Did you ever think of drowning yourself in an ocean full of sharks? Or eating a large piece of meat and choke yourself to death? How about jumping from a fifty-story building? Or drinking poison from a vial and die effortlessly like Romeo oh Romeo?
Because I did…
I was standing motionless in front of the mirror, horrified at myself. I blinked and I blinked, hoping that the girl in the mirror wasn’t me. This was terrifying. This was more terrifying than ballet lessons and whatever lessons I had in the past.
No, it wasn’t Halloween…
My maids scurried next to me and helped me to get dressed. The dress my mom picked for me was a brilliant yellow sundress, complimenting my milky white skin.
No, I wasn’t Snow White…
It fitted well in my tiny waist and showed my short legs.
…and definitely not a dwarf.
I instructed my maids to leave after dressing me. I frowned. The dress was getting itchy as well as the glitters in my eyes.
“Kim Taeyeon!” My mom screamed when she saw me wiping the glitters off my face. “Don’t you dare!” she threatened, her eyes were bulging out. I raised my hand, never breaking eye contact, and smudged my make-up. “That’s it, young lady!”
I shrieked and ran away from my mom. Wow! Who would have thought that I could run with these sparkling four inches high-heels! I managed to escape from my mother and my annoying maids. I was panting hard when I reached our garden. This was my favorite place aside from our music room upstairs. It was so enchanting and full of life. There was a maze of paths with fountain and benches. Butterflies were fluttering, flowers blossomed everywhere, and grasses were perfectly trimmed.
“You shouldn’t run away like that…” A pleasant voice said behind. I turned around and saw my twin sister, Kim Haeyeon. Her hair was pulled up in intricate braids showing her forehead, her make-up was natural, and she was wearing a cream color sundress paired with sparkling high-heels like mine. What a beauty in the outside, a beast in the inside.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her coldly. I didn’t want to be mean to her since it was our birthday but this was me. I was mean, selfish and… retarded? She smiled her serene smile as she sat beside me. “The party started and guests were looking for you. Mom was furious. You should see her face…”
It was our 18th birthday. My family was extremely rich. We had our own company, own jet, own yacht… let’s just say that we had everything, okay? So, they, specifically my control freak mother, wanted to throw a big party for me and Haeyeon. I was against it at first but Haeyeon pursued me so I said yes. I couldn’t say no to her. She was so persistent and annoying at the same time.
“Why are you talking to me? Are you out of your mind?” I asked irritatingly. There it was. I was ruining my chance of a lifetime to fix our relationship. She got up and sighed. “Give it a break, Taeyeon. It’s our birthday. By the way, Junsu wanted to say ‘Happy Birthday’.” And with that, she left me.
Junsu who?
Who was he?
HAHAHA I think I had amnesia from hitting my head on the floor when I first tried these sparkling shoes. Or maybe… I had a trauma and forgot everything about him! Oh, please! Who was I kidding?! I couldn’t forget Kim Junsu. He was my first love…
“I am wondering why my favorite girl wasn’t in her birthday party…” I heard a high-pitched voice behind me. I was crying and hiding behind the bushes in our garden. A clown came to me awhile ago and offered me a house and lot… nah, just a candy. My dad taught me not to talk to strangers plus I hated clowns so I kicked his crotch and ran away.
I wiped my tears and turned around to see a young boy smiling while holding a small box attached with dolphin-shaped balloon. I excitedly ran towards him and blabbered about me being a party-pooper. “I hate clowns. I hate parties. I hate noisy kids.”
“Happy 7th birthday, my princess!” he greeted happily as he handed me his present. I excitedly took it and opened the box, forgetting that I had snot all over my face. It was a silver necklace with dolphin pendant. I foolishly grinned and held it with my little hands. “It’s beautiful,” I whispered.
“Promise me one thing…” he said as he helped me put on my new necklace.
“Promise what?”
“That you will wear this every time…”
“I promise…”
“Pinky swear?”
“Pinky swear.”
Kim Junsu was the only son of our head chef, Mr. Kim, who was also my dad’s childhood best friend slash business partner. When our company was just starting, they had this weird agreement that if their children fell in love, they would let them get married. Selfish consenting adults.
Fortunately, Mr. Kim had a son and dad had us. What if they both had a son? Would they still let their children marry? Junsu’s mom died after giving birth to him. Being a kind-hearted man, my dad let Junsu and his father live with us.
So, when we were still toothless and still pooping on our diapers, Haeyeon, Junsu and I were inseparable. We would always play together, eat together, and laugh together… sleep together, cry together, poop together, pee together…
will die toge…
ENOUGH of that already!
As we grew older, Junsu and I became closer while Haeyeon and I drifted apart. We started fighting over stupid little things like ‘who’s prettier?’ or ‘who’s taller?’ We were twins for god sake! Eventually, she became jealous and spoiled…
“Taeyeon ah~ that’s so beautiful. Where did you get it? I want one too...” Haeyeon said in jealousy. Three of us were in our enormous library doing our homework about nervous system. Junsu looked at me, alarmed. This was the reason why mom and dad always buy same things for us.
“No~ this is only for me...” I scowled and transferred to another seat.
Haeyeon followed me and held my necklace. “Just for today Taeyeon. Let me wear it…” Haeyeon insisted. I tried to loosen Haeyeon’s grip. “Ya! Stop it Haeyeon...”
But Haeyeon pulled my necklace while I pulled back. In a matter of seconds, it was all over the floor... the pendant was gone and the lock was broken.
“No! What have you done?! What have you done?! No! No!” I screamed, imitating Rapunzel’s stepmother when Eugene cut Rapunzel’s golden hair using a broken glass from a mirror. I picked up my necklace on the floor. “I’m sorry Taeyeon,” she apologized. I started to cry then I pushed her on the floor and left.
“I hate you Haeyeon! I will hate you forever!!”
