Chapter 2

Spawn of the Devil

The Kwons now had a baby girl in their house, much to the delight of the new mother. She now had someone to doll up, someone’s hair to fix one day, someone to call her Mini-Me. The father was equally delighted to have her and for the first time they actually appreciated Hyori for bringing a bag of baby supplies that could help them nurture their baby. The mother looked at the baby and decided she was too beautiful. The father couldn’t help but think the same. As they were marvelling over the beauty of their new child, they noticed its face started to crumple, it was about to cry. The couple worried and wondered, being first time parents, what the baby was crying about and what they could do to make it stop.

“Her diaper isn’t soiled,” said the mother. “Must be hungry. Let’s see what we got in here…” the mother, Kwon Sun Joong, opened the bag and found a baby bottle with milk in it.

“Well, the baby was smart and considerate enough to include a bottle of milk. At least!” Kwon Ban Gi, the father, said. Sun Joong took the bottle and fed the baby. Ban Gi didn’t notice anything strange about the milk. Nothing. Looked perfectly normal to him.

Except for the fact that that potion was a lifetime potion, meaning once it took effect, it would stay with the victim for the rest of her life.

Sun Joong lifted the baby and took the bottle and fed the baby with it. She then realized that they hadn’t come up with a name for it yet.

“Ban Gi! We don’t have a name for our child yet!”

“I already came up with one. “

“And that is…”

“Sun Kyu.” he said with a beam on his face. “Her nickname shall be Sunny.” Sun Joong smiled and cooed at the baby. Her husband did the same thing. The couple was never happier.

Later that night, before going to bed, Sun Joong fixed the crib and laid the child. Baby Sunny then began to throw tantrums, kicking her tiny feet and trying to hit her mother with tiny hands. Baby Sunny then began to cry and Sun Joong tried her best to calm the child down. She was successful and as soon as Baby Sunny’s tears stopped flowing and the child’s eyes closed, Sun Joong put her down gently in the crib and watched her as she peacefully breathed and slept. Sun Joong’s husband Ban Gi came by her side a few minutes later and much like couples who just had their first child together, they watched the child with loving eyes before leaving the room to retire to their own.

Ban Gi closes the door of the child’s room, leaving the child alone in the darkness. Ban Gi and Sun Joong thought their night would be like any other night they spent together, only happier because of their new child. The young couple blissfully went to sleep, thinking that tomorrow would be another day of happiness for the newly blessed. Ban Gi held his wife close in his sleep and slept with a smile plastered on his face.

Then, at around 12:00 mn, the house started to tremble. Very lightly the house shook. The couple didn’t feel it and continued their slumber. The house trembled a little bit more, a little bit more violent than the first one. The place tossed from side to side, pans and pots fell from their hangers, the wardrobes flew open and all the clothes came crashing down on the floor, the lampshades went off and fell on the floor, broke on the floor, the glass of water that Ban Gi had on his side table was on the edge and finally, it fell on the floor, shattering the glass and wetting the brown carpet. Sun Joong heard the commotion and jolted awake. Her husband, who was a heavy sleeper, was peacefully snoring by her side and Sun Joong had to shake him to wake him.

“Ban Gi! Ban Gi! There’s an earthquake!” she shrieked. “Hurry! Get up! We have to get the baby!” Sun Joong sprang out of bed and so did her husband. Together, they rushed to the baby’s room with their heads ducked and covered by their arms to protect their heads from the debris. Their house was slowly falling apart with the ceilings cracking and the walls crumbling yet the only thing on their minds was the baby. Sun Joong quickly bust through the door and rushed to the crib to get the baby. Baby Sunny was peacefully sleeping, miraculously. The earthquake didn’t wake her up. Nonetheless, with the house continuously shaking and the things continuously falling, Sun Joong carried Baby Sunny and covered the infant’s head with her hand. Ban Gi escorted his wife out of the room and they all ran to their basement, the safest place in their house and the perfect panic room. Picture frames fell down, vases broke and more things got destroyed.

But Ban Gi noticed something.

The husband looked outside his window and saw their car parked still on the ground. The neighbors’ cars were at peace too and so were their houses. If there really was an earthquake, the cars would teeter and topple over but since they weren’t, Ban Gi and Sun Joong decided that the earth wasn’t shaking after all. When their minds were finally opened to this fact, the house stopped shaking but was left in disarray. Ban Gi and Sun Joong looked around them. The house went back to normal, like nothing happened. Baby Sunny was sleeping soundly in Sun Joong’s arms. Never did she wake up. This disturbed the couple so that they couldn’t help but question the occurrence in their heads.

“How did that happen so fast?” Ban Gi wondered. “A few minutes ago our house was shaking and now everything’s back to normal?”

“I know. Ban Gi, I think there’s something in our house.” Sun Joong said worriedly. “And I’m afraid that it’ll come after our child if we don’t do something about it.”

