Leo sat in the window of the apartment he lived in with Hakyeon and Sanghyuk. Normally, he’d be watching the people on the street while Sanghyuk watched some cartoon on the TV. However Sanghyuk wasn’t doing that, so Leo wasn’t doing his normal thing either.
“Try and cheer up,” Hakyeon spoke up from the couch, “Hongbin is his best friend. Well, besides me. Any way, they haven’t seen each other in a while so you can’t blame them for taking so long. They have a lot to catch up on.”
“They can catch up here,” Leo frowned.
Earlier in the week, Sanghyuk had come home with a huge smile on his face and a handsome young man trailing behind him. Hakyeon had apparently known who the stranger was since he greeted him with a big hug, but Leo was out of the loop. Sanghyuk had noticed and quickly introduced the cat boy to the handsome man – Hongbin. Sanghyuk had explained that he and Hongbin had been friends since they were babies and that the other had spent the past year or so in another country.
That was the most Sanghyuk had said to Leo since Hongbin had shown up.
It wasn’t that Leo was against Sanghyuk having friends – he liked Wonsik just fine and Jaehwan wasn’t bad so long as he kept his mouth shut. But Hongbin was……different. Even when the loud mouthed Jaehwan and the calmer Wonsik came over, Sanghyuk always made sure to pay attention to Leo. Still made sure Leo felt wanted and needed. Since Hongbin had showed up……it seemed like Sanghyuk was spending less and less time with Leo, less and less time reminding Leo that he belonged there.
Sure, he still made sure that Leo ate and was feeling well, but that wasn’t enough. Leo liked it when Sanghyuk would sit with him and just talk about his day or his favorite show even though he knew Leo wasn’t going to reply back to him. Now Sanghyuk talked about that stuff with Hongbin. Most of his time was spent outside of the apartment now, too. All of that time was spent with Hongbin.
“I’m starting to hate that name,” Leo muttered to himself before heading off to Sanghyuk’s room.
With a sad sigh, Leo crawled under the blankets and pressed his face against the pillows so that he could breathe in Sanghyuk’s scent. He missed his owner so much it hurt. He wanted Sanghyuk there so badly. Why did Hongbin have to come back? Why did he have to take up all of Sanghyuk’s time? Just what the hell was so special him than made Sanghyuk want to spend so much time with him? Time that he should be spending with Leo.
“Leo?” Hakyeon called, entering the room slowly like he expected the cat boy to attack him or something, “can we talk?”
“What about?” Leo questioned, not looking up from the pillow he’d buried his face in.
“Sanghyuk,” Hakyeon replied, “and Hongbin.” Leo hissed when he heard the second name and Hakyeon gave him a knowing look.
“What do you want to say about them?” Leo asked, finally pulling his head away from the pillow.
“You’re jealous,” Hakyeon said, “and not because Hongbin is spending time with your master.”
“What are you talking about?” Leo huffed, “that’s not why I’m mad. I’m mad because Sanghyuk is spending more time with him than me. He’s my owner, not Hongbin’s.”
“You don’t see Sanghyuk as just your owner, do you?” Hakyeon asked, sighing when Leo gave him a confused look, “you love him, Leo.”
“Of course I love him,” Leo said, “he’s my owner. He feeds me, cloths me, and gave me a home. Why wouldn’t I love him?”
“Oh for crying out loud,” Hakyeon sighed, clearly frustrated, “you don’t love him like an owner. You love Sanghyuk like a guy. A guy you’d like to date, and kiss, and sleep with, and…..and just be with.”
“I,” Leo cleared his throat as he tried to find the right words to respond to Hakyeon with, “I don’t. He’s my master and I love him as such.” For some reason, those words sounded hollow to his own ears.
The more Leo thought about it, the more…..the more he wanted to agree with Hakyeon. Hakyeon was kind of like his owner, too. But Leo had never cared about what Hakyeon did or who he hung out with the same way he cared about Sanghyuk. He didn’t worry about Hakyeon the same way he did with Sanghyuk. He cared about them the same way when he first started living with them, way back when he was still living in his cat form twenty four seven. Over time, however, that changed.
“I love him,” Leo whispered as the realization dawned on him.
“I know,” Hakyeon nodded, patting Leo’s head softly, ‘now I need to make Sanghyuk realize he loves Leo, too.’
