A Common Dream

Seoul Music

I blinked groggily and saw ceiling. Flashes of earlier went through my head like a bad nightmare. I tried to remember, but when I realized it was real, I immediately sat up and pulled my knees into my chest as my body started to tremble again.

"You're awake," a male voice said.

I clenched my knees tighter but I looked over and saw that it was Namjoon. I realized we were in the school doctor’s office, but it seemed like the doctor wasn’t there.

"It's alright," Namjoon said softly.

He turned around and started to walk away but I reached out and grabbed the cuff of jacket sleeve. “Please don’t leave,” I said, barely above a whisper.

He looked at me and smiled kindly. “I was just going to get you some water,” he said.

I nodded and let go of his jacket. I watched him walk over the sink and tried to focus on what he was doing so that I didn’t think of anything unnecessary. He came back and handed me a cup. I took it with a shaky hand and took a couple sips. He took the cup back and set it on the table next to the bed.

“We are going to have to report him,” Namjoon said as he sat in a chair.

I looked down in thought for a minute. I didn’t want to, but I knew he was right. It was scary and I couldn’t let there be the chance that anyone else would have to face the same situation because of him.

I nodded.

“I’ll go with you,” he said.

I took a deep breath, let go of my knees and stood up. “Let’s go,” I said.

We walked down the hall to the teacher’s offices. Thankfully Ms. Jun, my homeroom teacher, was still at her desk.

“Oh hi Aila, Namjoon,” she said barely looking at us, “Just a second here, let me finish typing this last sentence.” She typed, clicked a couple times and finally looked up at us. When she saw my face she frowned. “Aila are you alright? Your complexion doesn’t look well.”

“I-” I started to say, but then froze.

I saw Namjoon glance at me from the corner of my eye. “She was ually harassed,” he said in a straightforward tone.

Ms. Jun shot out of her seat and came to my side. “By you?” Ms. Jun said, glaring daggers at Namjoon.

“No,” he said shaking his hands.

“Mr. Shin,” I said quietly.

Ms. Jun looked completely shocked. “Wh-where… what happened?”

“He asked her to come to his office after school but then lead her behind the gym,” Namjoon answered for me, “I just happened to find them before anything serious happened.”

“Are you alright?” Ms. Jun said, looking sincerely concerned.

I nodded. “I’ll be fine.”

“Why don’t you sit here for a minute?” she said pointing to a couch, “I’ll get you a cup of tea.”

“Okay,” I said. Just then my phone buzzed. I pulled it out of my pocket.

Hey, where are you? It was Krystal. We are waiting for you.

I can’t come today, sorry. I wrote. I will explain later, okay?

“You can go now Namjoon,” Ms. Jun said, “I’ll give her a ride home.”

“Okay,” he said, “see you later Aila.”

My brain felt frozen as I just nodded.

When I got home, I didn’t tell anyone about what had happened. I just wanted to avoid thinking about it all together. Instead, I said I wasn’t feeling well and went to bed. The next morning as I got ready for school, I could feel my stomach doing flips. My throat was tight and I felt feverish.

“Are you okay?” Hyosung said while we waited for the bus, “You don’t look well.”

“I’m fine,” I lied, “I’m just a bit tired. I guess I’m still adjusting to the time difference.”

Hyosung just nodded.

20 minutes later, we made it to school and headed to homeroom. Surprisingly, Jimin and Taehyung were already in their seats.

I walked towards me seat. “I heard something happened yesterday,” Jimin said. I stopped.

Taehyung stood up. “Do you need a hug?” He held his arms out and smiled cheesily.

I chuckled. I hugged him briefly. It was a small thing, but it actually made me feel a bit better.

“If you want to talk to us, we are here,” Jimin said, actually being serious for once.

I smiled softly. “Kamsahabnida (thank you), naljong-eyo (maybe later).”

Jimin just nodded and then I took my seat.

Ms. Jun walked into the room. “Hello class,” she said, “Please take your seats.”

“I wanted to let all of you know, first off, that Mr. Shin will not be teaching for the rest of the week. There will be a substitute.” She looked at me for a couple seconds and I got the hint.

I took a deep breath; I felt enormously relieved.

