Seventh Game
Endless GameWhen she arrived at school that Monday, Dia was greeted excitedly by her friends. After weeks of being bandaged, they had finally been removed early in the morning.
“You’re healed! Well mostly! It still looks a bit bruised though,” Hee-Jin exclaimed.
“At least I can see with two eyes again,” Dia replied.
“You’re going to shoot again, aren’t you?” Hoya asked her and the girl’s smile widened.
“Of course.”
“Are you sure that’s wise?” Hee-Jin asked carefully.
“I’m sure it’s not. But it’s been waaaaay too long.”
“It hasn’t been that long. You should take better care of yourself,” Hoya commented.
“Yes dad,” Dia replied dryly. “Let’s go inside.”
“Dad?” Hoya muttered in disbelief.
As she entered the school, Dia bumped into Sehun. He frowned as he looked her up and down.
“Even without bandages you can’t look where you walk? You should have kept them on, it looked better anyway.”
“At least I wouldn’t have to look at you then,” she replied, rolling her eyes.
“Would have been better for the both of us, then.”
“Dia, let’s just go? No use talking to him,” Hee-jin urged.
“You’re right. Let’s go.”
---
“You are definitely not shooting today.”
“But oppa! The bandages are gone, so it’s fine,” Dia pouted, but Donghyun shook his head.
“It is not fine. You’re still hurt, it’s still bruised and you should take better care of yourself.”
“Don’t be like that! I want to shoot again, it’s been so long.”
“It hasn’t even been that long.”
“It ha-as, just let me, please?” She whined. Now she finally could see depth again, she wanted to shoot her bow again, because there was nothing she liked better.
“I already said no.”
“Please? Please? Please?”
“Oh just shut up,” Donghyun scolded her with a smile. He knew the girl loved archery like nothing else, but he wasn’t going to give in.
“That’s a whole new side of you, Dia,” one of her classmates commented as she walked onto the archery range.
“It’s just because I want to shoot,” she pouted, making the girl laugh.
“That’s why you’re the best co-captain. But still, you should rest more. Listen to our captain.”
Dia scowled and folded her arms.
“But I don’t wanna listen.”
“You’re really acting like a little kid right now. If you don’t stop that, the first years are going to see you like this. They’ll never listen to you then,” Donghyun warned her.
“Alright, alright… I’ll be watching over the first years then… Again.”
---
“This weekend there’s this exhibition of the Photography club…” Dia started hesitantly while she, Hoya, Hee-Jin, Xiumin and Woohyun were eating lunch together.
“So?” Woohyun asked.
“She obviously wants to go,” Hee-Jin commented.
“You want us to join you?” Hoya asked.
“Why doesn’t she just say that then,” Xiumin muttered.
“Do you want to go?” Dia asked her friends. “If you don’t want to, then I’ll go by myself.”
“I’ll go!” Hoya instantly replied.
“We’ll go too, right oppa,” Hee-Jin said, looking at her boyfriend.
“Sure, it could be fun, I guess.”
“I’m not interested, but you guys have fun,” Woohyun stated.
“I want to go after club practise on Saturday… Is that okay?” Dia asked.
“You want to go as soon as possible~” Hee-Jin teased, causing Dia to blush.
“It’s fine by me,” Hoya quickly stated. “My club activities are also in the morning.”
“So are mine,” Xiumin agreed.
“Then it’s decided! Let’s all meet in front of the school,” Hee-Jin exclaimed. She was getting more and more excited.
“Oh, but if you go straight from archery practise, shouldn’t you shower? And you can’t wear cute clothes then…”
“It’s just an exhibition right? Those pictures won’t care,” Xiumin muttered.
“But she’s not going for the pictures~”
---
“I’m sorry I’m late, I had to clean up after our first years,” Dia apologized when she reached her friends. Hoya, Hee-Jin and Xiumin were already waiting for her at the entrance of the school.
“Why are you wearing sport clothes. I told you to wear something cute, right?” Hee-Jin complained.
