The Interpreter

The constant flow of people inside the airport was a sight you were all too familiar with. Families going on trips, businessmen with their suits, travelers with their gears, and other types of people were walking and talking all at once. There were those who preferred solitude as they waited along the benches—some had their phones on their faces, and the others took the waiting time as an opportunity to sleep. And there you were amidst the hustle and bustle inside the airport. Standing beside you was a lanky blonde man in his early thirties who you just met an hour ago. He was lightly swaying back and forth as he held a cardboard in his hands. You could tell he was as anxious as you were.   “I think they’re coming out soon.” Eric said in German and you took a deep breath as you turned your attention to the glass doors and noticed that people started coming out.   “I hope they’re nice.” You said as you tried to straighten the beanie around your braided pastel pink hair.   “I have no idea who the actor is. I can’t even remember his name aside from this.” He pointed at the words on his cardboard where it simply said: Mr. Choi & Company.   You chuckled and suddenly felt extremely anxious now that it was sinking in that you got hired as a staff for a movie production. Who would’ve thought that someone like you—a struggling artist and a part-time language tutor would be working in a movie set? You just submitted your resume online a few days ago when you saw an ad looking for a Korean-German interpreter who was willing to go to Cologne and other places in Germany for six to seven weeks. There was no harm in applying and so you tried your luck. And it was only yesterday that you received a call and got hired instantly. Even though you had no experience being an interpreter before, you were fluent in four languages and was actually staying in Cologne at the moment. Maybe these were your advantages above the rest. So Eric, one of the coordinators, had e-mailed you a rundown of your tasks for the filming. Also, that your job as an interpreter would entail assisting the actor and his crew as they go around Germany—to simply make their conversations with the locals easier.   You were all too excited about all of this. Growing up watching movies had made you well-aware of how the industry worked. Still, you were all too naïve at how things actually were. And this was your chance to feed your decade long curiosity of working behind the scenes of a film.   Eric jumped on his feet and raised the cardboard on top of his head when two Korean men walked outside the glass doors. A guy with floppy hair and round glasses waved his hand as he smiled widely towards you and Eric. You smiled back. Beside him was a tall, lean guy wearing a cap and a mask. You could not see his face but there was something about his posture that was very familiar.   “Welcome to Cologne!” Eric greeted the two men in his accented English as they shook hands and he introduced both of you.   Your eyes were fixed on the masked guy because your instinct was already blaring sirens. You already knew who he was. Still, you were in denial because why would he ever be in Germany? For a second, your eyes met his and it was as if someone had punched you right in the gut. As if on cue, your face felt hot and then numb and there was a sudden buzzing sound in your ears—your heart beating a hundred times a minute. You bowed your head and desperately wiped your suddenly sweaty palms on your jeans.   “—Hong Il. And this is Choi Seung Hyun… our actor.” The glasses guy introduced and you felt like your soul left your body when the man you had admired for years shook your hand as he pulled down his mask with the other.   “It’s nice to meet you. Please call me Seung Hyun.” He spoke in Korean. His smile was shy as he briefly made eye contact with you. Feeling like an absolute creep, you just had to notice that his hand was warm and firm. And you desperately hoped yours wasn’t that sweaty.   “It’s nice to meet you as well, Seung Hyun-ssi.” You replied in the same language. Honestly, you were amazed at the fact that you were able to make coherent sentences even though you were already soulless. “I hope you will enjoy your stay here.”   “I’m sure I will. Please take care of us well.” You both let go of each other’s hand and a small talk was exchanged. You found out that the glasses guy was his manager. It only took a few moments before Eric was guiding all of you towards the exit and into the van waiting outside.   It felt like you were floating in the air—as if your soul was wandering aimlessly somewhere and your empty body was left behind. The situation was very hard to comprehend since you were too surprised. This was definitely unexpected and out of the ordinary that you swore you were just dreaming. Inside the van, you kept pinching your skin and chanting silently in your head to wake up. But it wasn’t a dream and your pinches hurt like hell. You were normally a chatty person but it was difficult to start something when your brain was still kind of buffering.   “Earlier, Mr. Eric said that you speak four languages. How?” The manager, Choi Hong Il, suddenly addressed you and Eric who was sitting in the passenger’s seat turned around curiously but swiveled back when he realized he couldn’t understand a thing.   “I lived in a lot of places since I was young. It’s because of my father’s job. I lived in the States, Japan, Korea, and now Germany. But I spent most of my teenage years in Seoul. And I’ve always liked learning something.” You said as you played with the hems of your jacket.   “You’re fluent in Japanese, too?” Hong Il replied and he looked genuinely amazed. Casually, he tapped Seung Hyun’s arm who was on the seat next to him. “Yah. You told me you would learn Japanese or English seriously this time. We’ve hit the jackpot with Y/N here!”   You and Hong Il chuckled at the same time. Seung Hyun, who had been silent the entire time, turned his head to the side and glanced at you from the corner of his eyes. He looked quite exhausted to be honest.   “If she would teach me, of course.” Hearing his deep voice in an enclosed space made your insides feel tingly.   “I can teach you!” You replied a bit enthusiastically.   Hong Il clapped his hands once as he exclaimed, “There you go! We’ll arrange something.”   You nodded and the rest of the ride was quiet. Understandably, they were both jetlagged and you did not want to make them feel any more miserable. Once you all arrived at the five-star hotel which was a walking distance from the famous cathedral, you were the one who assisted them in communicating with the staff. The manager would have his own room while Seung Hyun would have the entire penthouse. Oh, the perks of being rich and famous. You have heard from Eric that the other actors were also staying at the hotel. And the first thought that you had, “Would Choi Seung Hyun be able to make friends with them easily?”   Because you were sure it wouldn’t be easy to be friends with him… given with what you knew about him.   Eric had made a reservation in a restaurant nearby. All four of you sat around a table and chatted—with you already doing a great job being an interpreter as Eric and the two conversed about the movie. They would be meeting with the producers and director tomorrow morning and Seung Hyun would start filming in a few days after he rehearsed the stunt scenes. You translated during the whole dinner and you found the job extremely delightful though
