Fifth Game
Endless GameWhen Dia hadn’t arrived at school without notifying anyone, Hoya and Hee-Jin had gotten worried.
“We have to go check up on her, what if the stalker did anything?” Hoya decided.
“But we’re not allowed to leave school. Maybe she’s ill? But she would let us know,” Hee-Jin rambled.
“We have to go. What if something happened to her? If you don’t want to go, just give me your key.”
“I’m coming too!” Hee-Jin said decisively. “You’re not the only one who cares about her!”
During lunch break, they both rushed towards Dia’s house, only to find it surrounded by police cars and see an ambulance racing away.
“What happened?” Hoya asked one of the bystanders, Hee-Jin already getting teary-eyed, her imagination scaring her.
“A foreign girl was just brought to the hospital. Someone broke in and attacked her, or something like that,” the man explained.
“Foreign girl? It must be Dia! Ohmygosh, what happened to her?”
“It must be the stalker again. We really need to find out who it is,” Hoya muttered.
“We need to find out if Dia’s okay first!” Hee-Jin complained.
“What hospital is she in?” Hoya interrogated the man, who just shook his head. He didn’t know.
---------------
When Dia woke up, she was severely disorientated. It took her a while to realise she was in a hospital room. Her head was bandaged, one of her eyes covered and as she touched it, she felt a sharp pain. Looking at the nightstand, a bouquet of flowers was standing in a vase. It was already well in the afternoon, she realised.
“Ah, you’re awake?” A nurse said as she entered the room. Dia just nodded, instantly regretting it when she got dizzy.
“You’ve got a concussion dear, take it easy,” the nurse said softly.
“Did you… call my father?” the girl asked the nurse, eyeing the flowers.
“We did. He said you should send the bill, and he’d pay it,” the nurse said, sounding apologetic.
Dia sighed, she should have known that would have been his reaction.
“Where is my phone? I have to let my friends know where I am,” she continued, and realised Donghyun would probably be angry with her for not showing up to practise without letting him know.
“Oh, yes, it’s in the drawer of the nightstand. It was lying close to you, so the paramedics used it to call your father,” the nurse explained. “Take it easy, okay? You’ll have to stay at least today, longer if there is any brain damage.”
“Thanks,” Dia replied, not wanting to nod again. When the nurse left, she reached into the drawer. Her phone had a bunch of missed messages, from both Hee-Jin and Hoya, who seemed really worried.
“Why aren’t you at school yet?”
“Did you oversleep? Make sure to eat!”
“Yah! You better tell us which hospital you’re in asap.”
“Are you okay?”
“Why aren’t you answering?”
“Is it that bad?”
“Just reply”
“Please”
“Where are you? Why aren’t you here yet?”
A smile appeared on her lips as at least her friends were worried and she hurriedly texted them back in which hospital she was and that she really was fine. She send an apology to Donghyun for not being there. When she scrolled through the messages, the message she was pretty sure she had been reading before losing consciousness was gone.
I did get a text, right? But if it’s not there… Are my memories messed up?
She didn’t get much time to wonder about the missing text message, because before she knew it Hee-Jin and Hoya were entering her room.
“Ohmygosh! I was so worried!” Hee-Jin exclaimed.
“Don’t ever scare us again!” Hoya added.
“I didn’t do it because I wanted to, you know,” Dia shook her head, instantly regretting.
“Does it hurt? Don’t move so much, just rest!” her best friend said, a worried expression on her face.
“Was it the stalker?” Hoya asked, eyes flaming.
“How should I know? I’m not even sure what happened,” Dia sighed.
The nurse shooed them from the room pretty quickly, stating the girl had to rest more. This was pretty difficult, as the nurse had to check her pupils every hour to make sure there would be no permanent damage. She was asked to stay another day, but declined. It was afternoon when she left, but Dia went straight to school. She couldn’t miss practise again, being the co-captain. She knew she would be unable to shoot, especially with one eye blocked, but she could still watch the first years.
“What are you doing here?”Donghyun asked in shock.
“I’m on time, right?” she asked, seeing none of the other members yet.
“That’s not what I meant. Why are you here, when you should be resting in bed?”
“I was cleared to leave the hospital,” she said simply.