“How can I shoot in a dress? I finally got to shoot again, I can’t ruin that.”
“Who’d go to a sport club in a dress?” Xiumin muttered.
“It’s not for archery, it’s for now. You could’ve changed after practise.
“I would have been even later then. It’s fine, it’s fine, let’s just go inside?”
“Someone is excited,” Hoya commented.
“Of course I am. I told you I wanted to go here, right?”
“Yes, because you are really into pictures~” Hee-Jin teased.
“If she wasn’t why would she even go here?” Xiumin complained. “let’s just head inside?”
“Yes, let’s!”
“I wonder where Myungsoo is, did he tell you anything?” Hee-Jin asked her friend. Dia shook her head.
“Nothing at all. But then again, I never told him I was going to come either. Or rather, we don’t really talk.”
“You don’t? I thought things were going well.”
“Not that well apparently,” Hoya commented.
“Oh shut up,” Dia mumbled. Almost immediately after they had entered the exhibition area, Xiumin and Hee-Jin disappeared into their own world, looking at the pictures together and smiling, looking like the perfect couple on a perfect date.
“It almost feels like a double date like this,” Hoya said half-jokingly.
“You think so?” Dia looked at him in surprise. “I don’t really think it does.”
“I mean, look at them, totally like they are on a date, right?” Hoya pointed at Hee-Jin and Xiumin and Dia could only nod.
“They do. But we don’t, right?”
“I guess we don’t…” he muttered, looking away from her. She was so dense at times. Looking away from the girl who was walking next to him made him notice something else. The pictures they were slowly walking towards were showing a familiar face.
“That bastard.” He dashed off towards the pictures, and sure enough; there were pictures of Dia everywhere. He had finally found the stalker! And before anyone had noticed something was happening, Hoya had Myungsoo pinned against the wall, glaring at him.
“What are you doing? Let him go now!” Dia exclaimed trying to pull Hoya of her long-time crush.
“But he took pictures of you…”
“Of course he did. I modelled for him. Why are you freaking out like this?”
When these words sunk in, Hoya slowly released Myungsoo. But he didn’t stop glaring at him. He still did not trust him at all. With a stalker being around taking pictures of Dia was obviously suspicious.
“She was my model yes. But you don’t have to worry about it, they were just pictures, nothing more,” Myungsoo said with a shrug. He was quite shaken up, but didn’t want the boy in front of him to know. For a second there was hurt visible in Dia’s eyes, but then she smiled.
“Yes, they were just pictures,” Dia agreed quietly. “And even if they weren’t, it has nothing to do with you, has it?”
“It does have something to do with me,” Hoya retorted.
“You’re my friend, not my father.” Dia said coldly before quickly walking away. She knew she was being unfair to her friend. She knew the only reason she was lashing out at him was because Myungsoo’s words had hurt her. But she couldn’t help it.
“Wait!” Hoya yelled as he rushed after her, but she didn’t even look back.
“Well that was a mess,” Hee-Jin muttered.
“Are you okay?” Xiumin asked the photographer.
“I’m fine.”
“Don’t you want to go after her?” Hee-Jin asked.
“Why would I do that?” He wasn’t allowed to leave the exhibition anyway. “Besides, her boyfriend’s already going after her.”
“Hoya’s not her boyfriend. Although he wants to be,” Hee-Jin said. “But if you don’t want to, then you shouldn’t. The pictures look good, she looks really happy.”
“She does,” Myungsoo agreed.
“Shall we go see the rest of the exhibition? Or do you want to go after Hoya and Dia?” Xiumin asked his girlfriend.
“We should probably give them time to talk it out,” the girl said softly. She was worried, but she felt like that would be best.
---
“I figured you’d be here.”
Dia didn’t react to Hoya’s voice and only when he sat down next to her did she look up.
“I’m sorry.” They both said it at the same time.
“Why are you sorry?” Hoya asked her surprised.
“I was just… lashing out at you, being unreasonable. You were going too far, but so was I.”
