Second Game

Endless Game

“What happened to your arm?” Hee-Jin exclaimed as her friend reached her at the school gates. Their summer uniform had short sleeves and Dia’s terribly bruised elbow was clearly visible.

“I.. got distracted,” she said, shrugging.

“That much? That’s not like you. What happened?” Hee-Jin asked her friend.

“What did you do to your arm?” Suddenly Hoya appeared. Dia sighed.

“When I was practicing yesterday someone send me texts and I got distracted, so I kind of… hit my elbow.”

“Did you go to a doctor?” Hoya started, but was interrupted by Hee-Jin.

“Who send the text? They distracted you? Was it Myungsoo?”

“I sure hope not,” Dia muttered and handed Hee-Jin her phone. Hee-Jin quickly got through the messages, showing each one to Hoya as well.

“This is so creepy!” Hee-Jin exclaimed.

“It’s probably nothing,” Dia said with a smile.

“I bet it’s that bastard Sehun. He’s always out to get you,” Hoya theorized.

“Why would he go to all that trouble? He’s been bullying me since elementary school, he’s not going to start texting me now, right?”

“I guess…” Hee-Jin was deep in thought. “Did you check the address against the list we were accidentally sent yesterday?”

“I did.” Dia nodded. “It wasn’t in it.”

“Already? That must have taken you hours!” Hoya was surprised.

“Nah, not that long,” Dia shook her head. Only five hours. It’s not even a big deal. I’m just overreacting anyway.

“You are so not going to the archery range by yourself today,” Hoya said decisively.

“I so am! I’m not giving up my practise time for a silly text message. It’s no big deal.”

“It is scary though, to think someone would be watching you,” Hee-Jin commented.

“I don’t have basketball practise yet, I’ll watch over you,” Hoya offered.

“I’m fine. You don’t have to. It’s nothing,” Dia turned to walk to her classroom. She appreciated that her friends were worried about her, but she really didn’t want to think about the messages anymore. It has stopped. It was just some sick joke, she tried to convince herself.

“I can’t leave you by yourself if there’s a crazy stalker, you know!” Hoya yelled after her, and he suddenly got hit on the head by Hee-Jin.

“Yah!”

“Don’t yah me! You are being way too obvious. You want her to find out you like her? You do know she likes Myungsoo right?” Hee-Jin warned him.

“She doesn’t even know him,” Hoya muttered. “And what if something happened to her?”

“I guess you’re right… You better not have send messages to be able to protect her,” Hee-Jin continued.

“Yah.” Hoya had now turned pale and his voice has lost the anger. “You can’t seriously be saying that.” He got quiet, hurt that his friend would think something like that.

“I’m sorry. I know you wouldn’t do anything to hurt her,” Hee-Jin gave Hoya a hug to apologise and they both entered the building. There they found Dia and Sehun arguing. Again.

“Your arm looks disgusting. You should cover it when you go out in public,” Sehun made a disgusted face and pointed at her bruised elbow. His friends laughed as he pointed it out.

“It’s just a bruise,” Dia commented, rolling her eyes.

“Just a bruise, she says,” Sehun snickered. “But then again, it’s not that much worse than the rest of you. Might as well keep everything under a bandage, Carrot top.”

Dia raised her hand to hit the bully in front of her, when the teacher walked in.

“Lucky,” she whispered to him as she walked towards her seat.

Classes passed and although Sehun seemed to have gotten a new eraser, he didn’t throw it at Dia today. Dia wasn’t exactly looking forward to lunch, as Hee-Jin wouldn’t be sitting with them, but it arrived sooner than she wished.

“I’m going to Xiumin now,” Hee-Jin stated as she got up. She seemed very excited.

“Have fun! And watch out for Woohyun!” Dia waved as her friend walked outside.

“Let’s just eat here. It’s stupid to claim a table when it’s just the two of us anyway.” Dia turned to Hoya.