“Don’t be stupid. You should rest properly.”
“Oppa, at least let me watch the first years? The co-captain can’t be absent two days in one week right?”
Donghyun sighed. He knew it was one of the rules of being captain. If you could be there, you had to.
“Why do you do this to yourself?” he muttered, worry in his eyes.
“Don’t worry oppa, I’m strong,” she smiled.
“You don’t look it, with those bandages,” he retorted, but when the first members started to appear, he had to continue preparing everything.
“Unni, what happened?” Some girls asked concerned.
“It’s nothing, just a little fall,” she smiled again, not wanting them to worry.
“It looks like it really hurts, noona. You should be more careful,” Minwoo said.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. Instead of talking to me, you should be practising,” Dia said, and sighed from relief when they finally stopped asking her questions. Being looked at weirdly was something she was used to, but when even those she knew kept gawking at her, it made her really uncomfortable.
Once practise was over, Donghyun walked towards her.
“I’m walking you home again, okay? I want to know what happened. And don’t tell me you fell, I don’t believe that,” he said. Dia smiled, and sat down again, waiting for him to finish putting all the bows of the first years away.
---------------
When Dia entered the classroom the next day, the first thing she heard was Sehun.
“What happened to you? Did you take my advice and finally decide to hide your face?” he sneered.
“Something like that,” Dia replied simply, before sitting down at her seat. When Hee-Jin entered the classroom, she immediately dashed towards her friend.
“Are you sure you can be in class again? Shouldn’t you rest?” the girl asked Dia, clearly worried.
“I’ll be fine. I already missed two days.”
“Yah! Why are you here?” Hoya complained as he entered the classroom.
“I’m fine, really,” Dia said, once again.
“You don’t look fine though,” the guy said once he had joined the two girls.
“I can’t skip school after going to practise yesterday now, can I,” Dia sighed.
“You did what!? Why aren’t you properly resting and healing?”
“Seriously, Hoya, none of your business. Besides, I am co-captain.”
“He is right, though, you should rest.”
“Do we have to tie you down for you to rest?’ Hoya muttered as he walked towards his own seat.
It didn’t take long for class to start after that. Dia noticed Sehun kept looking at her curiously, which kind of freaked her out after everything that had happened the past few weeks.
---------------
“I was looking for you,” Dia heard as she was walking through the corridors to the archery range. She turned around only to see Myungsoo standing there, with a shocked face.
“What happened?” he asked.
“Fell down,” Dia shrugged.
“You really should be more careful.” He muttered.
“Why? Afraid you will lose your model?” Dia asked. She was getting annoyed with everyone telling her what she should do. She had been perfectly fine before this stalker incident. Dia flinched when Myungsoo softly touched her bandage.
“Does it hurt that bad? And to answer your question, no, not because of that. No matter how hurt you are, even if you get a scar, I’m sure you’ll be pretty enough to model for me.”
His words made her blush and when he noticed that, Myungsoo smiled.
“Be careful, I don’t like seeing you hurt,” he said and turned to walk away.
“Why where you looking for me?” Dia asked.
“Oh, right. I have the pictures finished. Do you want to go through them together sometime?”
Dia nodded happily.
“When would be good? You have club activities now, right?”
Once again Dia nodded.
“How about after? We could go for dinner again?” she then suggested.
“Sure, but I’m not paying again,”Myungsoo said with a grin. “Come get me at the photography club once you’re done.” With that, he walked away.
“You’re la-“ Donghyun started, but his stern look softened when he saw her.
“You really should rest, instead of insisting on coming to practise,” he sighed, shaking his head.
“Oppa, don’t be like that,” Dia sighed as well. “Why does everyone keep telling me what I should do today.”
“We’re just worried.”
“Well, don’t be,” Dia replied softly. She sat down and while Donghyun was setting up the equipment, fell asleep. The day had been more tiring then she had expected, and her head was killing her. Donghyun smiled when he noticed her and put his vest over the girl to keep her warm.
“She really should have stayed home and rested,” he muttered. “Always pretending to be so tough.”
When practise was over, he softly shook the sleeping girl awake.
