “Hey do you want more drinks?” She asked after barely trying to find the guy.

“Yeah sure, I’ll just wait up here. I’m pretty sure that guy is just here somewhere.”

“Alright, be right back.” Tiffany nodded and went back in. As she poured some random drink in two cups, she couldn’t help but feel nervous again. Thinking that she needed a little boost of confidence, Tiffany downed the entire cup before refilling it. Feeling a little better now, she headed out and found Taeyeon behind a bush.

“Tiffany, come here!” Taeyeon waved her friend in. “Look what I found.” She giggled while pulling Tiffany closer.

“What is it?” Tiffany turned to where Taeyeon was looking.

“I didn’t know Jessica was into girls.” Taeyeon giggled again while taking her phone out to capture the evidence. “That must be nice.”

“Nice?”

“Yeah, dating girls?” Taeyeon looked back at Tiffany. “Oh, thanks.” She took the cup and took a long sip.

“Have you dated a girl before?” Tiffany blurted out before she could stop herself. Never in their 5 years of friendship did she ever ask Taeyeon about her dating life and now she just wished the ground would swallow her.

“Nope. I’ve actually never dated anyone now that I think about it.” Taeyeon furrowed her brows in thought. “Have you?”

“Have I what?” Tiffany asked nervously while trying to laugh it off.

“Dated a girl before.” Taeyeon now had her full attention to Tiffany. “I know you’ve dated that guy back in high school.”

“Why would you want to know?”

“Is that a yes?”

“Stop using my words against me!” Tiffany lightly shoved her friend away who laughed in return. “And the answer is no.” Taeyeon just looked into her eyes and for a moment, she thought there was this connection between them that would lead into a confession.

“Hey I think that’s the guy.” Taeyeon stepped to the side and pointed at someone.

“Oh.”

“Yeah, come on let’s get that free lunch.” Taeyeon chuckled as she took Tiffany’s hand.

“Sunny will be so disappointed.” Tiffany mumbled to herself as she went along, pushing the confession to the side for now.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?” Yuri struggled to lift up Taeyeon as she waited for Tiffany to open the door.

“I’m fine, thank you.” Tiffany fiddled under the seat to lower the backrest.

“Alright, let me know if you guys got home.” Yuri fastened Taeyeon’s seatbelt and stepped back to close the door.

“Will, do. Take care on your way home.” Tiffany waved goodbye and started driving. It didn’t take long until they arrived at Taeyeon’s dorm but she waited for a moment until her best friend finally woke up. “Are you alright?”

“A bit tired.” Taeyeon rubbed her eyes and looked around. “Are we home?”

“Yeah.”

“Thanks, Tiffany.” Taeyeon patted Tiffany’s hand before unfastening her seatbelt. “Great party, huh.”

“Sure.” Tiffany just waited until Taeyeon turned to her.

“Hey, have you kissed a girl before?”

“W-what?”

“I haven’t.” Taeyeon tapped her chin in thought. “I wonder how it feels like.”

“W-why are you asking me this?” Tiffany tried to laughed. “You’re so random.”

“Just curious.” Taeyeon hummed while looking right into Tiffany’s eyes.

Tiffany ended up just staring right back, unable to fully comprehend what was happening. There was that weird tension between them again, it has been going on for a few weeks now but maybe it was just her imagination. The car was filled with silence and it felt almost suffocating until she felt Taeyeon’s hand covering hers. Swallowing whatever fear she felt inside, Tiffany decided to just go for it and leaned in, capturing her best friend’s lips for a short kiss. It felt good, right even, and would like to do it again if only she hadn't stupidly pull away so quickly.

“Taeyeon, I like you.” Tiffany said nervously.

“That was nice.” Taeyeon grinned.

“What?”

“Good night Tiffany, thanks for driving me home.” Taeyeon waved goodbye and stumbled a little on her way out.

===

“So how is it going?” Sunny asked, making sure Taeyeon was far enough.

“Nothing.” Tiffany sighed, eyeing her best friend who was lining up to get her food.

“What do you mean by nothing?”

“Nothing. None. I told you it was a bad idea.” Tiffany sighed again while fiddling the cup in her hand.

“But I thought you two kissed?” Sunny scooted closer, making sure her voice was quiet enough.

“I know.” Tiffany looked back to Taeyeon with longing eyes.

“And the blatant hand holding?” Sunny asked in confusion.

“What?”

“I thought you two are together when I saw you.”

“What do you mean?”

“You two were holding hands and Taeyeon was practically all over you.” Sunny furrowed her brows.

“All over me?” Tiffany laughed at the thought. “And it’s not like it’s the first time we held hands.”

