Leo sat alone, watching the other children playing. He was envious of them, of how much fun they were having. He didn’t have any siblings to play with and thanks to his rank in the monster realm he couldn’t exactly go up to other children there and ask them to play. That was the whole reason he had come to the human world in the first place. He wasn’t looking for a friend – he wouldn’t be able to stay in the human realm long enough for that to happen – he just wanted someone who would play with him for a few hours.
Unfortunately, the children he had met didn’t want to play with him. Maybe they realized that he wasn’t like them and that scared them off. His father had said that human children were smart like that. They always seemed to know a monster when they saw one and acted accordingly. But that didn’t do Leo much good, not when he wanted one of those children to play with him.
“Hello,” Leo looked up to find a boy, a few years younger than himself, standing before him with a bright smile, “do you want to play?”
“Y-You want to play?” Leo questioned, “With me?”
“Yeah,” the boy giggled, “I’m Sanghyuk. What’s your name?”
“L-Leo,” Leo replied, standing up and returning Sanghyuk’s smile with a smaller, shyer version of his own.
“So?” Sanghyuk asked, “Do you want to play?”
“Alright,” Leo’s smile grew a little before following Sanghyuk across the playground.
The pair ended up playing in the forest beside the playground. All day, they pretended to be everything from wild animals to explorers searching for ancient ruin. Leo’s smile grew through the day until it could rival Sanghyuk’s in size. The young prince honestly couldn’t recall the last time he had had so much fun which was why he grew so sad when he heard his father calling for him.
“Is that your dad?” Sanghyuk asked when he saw Leo look up at the sound of his name being called.
“Yeah,” Leo frowned sadly, “I have to go home.”
“Too bad,” Sanghyuk pouted before his smile returned, “but we can always play together the next time you come here, right?”
“Yeah,” Leo nodded even though he knew he would never come back to this playground again.
“Don’t forget, alright?” Sanghyuk stuck his hand out, pinky finger extended, “promise?”
“Promise,” Leo smiled, entwining his own pinky finger with Sanghyuk’s.

Leo, now much older, sat in his thrown. In front of him sat a crystal orb, magically enchanted so that he could see whatever – or whoever – he wanted to see through the ball. The item was a key tool that all kings of the monster realm had. Most used it to keep an eye on all the monsters assigned to scare the children of the world, a few used it for additional reasons.
Leo fell into the latter category.
Since his father’s death when he was eleven, he had been alone. Most had feared him, leaving him with nothing but a thrown, a magical orb, and the duties of a king. And a memory of a little boy with a bright smile who’d asked him to play. Leo was the reason Ravi had been allowed to stay with Sanghyuk for so long as the young king wanted to ensure that Sanghyuk would always have someone there to protect him.
And now he was watching as Sanghyuk finished packing the last of his bags, laughing and joking with his friend Hongbin who was helping him pack. Leo had never intended to fall in love with Sanghyuk, he had only wanted to hear Sanghyuk’s laugher, see his smile, and pretend that he was there with his friend having fun. But he had fallen for Sanghyuk and he wanted Sanghyuk to be his bride.
With Sanghyuk there by his side, Leo wouldn’t be alone ever again. He would always have someone there to make him smile and laugh. He would always have someone there to love him. He just needed to make Sanghyuk fall in love with him.
A/N: so, I’m sure a lot of you guys who’ve been reading the boogieman AU were like “back off Leo, let Ravi have Hyukkie. He’s loved him for so long. How dare you break them up like that.” and now? After this? On another note, I am loving writing this AU. I don’t know why (and it’s not like I don’t love the other AUs) but it’s just……so much fun~!