“I wish I could say that it was just your imagination but that would be lying. Because honestly I felt it too.” Ban Gi was being as honest as possible with his wife though he didn’t want to freak her out. He sacrificed their comfort for the truth.

“I agree.” Sun Joong said. She looked at Baby Sunny whose eyes began to open. Sun Joong placed a finger on each eye in an effort to put her child back to sleep. “Come, let’s just go back to bed.” Ban Gi followed his wife up the stairs. He trailed behind her and in his mind was the disturbing thought of what had transpired.

How in the devil’s name did our house shake? And why? And how did the house restore order? Ban Gi thought. This sent chills up his spine. So scared was he that he rushed up the stairs, overtaking his wife and pretended to playfully jump on the bed whereas he was just scared and wanted to hide under the sheets. Sun Joong saw him with a childish smile on his face and laughed. The young mother headed to Baby Sunny’s room and placed her in the crib. Baby Sunny her thumb and slept like an angel. Sun Joong rested her arms on the crib and her chin on her folded arms. She blinked her sleepy eyes, not taking them off her child.

I don’t want them to get you. her brain said. And they will never get you. I won’t allow that. They’re gonna have to go through me and your daddy first. They’ll never hurt you little angel. They will never hurt you. Sun Joong thought and looked down at her child. She detatched herself from the crib and yawned, walked back to her room. Sun Joong grabbed the knob but before she could even turn it, the door magically opened for her. She shook her head in disbelief and wanted to give in to the goosebumps that were popping on her skin, signaling fright but Sun Joong dismissed this as just her imagination combined with the deadly infection of sleepiness and walked out of the room. She reached for the knob once more to close it but the door had a mind of its own and closed, shut itself right behind her. Sun Joong was convinced that something creepy was going on and walked quickly to her room. She found her husband sound asleep, hugging a pillow. Sun Joong tried to appear calm and turned the lights out, walked carefully in a crouched position, almost crawling to her husband’s side and covered herself with her blanket. Sun Joong embraced her husband and closed her eyes tightly. What her husband thought was a sign of affection was actually a sign of fear and wanting of protection.

What they thought would be an easy night, a blissful evening turned out to be a night of fright and dread. The couple wasn’t rattled that much, yet. They weren’t totally scared to the point of leaving the house. They were just surprised but were positive that it would pass.

They were really positive that it would pass.

[SEVERAL YEARS LATER]

After several blessings, several prayer meetings, several mass offerings, the hauntings still went on, forcing the family to move from house to house. Because of their frequent moving, the family was starting to feel that the hauntings had something to do with Sunny since they started when she came. Not knowing why the child had powers or where she got them from and since the couple had no knowledge of the supernatural whatsoever, they decided to prevent their young daughter from having any contact with the outside world and to just familiarize herself with the family so that they could familiarize themselves with her abilities. Once during her childhood, Sun Joong talked to Sunny about her powers and asked her why she used them.

“Why do you use those powers, dear? What are they for?” Sunny, who had selective mutism due to beating and scolding by her parents, shrugged her shoulders and refused to look her mother in the eyes.

“I have to.” she spoke softly, barely opening . “I need to.” Her mother looked at her puzzled. She knew something was wrong with her child and this needed even further guidance.

“Well you have to stop using them around here when you’re angry! You can’t go around wrecking our house! Control your temper if you can, Sunny.” Sun Joong stood up and gave her daughter an angry glare. “Because if you cause trouble one more time, I’m gonna have to shut you up in the storage room, do you understand?” Sunny’s angry eyes tamed down as she looked down to the floor. Sunny was very much afraid of her parents and the slightest fracture of their rules scared Sunny to death. Her parents were very brutal in terms of physical and verbal abuse. They had left the powerful and evilly dangerous Sunny emotionally paralyzed.

But what exactly went on behind closed doors?

Many years back, Sun Joong and Ban Gi discovered Sunny’s ability to cause destruction and pain when angry. Once when they grounded her, they saw her breaking plates and trashing the walls with just her eyes and her fingers and they knew right then and there that the child had some sort of inborn power. Not knowing what to do and in total denial of this fact, Ban Gi resorted to beating his duaghter up whenever she used her powers. Sun Joong took care of the verbal beatings. There was another time when Sunny was picked on in school by some boys, she lifted them up and hung them by their collars on the blackboard. The teacher was just horrified when she saw this but unlike most kids who’d deny their mischievous acts, Sunny bluntly confessed to the teacher that she was responsible for the boys’ unfortunate and humiliating end. The teacher sent her to the principal’s office and once there, Sunny said that “Father Legion” told her to do so. Angered, terrified, and baffled by her statement, the principal had no choice but to drop the girl from the roll, deeming her too insane and overly scary to continue studying in their strict Christian school. Sunny had then stayed home and learned from her mother and from the books that her other relatives supplied her.

Sunny was just too much of a problem child.