“Well, whatever it is, all I can say is that she's into you.” Sunny said with a shrug.

“Stop getting my hopes up.” Tiffany pouted at her friend’s wide grin. “I can’t even talk to her without avoiding her eyes.” She covered her face, remembering how embarrassed she was to be staring at Taeyeon’s lips earlier that day.

“You really have it bad, huh.” Sunny chuckled at Tiffany’s pink cheeks.

“I mean it’s been going on since high school.” Tiffany sighed and looked up to see Taeyeon smiling at them.

“What’s been going on since high school?” Taeyeon asked in curiosity while taking a seat next to Tiffany.

“Nothing.” Tiffany shook her head, glancing at the other girl who was holding in a laugh.

“Hmm.” Taeyeon shrugged then grabbed her utensils to eat. “You wanna grab dinner later?”

“I…” Tiffany trailed off, taking another glance at Sunny when her foot was lightly kicked.

“Am I invited too?” Sunny scooted closer.

“If you want to, sure.” Taeyeon turned to their friend and nodded.

“I mean I’d like to but I have stuff to do.” Sunny grabbed her bag before standing to leave. “And I have to go now. See you guys.”

“Bye!” Taeyeon waved at their friend and started eating. “So dinner later?” She asked again after a moment of silence.

“Uhh, sure.” Tiffany nodded absentmindedly.

“Hey how about we just stay in since we don’t have classes tomorrow?”

“Uhh…” Tiffany stared at Taeyeon, heart beating faster at the thought of them being alone. “Okay. My place or yours?”

“Yours.” Taeyeon had this childish grin on her face while pointing at Tiffany.

Tiffany only hummed in response, still staring at her best friend happily eating her lunch.

Tiffany was busy preparing for dinner when she heard the doorbell ring. With hurried steps, she went to open the door and was greeted with a smiling Taeyeon.

“Hey.” Taeyeon greeted while lifting the bag she’s been holding.

“Did you buy the sauce that you wanted?”

“They actually ran out of it so I bought something else.”

Tiffany nodded in understanding and took the bag from Taeyeon then they walked inside and into the kitchen quietly. As Tiffany was busy waiting for the water to boil, she couldn’t help but remember the conversation she had with Sunny that day. Her brain couldn’t seem to wrap up at the thought of her best friend liking her back. It was also not helping that they shared a kiss, which seemed like Taeyeon forgot since she was clearly not sober enough that night.

The sound of boiling water filled the quiet apartment while Taeyeon busied herself with walking around the living room. The girl had been quietly looking at the framed photos on the shelf and couldn’t help but smile at one picture in particular. It was a photo of Taeyeon and Tiffany during their high school graduation, huge smiles plastered on their faces. After taking a look, her eyes turned to the Tiffany who was busy stirring the pot.

“The food is almost done, Taeyeon.” Tiffany called out without looking back.

“I’ll set up the table.” Taeyeon replied right away and went about to prepare the table.

Dinner was spent with light conversations and Taeyeon complimenting Tiffany’s cooking. The girl rarely cooked, yet when she did, it’s surprisingly good. Tiffany couldn’t help but blush a little at the compliment, completely avoiding Taeyeon’s adorable gaze while she’s at it. The conversation died down and they ate in silence, at least Tiffany was trying to concentrate on her food instead of her beating heart. She had finally made up her mind that afternoon that she would confess to her best friend and take whatever was left after the words had been said.

“So Taeyeon...”

“Tiffany...”

Both of them said at the same time. They looked at each other for a moment before bursting out into a fit of laughter.

“You go first.” Tiffany nodded encouragingly.

Taeyeon spoke up, her voice tinged with a hint of vulnerability. "Tiffany, there's something I've been meaning to tell you." The air grew heavy with anticipation. "I've realized that the person who's been there for me through thick and thin, the one who knows me better than anyone else, is you."

Tiffany's heart raced as Taeyeon continued, her gaze intense. "I've been hesitant to say this, but I can't deny my feelings any longer. Tiffany, I think I'm falling for you."

The room fell quiet for a moment. Her best friend just confessed to her yet there she was, completely not believing what she just heard.

“You what?” Tiffany blinked at the eyes staring at her.

“Tiffany, I have feelings for you.”

“I—“ Tiffany was out of words, her head completely out of it.

“I know I was kinda drunk that night but yeah, I do feel the same.” Taeyeon smiled shyly.

“What?!”

“I’m sorry, I only had the courage to say it now.” Taeyeon sighed.

Tiffany felt a tingle in her chest as the words finally sunk in. She wasn’t able to control herself anymore as she grabbed the other girl and held her face closely.

“I like you too.” Tiffany gasped as soft lips met her cheek.