“What happened yesterday?” Krystal asked as we changed for P.E., “after I got your text, I was really worried.”

“Sorry for making you worry,” I said. With as little detail as possible, I explained to her and Elly what had happened.

“Oh. My. Gosh. That is awful!” Krystal said in English, “I can’t believe it!”

“To be honest, I had a bad feeling about him,” Elly said, “but I never would have thought he’d go that far.”

“Good thing Namjoon came just in time,” Krystal said.

“But why you?” Elly thought aloud, “He’s been here for a couple years, but you're the first one he’s ever made a move on.”

“Maybe he has a for foreign girls,” Krystal said and shuddered, “creepy! That aside, I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“Me too,” Elly said, “we’re here for you if you need anything.”

“We can be your bodyguards,” Krystal said, curling her arm up and flexing it.

I chuckled. “Thanks guys. I couldn’t ask for better friends.”

“Aw,” Krystal said. She came over and hugged me tightly. “Next time you have to come to our club meeting, alright?”

“Arasseo (got it),” I said.

After class, I helped Ms. Jun carry some papers to her office, so I was late getting to the dance club. When I slid open the door, the seven guys were standing in the middle of the room. It seemed I had stopped a conversation they were having.

“There she is!” Taehyung said smiling widely as he closed his eyes.

“We’re all glad you’re alright,”Hoseok said as he put a hand on my shoulder.

“Thanks,” I mumbled softly. The attention made me feel embarrassed.

“Pabo (fool),” Yoonggi suddenly said, “you shouldn’t just go around trusting everyone. People can’t be trusted.” He glared at me like I was disgusting and left the room.

I didn’t seem to be the only one who was surprised; the room fell silent for several moments. “Does he dislike me?” I said finally.

“It’s not just you,” Jin said, “he doesn’t like anyone much. He had a bad experience in the past I think.”

I looked at him with my eyebrows furrowed. “How did he become friends with you guys then?”

“He’s not really that close with us,” Jin admitted, “He mostly only talks to Namjoon.”

“Well then why does he hang out with all of you?”

“You don’t know?” Jimin said, widening his eyes and then he smiled like he knew something I didn’t, “We all have the same dream.”

“Really?” I said, cocking my head to the side, “What’s that?”

“We all want to be singers!” Taehyung said, “Or rappers in the case of Namjoon, Hoseok, and Yoonggi.”

So that was it. That was why even though they all seemed like unlikely friends, they stuck together. The “Unsuited Seven” weren’t quite so unsuited after all.  I couldn’t help but smile and laugh a little. They weren’t as mysterious and scary as others gossiped about. They were just a group of guys who aspired for the same thing.

“Why are you laughing?” Taehyung said, giving me a playful evil eye.

“It’s nothing,” I said shaking my head.

“Is it because you just realized this guy is so short?” Taehyung said, patting Jimin’s head.

“Ya!” Jimin said and punched Taehyung playfully in his side.

I laughed as they continued to fight like brothers. I looked over and realized that Namjoon had now left the group and was over in the corner listening to music. While the others were distracted, I made my way over to talk to him. When he saw me approach, he pulled the earbuds out of his ears.

“I just wanted to thank you,” I said, “I didn’t get the chance to say it before.”

“It was nothing,” he said, shrugging it off.

“But I was also curious… how did you find us there? It’s not exactly the most populated area of campus.”

“Well…” he said and hesitated, “The way he acted around you seemed a bit odd and then I just happened to see him leading you off behind the gym.”

“Well again, thank you. If you hadn’t come when you did…”

“I’m glad I did find you,” he said.

“Hey! Aila, Aila, Aila!” Jimin suddenly shouted across the room, “Have you been to a Noraebang yet?”

“A karaoke room?” I turned around and said, “No, not yet I haven’t.”

“Let’s go this weekend, all of us together!”

“Yeah, yeah!” Taehyung said, “let’s go together!”

I smiled. “Okay.”

Jimin pumped his fists excitedly. “Oh, and you can bring your friends if you want to. We can go explore. I’m sure you haven’t gotten to see much of Seoul yet.”

“No I haven’t.”

“Perfect. Then it’s a date!”
