First Game
Endless GameDia arrived at school just a tad late. In front of the lockers a small crowd had gathered, blocking her from reaching her own locker.
“Oh my, you are so cute!” “Just look at him!” “Isn’t he just perfect?” A bunch of girls seemed to have teamed up on a first year boy, right on the very first day. The boy awkwardly stood there, not sure of what to do.
“Leave him alone, and stop blocking the lockers,” Dia said rolling her eyes. She just wanted to get her books and move on, she was already late. The girls, who also seemed to be first years looked at her angry face once, before scattering in all directions.
“Thanks,” the boy said timidly.
“Don’t worry about it, I didn’t do it for you,” Dia shrugged and opened up her locker.
“Still, thanks. I’m No Minwoo. Just starting school here today.” The boy continued, and smiled.
He really does look cute when he smiles. Dia thought. “Yeah, I figured you must be a first year. Must be tough, to be swarmed on your first day. I’m Kwon Dia, but everyone just calls me Dia.”
“Nice to meet you, Dia.” Minwoo said and smiled once more before heading towards his class. Dia quickly got the stuff she needed from her locker and headed towards her classroom. It would not be a good start of the year if she got detention for being late.
“You’re so late! But at least you made it!” her friend Hee-Jin greeted her as she walked into the classroom. Hee-Jin had saved the seat next to her, and Dia gratefully sat down.
“Thanks. Yeah, there was a little uproar near the lockers, about some cute first year.” She rolled her eyes once more.
“And was he cute?” Hee-Jin asked her.
“Kind of, when he smiled,” Dia admitted. And he didn’t seem surprised by my red hair, which is a first, she added in her mind.
“Already over your crush on Myungsoo?” a voice suddenly came from behind them.
“Yah, Hoya, don’t say that out loud, so embarrassing, what if someone heard you?” Dia tried hard to keep her voice down, her face burning bright red.
“So, can I take that as a no?” Hoya continued to interrogate her. Dia was saved by the teacher walking in and apologising for being late. At least I wasn’t the only one who was late today. Dia really did try to pay attention to her classes, but failed miserably. For one, the boy sitting diagonally behind her kept throwing pieces of eraser at her.
“Stop that,” she hissed through her teeth, not wanting to draw the attention of the teacher. The guy just smirked and kept going.
“Yah!” she hissed once again. Hee-Jin looked at her in surprise.
“What’s going on?” she asked her friend.
“That idiot of a Sehun keeps throwing things in my hair,” Dia sighed and Hee-Jin glared at the boy behind her.
“Why does he hate you so much? He’s always after you,” Hee-Jin whispered.
“He’s just a bully. He doesn’t deserve our attention,” Dia sighed and shrugged, once again trying to focus on her math class. At least I’m sort of good at math.
After the first period, Sehun seemed to have gotten tired of throwing things, or maybe he had no eraser left and finally Dia could actually pay attention. That didn’t last long as during third period another class was have P.E. outside, very visible from their classroom. That class happened to contain both her crush, Myungsoo, and Hee-Jin’s boyfriend, Xiumin, causing both girls to totally lose focus and just stare out of the window.
“Miss Kwon, your answer?” Dia only noticed the teacher had asked her a question when Hoya kicked her chair from behind.
“Uhm..” she pretended to think, not wanting her teacher to find out she had only been paying attention to the boys playing baseball outside.
“Page 15, third question,” Hoya whispered from behind, making Dia eternally glad Hoya had been paying attention and was there to save her. She glanced at the question and was glad that it at the very least wasn’t very difficult.
“It’s CH3CH2CH2CH3.”
“Correct. Miss Kwon, that shouldn’t take you that long,” her teacher scolded her, but Dia was glad she was good at Chemistry and had been able to answer the question even without paying attention to the class.
“Miss Song, question 4 please,” the teacher continued, and it was a good thing Hee-Jin had been paying attention once Dia’s name had been called.
The rest of the classes were uneventful and before they knew it, it was time for lunch break.
“Hee-jinnie!” Xiumin was already waving at her and pointing to the seat next to him. Hee-Jin sat down, smiling happily and Hoya and Dia also joined them. Xiumin glared at Dia when she sat down, but turned his attention to Hee-Jin right away.
“I missed you!”
“So lovey-dovey right away,” Hoya rolled his eyes, but was smiling.
“Always, right,” Dia commented, in the meantime searching the cafeteria for Xiumin’s classmate, causing Hoya to softly slap her on her head.
“You’re being way too obvious, Dia,” he mock sighed.
“Ah, really? Thanks for warning me.” Dia turned a bright red, causing Hee-Jin and Xiumin to chuckle, and Hoya to also blush slightly.
“It’s nothing,” he muttered.
The four of them ate their lunch together, while talking about their holidays. Dia couldn’t help but look for Myungsoo every once in a while, but she couldn’t spot him. Whenever she did look for him, she felt Hoya’s eyes on her, and she looked down apologetically.
“Where are your friends, oppa?” Hee-Jin asked her boyfriend, trying to steer away the topic from Dia’s crush.
“They’re at another table. Next time you should join me there. It would definitely be fun.” He said with a smirk. He had never particularly liked Dia for some reason, although Dia herself couldn’t figure out why. I never did anything to him as far as I know, so I really don’t get it. Oh well, as long as he’s polite and Hee-Jin is happy, I don’t care.
“Next time I will,” Hee-Jin replied enthusiastically. “We should sit with your friends as often as with mine.”