“Did I fall asleep? I’m so sorry oppa! Did the first years arrive already?” the girl looked horrified at the thought, and Donghyun almost felt bad for not waking her earlier. Almost. But when he looked at her bandages he knew he’d done the right thing.
“They did. Actually practise is over. Shall I walk you home?”
“Why didn’t you wake me?” Dia pouted.
“Sorry. I figured you needed your rest. Besides, the first years were all saying how cute you looked. And everyone else felt it was better to let you rest, so you’d heal properly.”
“You still should have woken me,” the girl looked so sad Donghyun really did start to feel bad.
“I’m sorry. Maybe I should have,” he patted the girl on her back. “Now, let’s go home, alright?”
“You don’t have to walk me home today,” Dia muttered, walking off by herself before Donghyun could react.
“I made her angry,” he sighed. He honestly believed he had done nothing wrong. She shouldn’t even be at school but properly heal first. She was just too stubborn.
---------------
Dia took a deep breath before knocking the door leading to the clubroom of the Photography club.
“Yes?” she heard a familiar voice say and she hesitantly opened the door.
Myungsoo smiled when he noticed her.
“Just a second, I’m almost done,” he told her. “How was practise?”
“I kind of slept through it,” Dia replied sheepishly, causing the boy to chuckle.
“Are you sure you’re up for getting dinner then?”
“I have to eat anyway, right?” she said simply, and once again Myungsoo chuckled.
“I guess so,” he replied. Once he had gathered his stuff they left school together.
“Where did you want to go?” he asked her.
“There’s this udon place I really like…” Dia started.
“Really? I love udon. I think I know which one you mean,” he beamed, clearly happy with her choice.
Once they were seated and had their meals ordered, Myungsoo took the pictures out of his bag.
“What do you think?” he asked her nervously as he showed them to her. Dia studied them all carefully.
“I have to admit, they are pretty good,” she said smiling.
“Which ones are your favourites? Then I can put those in the exhibition.”
Dia slowly arranged them in two piles.
“These are the best,” she then said, pointing at one of the piles.
Myungsoo looked at her with an amused expression.
“Why those?”
“Well…” she started hesitantly. “I don’t know much about pictures… Lighting and such… But those are the ones where I look like I’m having fun.”
“But you’re smiling in all of them?”
“I guess you can’t see it, then,” She said softly.
“Here I’m confused, probably by something you said. Here, I was waiting for quite a while, and here I’m worrying. And on this one, I’m distracted by something,” she pointed to each picture.
“It’s amazing you can tell.”
Dia shook her head.
“Of course not. It’s obvious to me, since I know myself.”
“I guess I’ll just have to use the happy pictures then,” the boy smiled.
“Use the ones you like best, since you know more about photography, and it is a photo exhibition.”
“Knowing you were genuinely happy makes them prettier,” Myungsoo muttered quietly.
“Did you say something?” Dia asked him, but he just shook his head.
“Let’s eat,” he then said once the food was delivered and Dia nodded. They enjoyed their noodles in a comfortable silence. When they were done eating, Myungsoo got up to pay.
“You said you wouldn’t pay! It’s my treat today!” Dia objected.
“You’re hurt and tired, the least I can do is pay. Besides, you did help me choose the pictures,” he argued. Before Dia could say anything else, he paid the bill. She just sighed as they walked out.
“I was going to pay,” she pouted.
“You’re weird,” he muttered as they walked towards her home together.
“Thanks for the meal,” Dia said smiling when they reached her apartment.
“You’re welcome. So are you truly smiling now, or just faking it?” he teased.
“I’m not faking it,” she admitted softly, causing Myungsoo to smile widely.
“I’m glad to hear that,” he replied, softly taking her hand, and squeezing it once, before turning and walking away.
Dia sighed happily before entering her house. At least some parts of her life were working out. Just as she wanted to go to bed, her phone buzzed.
I’m sorry I didn’t wake you. Please don’t be mad.
Dia smiled at her phone.
“I wasn’t that angry in the first place.”
While she typed her reply, it buzzed again. This time, it was a picture. Her eyes widened, when she realised the little girl in the picture, sitting on a swing was she herself.
“How…” she muttered, before running towards her drawers. Her photo books were gone.