“I guess. But then you can’t see Myungsoo,” Hoya reminded her.

“Good point. Let’s go sit outside. We can always sit on the grass or something,” Dia smiled as they got up and walked towards the grass.

“This way we can also watch over Hee-Jin,” Hoya smiled. They sat down together on the grass. Dia made sure she positioned herself in such a way that she could see both Hee-Jin and Myungsoo.

Hee-Jin had joined her boyfriend and gave him a hug, which caused his friends to cheer, and Xiumin to glare at them.

“Your girlfriend’s cute, Xiumin, she’s blushing and everything,” One of his friends told him, causing Hee-Jin to blush a bit more.

“I know,” Xiumin said smiling proudly. “She’s the best.”

“If she was a vegetable she'd be a cute-cumber,” Woohyun said smiling, causing Xiumin to kick him under the table.

“What, that wasn’t that bad,” Woohyun pouted.

“I’m sure you can do worse, yes,” Xiumin rolled his eyes and put an arm around Hee-Jin shoulder.

“But don…” Before he could finish his sentence, Woohyun had started again:

“Sha-la-la-la-la-la don’t be scared, I’ve got the moves prepared, you want to kiss me, girl.” Once again, this earned him a kick under the table.

“No matter how much I like Disney, I definitely don’t.” Hee-Jin stated shaking her head.

“Oh! She got you there,” the group of boys once again laughed and cheered.

“Xiumin only, I guess,” Woohyun shrugged. “Guess I have to settle for one of your friends.”

“You can have Hoya?” Hee-Jin suggested with a smile, which caused the other boys to laugh and Xiumin to look at her proudly. He was so happy she was his girlfriend.

Dia and Hoya weren’t speaking much. All Dia did was watch Myungsoo and eat, occasionally glancing over at Hee-Jin. Hoya was watching her, though he told himself it was just because there was a stalker bothering her.

School past quickly, and Dia didn’t receive any new messages. So she tried her best to convince Hoya that he really did not need to come to the archery range with her.

“I’ll be fine. Why are you overreacting like this? It’s not like it’s you who is getting weird texts!” she tried to convince him, but he wouldn’t budge.

“Just take him, and be careful,” Hee-Jin then stated. She thought Hoya was overreacting too, but if he could keep her friend safe, he would have to do. But as Dia had begun to expect, no messages appeared while she was at the archery range either.

“See? Nothing? It was just a onetime thing,” she smiled at Hoya, showing him she wasn’t scared. In fact, the day had been so normal it had been boring.

“All right, all right, you were right. Maybe I was overreacting,” he admitted and they said goodbye to go home.

Bzz Bzz. Her phone. Hoya had just turned the corner, so it wouldn’t be him. Maybe Hee-Jin?

Felt safe having a bodyguard with you?

She felt the blood drain from her face. Whoever was sending these text he or she had been watching her again, choosing the exact time she was alone to send a message. Block. That should do it. I’m not going to let a stupid text message scare me. But right away her phone buzzed again.

I told you, you can run, but you can’t hide.

How? She looked at her phone in confusion for a second, then noticed the sender had simply used another address. So blocking is no option, I guess. She sighed and looked around. The streets were empty and slowly getting dark. I better get home soon. If I disappear at night, no-one would notice till tomorrow.

Dia had been living in her own apartment for a few years, ever since starting junior high. Her mother had moved back to England  before that and her father couldn’t bear to look at her after that. At least he paid the rent of her apartment. She hurried home, locking the door behind her. At least I’m safe here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Did you get any messages yesterday?” Hee-Jin asked the next day during lunch break. Today, she and Xiumin sat with her friends again.

“None at all,” Hoya proclaimed proudly, as if he had been personally responsible. Looking at him being proud like that, Dia couldn’t bear to tell him he was wrong. She didn’t have to doubt her decision long, as all of a sudden Donghyun, the archery captain walked up to them.