“Yeah, I was going too far as well. I didn’t know you had modelled for him… So I thought he was the stalker.”
“But he wasn’t.”
“He could still be.”
“I don’t think so. I was just his model. You heard him. Nothing else.”
“That’s why you’re sad now?” he asked her softly.
“I guess. I was just being stupid I guess, fooling myself into thinking it was like a date. Thinking that maybe I had a chance with him. But I was the only one thinking that. It’s just…”
“It’s fine. You’ll be fine. You’re not stupid at all,” Hoya said and softly pulled her against him in a hug. “I’m sorry.”
“You know, it’s actually been a while since the stalker messaged me. Not since the karaoke day… So two weeks. Maybe it has finally stopped. So you can stop suspecting everyone?”
“Are you just saying that so I’ll relax?”
“You can check my phone if you want to? But you can’t keep pushing people against walls.”
“Hey, this was the first time I did that.”
“And the last, right?”
“And the last,” he reluctantly agreed. If he found the stalker, he would probably do much worse, though.
“Let’s get back to the exhibition. I’m fine now,” Dia commented, getting up.
“Alright, let’s go”
They joined Hee-Jin and Xiumin again at the exhibition and were soon looking at picture after picture.
“Are you alright?” Hee-Jin asked her friend, and Dia smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I was just overreacting.”
“The pictures Myungsoo took of you were pretty, though.”
“Yeah, they were okay. I saw them earlier.”
“You had another date?” Hee-Jin asked her and Dia shook her head.
“Just pictures, nothing more. That’s what he said just now right?”
Hee-Jin hugged her friend. Even though she was trying to act like she didn’t care, Hee-Jin knew better.
They had walked across most of the exhibition when Dia saw Myungsoo again.
“Are you okay?” he asked her gently.
“I’m fine, how is the exhibition going?” she replied.
Hoya had planned to go to the girl, but Hee-Jin stopped him.
“Let them talk. You’re just going to annoy her again.”
“It’s going well so far. What did you think of it?”
“It’s good. There are so many great pictures here.”
“Yeah, our club is pretty good. Want to go somewhere to celebrate later?” He said it so casually, almost like he didn’t mean it.
For a second Dia’s face lit up in happiness, before she remembered his words. She kept a smile on her face, but even Myungsoo could tell it wasn’t a genuine one.
“You don’t have to feel obligated, you know. Just because I modelled for these pictures… You don’t have to.”
“And if I wasn’t feeling obligated?” he asked her softly, not looking at her.
“What do you mean?” she looked at him in surprise. A spark of hope appeared in her heart but she was afraid it was her imagination running away with her again.
“What if I wanted to go somewhere with you?”
“Like… Like a date?” Dia muttered and he just nodded.
“I… I would really like that.”
“Meet me here at the end of the exhibition?” he suggested and Dia nodded. By now, they were both blushing.
She quickly turned around to hide her embarrassment and joined her friends again. Or at least, she had planned to, but she only spotted Xiumin.
“Where are the others?”
“Hee-Jin went to the bathroom. Hoya went to buy something to drink.” Her best friend’s boyfriend didn’t even look at her when he spoke.
“Alright, I guess I’ll just wait here.”
“Why? Go wait somewhere else,” Xiumin replied harshly.
“Eh? But won’t they come back here?”
“You really have no idea what you did, have you?”
“What I did? What do you mean?” Dia asked, looking at him in surprise. His glare was more than a little intimidating.
“Dia!! How did it go? Did you talk?” Hee-Jin’s voice broke the tense atmosphere. “Tell me, what did Myungsoo say?”
“We.. We have a date later,” the girl replied shyly.
“You have a date!?? Like an actual date? Omo, that’s amazing! Why aren’t you happier? No, you need to go home and change, you can’t go like this. We have to go right now!”
“Calm down, I’m fine like this! The exhibition ends in 20 minutes, my house is too far away to get back here on time. So no changing.”
“See! I told you you should have worn something better today,” Hee-Jin stated.
