My Brother's Keeper (ch1)
Description
All children, except one, grow up-J.M. Barrie
It sounded poetic and whimsical to say that he never really grew up, that he was really a child at heart. And sometimes, when Yunho didn't feel like explaining things, that's what he told people. His brother was Peter Pan come to life. The boy who never grew up.
And in a certain sense, it was true. His brother had never grown up. But the reason why was not as romantic as he sometimes made it sound. In fact, his brother had suffered a terrible accident when he was a small child. Back then, everyone wondered if he would make it from one day to the next. And it seemed to be a miracle when he outlived the prognosis the doctors had given him. He lived past the age of six, and proved to be as strong and as healthy as he once was.
But-his mind never fully recovered. Mentally, he was only eleven. An eleven year old trapped in the body of a man, twenty-two.Yunho tried not too think about that very often. It made him mad. His younger brother, he felt, had been cheated on life. And he (Yunho) had to watch it everyday.
-Monday morning dawned cloudy, threatening of rain. But inside the house, the house that Yunho's deceased parents had left him, the sweet and salty smells of breakfast wafted out from the kitchen. Yoochun, Yunho's best friend was cooking. He didn't live in the house, but was over often enough to make it seem like he did. And when he came over in the morning, he cooked. One less thing for Yunho to do.
A light step was heard on the stairs. Yoochun waited. One-Two-Three-THUMP! "Jaejoong!" he cried, "How many times has Yunho told you not to jump from the stairs? You go back up and walk down like a human being!"
He listened and smiled. Jae did that every morning.
"If I could fly," came a gentle voice from behind, "I wouldn't need to walk." Yoochun turned around. Jaejoong was standing in the kitchen. There were days when his looks struck Yoochun. He looked radiant today. Many people often said that Jae's looks had been wasted on a man. His skin was soft and as fair as snow, set off even more by his jet black hair. His mouth was rosy and delicately formed. Sleeping Beauty would have been jealous. And Jaejoong had a smile like spring.
Yoochun shook himself from his thoughts. "If you could fly, I wouldn't need to work."
Jae smiled and sat down at the counter. He looked around. A perturbed look clouded his face.
"Where's Yunho? He didn't wake me up this morning. My hair was really tangly; I had to comb it out myself."
If Jaejoong could be considered the moon, than Yunho was the sun. Jae's whole world revolved around his brother. Often, Yoochun wondered what would happen to Jae if Yunho were, somehow, not to be there.
"He got called into work early, but he'll be there to pick you up from school."
Jae stuck his tongue out. One of his quirkiest habits that he did when he was either confused or upset. He looked at Yoochun,
"But he'll pick me up from school?"
With a nod, Yoochun answered him. And setting down a plate piled high with scrambled eggs and kiwi (Jae liked kiwi with everything) he watched the boy eat.
