“D..date?” Hyoyeon stammered – her mind was blank except for that one word.

On the other end of the line, Hyukjae laughed self- consciously, “Yea, Heechul hyung set us up.”

(‘us’? they were already an ‘us’?)

The line was silent as Hyoyeon struggled to find words –

“Ya! Did you fall asleep on me or something? I’m telling you about an important night in my life here!” he chided her jokingly and Hyoyeon strained herself into holding herself together..

“No it’s not that,” her laugh was forced but thankfully Hyukjae was too distracted by his jacket selection to notice. “I was just wondering which poor girl would be your unlucky guinea pig.”

"Mean kid! As a best friend aren’t you supposed to encourage me!”

“I don’t want to..” she mumbled, tentatively hoping for a second that he would catch on but he wouldn’t be Hyukjae if he wasn’t always thinking the best about her. So he simply answered his own question, “I guess that’s what makes you so special Hyo; so I Lee HyukJae, the kind and generous Dancing King, will overlook your follies, the rude but undeniably adorable Dancing Queen.” 

She felt her heart crack deeper – ‘Don’t be so sweet if you want me to let you go!’

Slowly but surely, the panic was building up. The walls of her room were starting to close in and she felt a deep gut wrenching sob lodged in .

‘It still isn’t too late. He hasn’t gone out on his date yet, you can still confess and stop him before he does pabo-ya.’

“Oppa I…”

“Yea? You want to tell me I’m awesome and witty, right?” she could hear his grin through the phone (he must be happy) “if you really believe that Hyo, will you please pray that I don’t fumble this date entirely? God why am I so nervous?”

The negativity started to seep in..

 ‘He wouldn’t be going on a date, if he liked me. Now is not the time to be selfish – after all he’s done for me in the past, I can’t let him down…

but .. but one tiny little try won’t hurt anyone, right?’

 “No oppa," she crossed her fingers, "I want to remind you not to forget your promise.”

“Promise?”

To always care about me as much as your future girlfriend.

But it seems you already have…

Her willpower deflated.

“Uh.. yeah.. you know you were supposed to treat me to lunch last time. Don’t spend all your money on your date!”

“I won’t, don’t worry. Not that you’re ever going to let me,” he chuckled. “Hey.. I’m really sorry Hyo but I think I should get ready –”

“Oh yes totally. Don’t want to be late for my sister in law, ha.ha.ha.”

“Stop jumping to conclusions so fast, choding! You’re going to make me nervous,” he scolded.

“Mian, just be yourself and I’m sure she’ll lo.. love you.”

(just like I stupidly just realized too late)

“You think? I’m only telling you this Hyo.. but I can’t help feeling hopeful, you know? I’m so ready for a real relationship,” he spoke in a softer voice.

Hyoyeon took a deep painful breath, “Actually I don’t think so…” Hyukjae’s face fell on the other end of the line. “Stop pouting and listen fully to what I was going to say -- I don’t think because.. I know.” Hyoyeon concluded after a beat.

“Ya, you almost gave me a heart attack, punk!”

Warm tears started rolling down Hyoyeon’s face slowly.

“Uh I gotta go oppa.. bye! And oh, don’t forget to wear that cologne I got you! It’ll bring you luck!”

“Thanks Hyoyeonnie, you’re the bestest best friend ever!”