“We need to talk.” His face was much more serious than Dia was used to and she immediately got up.

“What’s wrong?” She asked him, the worry seeping through into her voice.

“Let’s go,” he said and they walked to a more quiet place.

“What is it?” Dia was now really getting worried.

“I happen to hear, well, I’m not sure how to say this,” Donghyun started.

“Oppa, just say it,” Dia tried to encourage him.

“Well, all right. I heard you took a boy with you to the archery range. That was definitely not why I gave you the key. It’s a place for practise not for.. dates. Now I’m wondering if I even made the right choice to make you co-captain,” he sighed as he was done speaking.

“Oppa! You can’t be serious!” Dia was seriously shocked by Donghyun’s outburst. “I practise more than anyone, except maybe for you. And I wouldn’t go on a date at the archery range. I wanted the key to practise, nothing more. It’s just that Hoya suddenly got overprotective when he heard I was getting strange messages.” She rambled.

“Strange messages?” Donghyun sounded interested.

“Just someone who says he watches me, it’s no big deal,” Dia figured that if she kept saying that, she could make herself believe it.

“Just watch out, then.” Donghyun turned his back on her and walked back to his friends, so Dia decided to do the same. Running right into Myungsoo as she turned around. As always, he had a camera in front of his face, making pictures of whatever he saw. Click.

“You’re shocked face is precious,” Myungsoo said with a smile as he suddenly took the picture.

“Thanks, I guess?” Dia said hesitantly. “And sorry for walking into you.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Myungsoo smiled again. “The shot it gave me was priceless. Besides, it seemed like the conversation you had was pretty heavy.”

Was he watching me?

“Just a misunderstanding, it was no big deal,” Dia said with a soft smile. Finally was she talking with her crush of more than a year, and she didn’t know what to say at all.

“If the picture is developed, I’ll come and show you,” once again the boy smiled and left. And for the second time that break, a boy just walked out on her, before she even had the chance to say anything.

After class, Hoya once again followed her to the archery range.

“I told you I am fine! Yesterday was fine too, right?” She rolled her eyes as he stubbornly kept following her.

Arriving at the range, she noticed Donghyun readying his bow.

“Why are you here?” she asked surprised.

“You can go now,” Donghyun turned to Hoya, ignoring Dia’s question. “The archery range is off-limits to non-club members. If you are worried about the weird messages or whatever, I’ll be here, and she’ll be fine.”

“Take care,” was all Hoya said as he walked away sulking. Near the school gates he found Hee-Jin waiting for him.

“No date today?” Hoya asked his friend sounding a bit harsh.

“It’s not like we go on dates every day!” Hee-Jin protested. “Did you finally stop becoming a second stalker? The harder you push, the harder she will run away, you know. Especially now she has finally spoken to Myungsoo.”

“Took her long enough,” Hoya muttered.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Donghyun had taken her home that night, even though Dia had insisted she was fine by herself.

“If you are being harassed, I’m not letting you walk alone to your house,” was all he had said, and personally brought her to her front door.

“Thanks,” she said with a smile. She had barely closed the door when another message arrived.

Switched Bodyguards?

She rolled her eyes. It’s just a message. It doesn’t mean anything.

She ignored the message and went on, eating, showering. Just as she turned off the light and laid down in her bed, her phone buzzed once more.

Good night.

He has got great timing though. Dia thought as she fell asleep. It was only when the next two days, just as she laid down in bed, at two very different times of the night, she got the same message, she realised that he couldn’t be that lucky.

He watches me at home too.

That weekend Dia locked herself up in her room. She tried to look through all windows and see if someone was watching her. But she never saw anyone. The messages kept coming.

That fish looks good. Next time share some.

Nice dress, it suits you.

If you keep looking out of the window, you’re going to make me think you want to see me.

Next time, let’s shower together.

