Chapter 10

Ephemeral

“Are you sure it’s okay for you to come with me later, hyung?”

Chanhee looked up from the cashier and saw Changjo standing in front of him, holding an empty plate. Chanhee took the plate from him and placed it in the sink behind him.

“I told you probably a thousand times already. It’s perfectly fine.” Chanhee laughed before handing the young waiter a cloth to use to clean the empty tables. Changjo just nodded in response before returning to work.

The café was a bit quiet, but there were still a few customers to serve. Chanhee decided it was best to not tell Changjo that Changhyun and his friends would be accompanying them to go shopping. He wasn’t exactly sure how close the teenagers were with each other.

As if on cue, the doors to the café opened, revealing Changhyun with Byunghun and Niel walking in behind him. Changhyun waved over at his brother before moving towards his usual table. Chanhee waved back before pretending to check on the cakes available in the café. He moved closer to the table and could hear Changjo speaking with his school mates.

“Are you guys here to study again?” Changjo asked as he prepared himself to take their order.

“No, we’re waiting for you. Hyung didn’t tell you?” Changhyun replied, glancing over to his brother that was behind the counter.

“What do you mean? I’m supposed to be going shopping with your brother.” Changjo turned his head and stared at the older waiter who seemed to be preoccupied with slicing a cake.

“We’re all going together. We need some clothes for the tournament coming up so Chanhee hyung volunteered to bring us along too. I hope you don’t mind.” Niel smiled, trying to be friendly with Changjo. They were merely acquaintances with each other, but Niel wanted to try being friends.

“Oh, okay. That makes sense, I guess. Our shift ends in about an hour, I hope you guys can wait.” Changjo nodded his head and started to take their orders. He felt a bit surprised at the sudden information, but he wasn’t bothered by it.

“You weren’t going to tell me beforehand?” Changjo asked as he started to prepare the orders from his schoolmates. Chanhee just laughed and shook his head.

“It wouldn’t be fun if I told you earlier. Don’t worry, Changjo. They’re just your classmates.” Chanhee laughed before preparing a glass of Changhyun’s special juice. This would be Chanhee’s first time meeting Byunghun since the time the high school student picked up Changhyun in the morning, so Chanhee wanted to seem as normal as possible.

There was nothing to hide now that Changhyun was aware of what happened.

“Here you go, kid.” Chanhee placed the juice in front of Changhyun and couldn’t help but laugh when his younger brother let out a shout of joy.

“Hyung, is it really okay for you to come with us later?” Niel asked and Chanhee couldn’t help but chuckle softly.

“Changjo kept asking me the same question earlier. Don’t worry! I don’t mind helping you guys out since Changhyun needed some new clothes anyway. If I let him go by himself, he would probably pick the worst outfit.” Chanhee laughed when he felt his brother punch him gently. The young teenager glared up at his brother before returning his attention to his precious juice.

“Just wait a bit. Changjo and I will be finished soon.” Chanhee smiled and left the table, a soft sigh escaping his lips as he walked away.

Even though Byunghun hadn’t said anything, Chanhee could feel his presence. The blonde remained silent when Chanhee was speaking, but Chanhee could still feel his gaze upon him.

The high school students waited patiently as Chanhee and Changjo finished up their shift at the café. It was fairly quiet in the café, so Niel and Changhyun decided to finish their homework.

“How do you think the tournament will go? I’m kind of nervous.” Changhyun said as he stared down at his algebra homework.

“It’s going to be our first tournament outside of Seoul. I wonder if we’re even good enough.” Byunghun replied.

“I think we’ll be fine. We’re the only school from Seoul to even qualify for the tournament!” Niel exclaimed as he reached over to grab Changhyun’s juice, intending to have a sip. Changhyun whined softly, but let Niel try some of the juice.

The three continued to chat by themselves as an hour went by. Changjo and Chanhee changed out of their work uniform before joining the soccer players at the table.

“Do any of you have a car? Changjo didn’t drive to work today so we don’t have a ride.” Chanhee asked as he checked the time on his phone. It was still early in the afternoon, so the shop would still be open.