The bell rang and they went back to their classes. Xiumin going the other way after receiving a hug from Hee-Jin, who blushed a little.
“I didn’t see him,” Dia muttered.
“At least you got to see him during Chemistry. Which means you get to see him every week, right?” Hee-Jin cheered her friend up.
“And it’s not like you saw him during the holidays, you should be used to it by now.” Hoya noted.
“That’s exactly why… Never mind,” Dia sighed. That’s why I was looking forward to seeing him today.
“Hey Carrot top, I guess the eraser didn’t help much. Still as red as ever,” was the first thing they heard as they walked into their classroom again. Sehun had been bullying Dia with her hair for as long as she could remember. Sure, it was unusual to have red hair in Korea. Her mom was British, not much she could do about it. Besides, she actually liked her hair colour.
“Not something I want to be told from someone who thought dyeing his hair rainbow coloured was a good idea,” Dia retorted. She never got how this boy, who loved dyeing his hair in every colour possible could ever hate her for her hair colour. But still, he did. Not feeling the need to spend more time talking to him, she sat down at her table again. Hee-Jin stuck out her tongue before sitting down as well.
“He never seems to get tired of it,” Dia sighed.
“Just hit him or something,” Hee-Jin encouraged her.
“I could beat him up for you,” Hoya offered. Dia smiled as her friends encouraged her.
“It’s okay, I can deal with him.”
Halfway through their midday classes everyone’s phone buzzed, all at the same time. Ringtones could be heard all through the classroom, leaving the teacher unsure about whose phone to take.
“Some idiot send a school mail to everyone. All our addresses are exposed.”
“What’s the big deal. It’s not like anyone can use them for something.”
Suddenly the class had erupted in an argument between whether or not this was a bad thing.
“Myungsoo’s address is in it too. You could text him,” Hee-Jin mentioned.
“That would just be weird,” Dia smiled, but saved his address anyway.
The afternoon classes were boring and Hee-Jin and Dia had just been writing messages to each other in their notebooks, at times also including their friend Hoya, which was hard, since this meant turning around in their seats. It made the time pass quicker and at least they could have some fun during these boring classes. When they were finished, Hee-Jin started, slightly blushing:
“I have a date today, so I won’t be walking home together with you, sorry!”
“That’s okay, enjoy your date,” Dia smiled and continued: “I was planning to go to the archery club before going home anyway.”
“But club activities haven’t started yet, right?” Hoya asked her.
“True, but since I’m co-captain this year, Captain Donghyun gave me a key to the storage shed. So I wanted to practise a bit before the official training started,” Dia smiled. She loved archery and couldn’t wait for practise to start.
“Enjoy practise, I’m going now!” Hee-Jin hugged them quickly, before running of to meet her boyfriend for their date.
“Whatever,” Hoya shrugged. “Guess I’ll be going home alone today.”
“Don’t be so melodramatic! It’s not like we always walk home together anyway. That would be like we were a couple,” Dia scolded.
“Don’t be silly,” Hoya said dryly, but Dia had already waved him goodbye and walked on to her club. She was so excited, she was practically running. Because of that, she didn’t notice someone turned the corner in front of her and ran right into him.
“I’m so sorry!” she immediately apologised.
“You wanted to see me that much?” a familiar voice asked. Dia couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
“Actually I wanted to shoot something that much,” she said harshly, as the person in front of her was Woohyun, the number one flirt of the school. There was no-one as cheesy as him.
“Violent much?” he said laughing, and continued: “If you weren’t so violent, I could show you a whole new world.”
Dia rolled her eyes again.
“No thank you, I’m perfectly fine with the world I’m living in right now.”
“Well, if you ever change your mind, feel free to join me on my carpet,” he said smiling, and continued to walk.
I can never get used to him. Why is he so weird? How is Xiumin even friends with him? You would think he would go crazy if Woohyun said something like that to Hee-Jin. And he would, cuz Woohyun flirts with everyone. Dia shook her head to get the unwanted thoughts out. Focus. In a few minutes you can go shoot and let it go. Argh, he’s infecting me with his Disney references.
She arrived at the archery range, which was completely empty, as she had expected. She prepared her bow, and readied some targets, she couldn’t wait to start shooting. Before she knew it, she was aiming at the centre and hitting it with one arrow after the other.
Bzz bzz Her phone. She had it in her pocket, since it wasn’t an official training. I hope nothing happened with Hee-Jin. The message on her phone was short.
You are doing pretty well.
She looked around, trying to see if someone was watching. Nobody was. She didn’t recognise the address either. Probably a wrong number.
Bzz bzz. Another message.
I know you read it.
Once again Dia looked around. Nobody. Even when she was very quiet, she couldn’t hear anyone. She took a deep breath and focussed on the targets again. Or at least, she tried to. Her brain seemed to be preoccupied with the text messages and the arrow didn’t even go near the target. And even worse, her shoulders weren’t relaxed enough and the string hit her right on the elbow. That’s going to bruise. It’s been a while since I hit myself there. She slid her armguard up a bit more. You weren’t supposed to hit your elbow, usually if one shot poorly, the string would hit your arm around the wrist. Dia had often managed to bruise her whole elbow when she had just started out, surprising everyone.
Bzz bzz.
Am I disturbing you?
Her eyes widened a bit as she read the third message on her phone. I am being watched. There is no other option. Dia decided to pack up her bow and call it a day. The messages were getting a bit creepy.
Bzz bzz. Again, her phone buzzed as she closed the storage shed.
You can run, but you can’t hide.
You will be mine.