The content of the messages itself wasn’t even that creepy. They were mostly compliments, sometimes a tad lewd, but never that bad as a whole. It’s only freaky because he knows whatever I am doing all the time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That Monday, Dia arrived at morning practise feeling tired. She had barely slept, trying to figure out how someone had spied on her.

“You look terrible” Donghyun greeted her.

“Good morning to you too, Oppa. You know I’m not a morning person.” She was too tired to even try and look pissed off.

“This is a new record though. You better be awake after school, because we want as many first-years to join as we can.”

“I know,” she sighed. She wasn’t feeling up to a newbie introduction today. Her shots were sloppy because she was too tired, making her frustrated. By the time she got to her first class she looked as if she hated the whole world, and she did.

“Goo-… what happened?” Hee-Jin started.

“Just… tired,” Dia said, laying her head down on her table, almost instantly falling asleep. Hee-Jin did wake her during third period, so she could mindlessly stare at Myungsoo. Just ten minutes later, she felt her phone vibrate.

Who are you staring at?

She glanced out of the window, then looked through her classroom. The only one looking at her was Hee-Jin and that was probably just because Dia had suddenly gotten a text. She couldn’t notice anyone holding a phone either. She bit her lip, then rested her head in her arms. I guess I am going to have to get used to this. It’s just texts, no big deal. She kept repeating it in her head, eventually falling asleep again. She slept through lunch break, her two friends staying with her to make sure she was okay, and so Sehun wouldn’t draw on her face. She only woke when school had ended, feeling a lot better.

“You should sleep more,” Hee-Jin commented. “How can you even be this tired?”

“Just… couldn’t fall asleep,” Dia said hesitantly. It wasn’t technically a lie. And she didn’t want her friends to worry, again.

“I need to go to practise, the first years are coming for their first practise,” she then explained as she got up. “Sorry I was no fun today!”

“I bet she still gets the texts, but doesn’t want to worry us,” Hee-Jin commented as she watched her best friend walk away.

“Sounds like something she’d do. But how can we help her?” Hoya replied.

“I don’t know yet.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dia had rushed and arrived at the archery range only a little after Donghyun. Together they prepared the practise bows and ran through what they wanted to say. They were almost done when the new first years appeared. As Donghyun started his introduction speech, Dia noticed a familiar face in the modest crowd. It was the ‘cute boy’ from the first day.

“So you like archery too?” She asked him as he prepared his protective gear.

“I haven’t actually done it yet,” Minwoo admitted with a shy smile. “But it seems like fun. And it seems like a good way to scare bullies off,” he then added a bit embarrassed. “I didn’t know you were in this club, Noona.”

“I’m sure you will like it once you get the hang of it. It’s definitely one of my favourite things to do,” she smiled at the shy boy in front of her. Although it doesn’t scare off bullies, I’m afraid.

“Noona?”

“Hnn?” She looked up to see Minwoo point at her hair, before slowly going through it with his hand.

“You have something in your hair,” Minwoo showed her a piece of eraser. That idiot of a Sehun again? Dia wondered. What can be fun about throwing erasers at someone who is sleeping.

Dia enjoyed teaching the first years how to use their bows. It seemed like many of the girls were just there to watch Minwoo, but Dia managed to get a few of them interested. There was nothing more fun than seeing their eyes lit up as they hit the target.

“You need to keep your elbow up, like this,” she explained to Minwoo, when he failed to hit the target.

“Like this?” Minwoo looked at her questioningly.

“A little more, look,” Once again she demonstrated it, this time using his bow, and shooting her arrow straight through the middle of the target.

“Woa! You make it seem so easy.” Minwoo started. He then reached out to her bruise. “Did you get this from archery?” He looked shocked that something like that could happen. Dia yelped as he touched her bruise. It had been almost a week, but even Minwoo’s soft touch almost brought tears to her eyes. I hit myself good.

“It is. But don’t worry. Hardly anyone hits themself there. Usually the string gets your wrist, which is why we have a protector there,” she convinced the boy.