“I drove here today. I have enough room for all of us in my car.” Byunghun replied, looking right at Chanhee. The brunette smiled in his direction and nodded his head, causing the blond to blush slightly. Changhyun grinned when he noticed his teammate’s reaction.

“Let’s get going before the shop closes for the day.” Chanhee said, reaching a hand over to mess up Changhyun’s hair.

As the group left the café, Niel couldn’t help but notice how quiet Changjo was. They rarely spoke to each other, but Niel was willing to have a conversation with him.

“How long have you been working at this café, Changjo?” Niel asked as he walked next to the young waiter.

Changjo blinked in surprise when he heard Niel speaking to him. Even though they shared a few classes together, they definitely weren’t that close.

“Maybe for a few months now. I started last year when they were hiring, but Chanhee hyung has been here much longer than I have.” Changjo replied, staring over at the older brunette.

“Isn’t it hard managing both school and work?” Niel asked as they approached Byunghun’s car. Changjo simply shook his head.

“Isn’t it hard managing both school and soccer? It’s the same for me.”

Byunghun unlocked the doors once they finally reached his car and waited for everyone to enter. Changhyun immediately climbed into the backseat, already knowing who would take the front seat.

“Niel, shouldn’t you sit in the front? You always complain about your legs feeling cramped when you sit in the back.” Changhyun asked, feeling a bit surprised when his teammate sat next to him.

“Shouldn’t Chanhee hyung be the one in the front? He’s the only one that knows where the shop is.” Niel said, watching as Changjo took the seat on the other side of Changhyun.

“Looks like I’m in the front.” Chanhee laughed and entered the car, sitting in the passenger seat.

“Don’t forget your seatbelt.” Byunghun reminded him as he started the car. Chanhee merely nodded his head before putting on his seatbelt.

“So where’s this shop that you recommend?” Byunghun asked as he started driving out of the café’s parking lot.

“Drive towards downtown. It’s in that direction, but it’s not that far.” Chanhee replied, glancing at the driving blonde.

Meanwhile in the backseat, Changhyun was stuck between two of the tallest people he knew. He couldn’t really move around a lot, so he just let his hands rest in his lap.

“You okay there, Ricky? You seem like you’re cramped.” Changjo asked when he noticed how uncomfortable the soccer player was.

“I’m fine. I’ve just never been stuck in the middle seat before.” Changhyun replied, looking over at Changjo. The waiter chuckled before taking out his phone.

“By the way, you never replied to my text about that one project! I had to ask someone else for help.” Changjo pouted his lips slightly, as if he was complaining. Changhyun blushed and gently punched Changjo’s shoulder.

“I told you to stop asking me for help all the time! It’s not my fault you weren’t paying attention in class.”

“Changhyun. Be nice.” Chanhee’s voice called from the front seat, causing both Byunghun and Niel to laugh.

“Ricky is always so feisty.” Byunghun said as he kept his eyes on the road. Even though Chanhee was sitting right next to him, he had to make sure to drive safely.

“He’s worse at home. He can be so stubborn sometimes too, so I hate arguing with him.” Chanhee said as he stared out of the window. He couldn’t bring himself to take another glance at Byunghun.

“Imagine practicing with him. He can get really violent on the field. He almost broke my leg one time, but luckily I avoided his hit.” Byunghun laughed as he recalled the memory.

They were both freshmen and trying out for the team. The drill was to go one-on-one and try to steal the ball away from each other. Byunghun had done a good job at keeping Changhyun away for about a minute, until Changhyun decided to nearly tackle him.

“He’s always been a bit reckless. He’s the complete opposite of me.” Chanhee mumbled, but Byunghun had managed to hear him.

Their conversation was unheard by the three teenagers in the backseat that were preoccupied with their own chat.

“Yeah, I noticed that you’re calmer and more mature compared to Ricky. I wonder why.” Byunghun said, stopping the car once they reached a red stop light.

“Well, I am the older brother. I’d like to think that that’s the reason I’m mature.” Chanhee chuckled and turned to look at Byunghun. His eyes widened when he realized that Byunghun was staring right at him. Time seemed to stop as the two made eye contact with one another. Chanhee reluctantly pulled his gaze away, a slight blush on his cheeks appearing as he looked out the window.

“Make a left at the next stop light.”