“It looks painful,” he noted. Dia really didn’t want her bruise to scare off the first years, who were too focussed on Minwoo to miss their conversation.

“It’s no big deal,”Dia smiled, hoping she was convincing enough. Together with the other members of her club she tried to convince the first years it really was fun and not dangerous at all. It was the first time in a few days Dia felt this happy and relaxed.

“I hope you didn’t scare them off with your foreignness and your bruises,” Donghyun joked as they were clearing up the training bows. “I bet most of them never even saw your hair colour before.”

“Seriously?” Dia rolled her eyes. “Why is it that whenever something happens, people blame it on my hair. Beside, I’m pretty sure they would sooner be scared of you. Who dyes his hair blue-green? What kind of colour is that?”

“Maybe I just dyed it so your hair wouldn’t stand out so much,” Donghyun said boldly.

“Doubt it. I bet you just like it. Now all we can do is hope that people won’t think you need weird coloured hair to join the archery club,” Dia said with a smile, causing Donghyun to laugh.

“Agreed. But then, we would definitely have that rainbow kid join us. He’s the top weird haired person of our school.”

Dia laughed as well and collected her things. She was glad she finally had been able to relax for a while. That didn’t last long, however. As she looked at her phone she noticed she had a text. Instead of a message, this time she had received a picture. More accurately, a picture of her, sleeping in the classroom.

What? Even pictures now? So what! I already know you are watching me all the time. At least this means maybe Hee-Jin or Hoya saw someone.

“You okay?”

It was only at that moment she noticed Donghyun look at her questioningly.

“I’m fine,” she said with a smile. “Let’s hope many first years will join us.”

“I’ll walk you home,” he didn’t ask her anything and instead they talked about trivial stuff. Dia felt grateful. He had probably seen the shock on her face when she saw the picture. He knew she was being harassed and she was glad he was looking out for her, like a good Oppa.

She was tired, even after sleeping most of the day and for the first time in days she fell asleep quickly, even after receiving a good night text. Maybe she was getting used to it.

Bzz bzz she was awoken by her phone, just minutes before her alarm clock was supposed to ring. Is it a good morning text this time? It wasn’t. It was another picture of her sleeping. Except this time, she wasn’t in the classroom. It was a picture of her, sleeping in her own bed, at home.

Chapter 17: Oh, my goodness! I loved this story so much! One of the best fanfics I've ever read. I actually finished this in maybe like four hours. That is not common for me with a lengthy story. You did really good with developing the characters. And you did make it scary enough. If I was getting texts that let me know someone knew what I was doing, that would scare the crap out of me. After Sehun started acting concerned about Dia, I really started to like him :) Guys really will do mean things just to get your attention. Negative or positive, it's still attention and that's what they crave. I went back and forth about who the stalker could be, but I did guess Minwoo in the next to the last chapter lol. Anyhow, amazing job!!!

There is he!!! myungsoo!! awwww noooo hes taking it hard although thats to be expected with the breakup all of a sudden >.<
arrghhh sehun just admit you're a nice person and only bully for whatever reason you have!!! I still wonder why he started to bully her when they were such good friends and it's clearly he remembers and possibly wants it back!!!! at least that's my opinion, I'm getting passionate about this idea xD
ohmygosh i was sure sehun was not the stalker but looking at it now, what if he did it to become friends with her again in some twisted way?
at least now i think hoya is not the stalker because in the end he only hurt himself somehow by confirming her non love for him, but he may have done something in the stalker's name...? hmmmmm
Again... POOR hOYA T^T
hmmmm donghyun's classroom is close... but i can't remember any stalker incidents in the archery room for now so maybe that was just extra conversation instead of a hint... you make me doubt everything!!!! argghhhh
Lolll xD Dia!!! this time you can't whine if it's about the tournament~ heheheh
I'm so glad she has archery to vent? is that the word? uitlaatklep