It didn’t take long before the couple started experiencing strange things in the night which, despite have had dealt with it before, still gave them the creeps. When they saw Sunny sitting upright in her bed, eyes bloodshot red and hair looking messier than an old rag, Ban Gi would drag her out of her room and bring her to the basement where they let her sleep on the cold floor.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP AT THIS TIME OF THE NIGHT, HUH?!” Ban Gi said when he bust into his daughter’s room and saw her standing right next to the window, her room a mess. “WHAT DID YOU DO THIS TIME?!?!” Ban Gi yelled. Sunny’s devilish eyes started to turn red not because of sleepiness but because of tears. She was about to cry because of fear.

“I’m sorry, daddy. I’m really sorry. But he told me to do it!!” Sunny pointed down to the ground, further angering her father. Her father knew that it was the Devil she was pertaining to. Not wasting any time to educate his daughter, he took Sunny’s skinny wrist and dragged her from her upright standing position down to the floor. Sunny shrieked and shrieked, waking her mother up. Sun Joong stood up and saw what her husband was doing to Sunny and asked him to stop.

“What are you doing?” she demanded angrily.

“I caught your daughter wrecking her room!” Ban Gi yelled. Sun Joong sharply looked at her daughter who shied away from her mother’s eyes. She walked towards her daughter and slapped her across the face. Sunny yelped and fell harder on the floor.

“Did we not tell you to sleep on time! And to not use your powers?! Sleep in the attic, you demonic brat!” Ban Gi dragged Sunny down the stairs and on the floor to put her in the basement. There was a flight of stairs that led to the very basement and Ban Gi made his daughter go down those stairs in order to get to the bottom of the basement. Once at the bottom, Ban Gi shut the door and locked his precious daughter inside the basement. In there, Sunny started to cry and call out for her parents who refused to answer her. In the basement, Sunny was left alone with her bare feet on the cold floor and alone in the darkness. She walked around the basement, her eyes still wet with tears, streaming down her face. Sunny would love to use her powers on her parents but she loved them too much to do this, so instead, she took it out on the basement.

Sunny looked around her. Pure darkness. The only source of brightness was a small light bulb hanging from the ceiling. Sunny was really upset at this moment and though her fear of her parents was present, she risked it all when anger conquered her. She raised her arm slowly and the light bulb hanging from the ceiling began to swing. Slowly it swung at first but the angrier Sunny got, the faster it swung. Finally, Sunny reached her boiling point and the light bulb flew to the other side of the room, shattering into a million pieces. The fierce young girl looked up at the door to see if her father was about to make his way to the basement. Good for her, he wasn’t coming. He and his wife were fast asleep in their room and the basement was soundproof so not a thing could be heard from outside of the basement. Sunny continued to trash the basement, moving everything with her hands and eyes. She threw boxes, smashed old appliances and broke basically everything that was there. When the basement was trashed enough, Sunny breathed in and out and looked at what she had done. Her humanness came back and realizing all that she had done and the fact that she was going to be in big trouble dawned on her. Sunny fell to her knees and wept and in repentance for what she had done, she used her powers to harm herself. Sunny stared at her arms and legs, piercingly. A crooked line began to appear from Sunny’s forearm, blood oozing out of it. Sunny screamed in pain at the punishment that she was giving herself but continued, thinking that it was for her mother and father.

“It could pass as an accident…” Sunny whispered to herself. “I could tell them that I was looking for something and fell…” She cried herself to sleep and laid down on the cold cement.

The following day, Ban Gi went to the basement to check on his daughter. He got up from bed and took the key from the key hanger, put it in the key hole, turned it and opened the door. He flicked the light on and was greeted by a horrible sight. He found his daughter lying on the cold floor with long and huge scars all over her body. Sunny cried and cried and cried, trying to look as helpless as possible.

“Sunny! Sun kyu! What happened to you?” Ban Gi ran down the stairs and checked on his daughter. He cradled her in his arms and checked on her. Sunny cried and cried and her father carried her up the stairs and laid the young girl in her bed. Sometimes, her parents were really caring and at times they were just evil beings. But Sunny was the real evil being, with the curse that was put on her by her mother. Her parents were being very strict about not using her powers and protecting her from the world. All the more when Ban Gi called Sun Joong’s attention with regards to the wounds.

“What happened to you?” asked Sun Joong with concern written all over her body. She checked her daughter who was sobbing crocodile tears.

“Mommy…” young Sunny sobbed. “A man came inside the basement… he passed through the window and hurt me….” Sun Joong knew that her daughter knew better than to lie to her so she immediately believed Sunny. Sunny would never tell a lie to her parents. She wouldn’t dare.

“My poor child!” Sun Joong cried. Sunny couldn’t understand her parents for some reason. They had really severe mood swings. At times they’d be the nicest and most caring people and later on they’d be the most monstrous parents, people you wouldn’t want to cross paths with. Sunny hated to admit it to herself, but she was the same way. Sunny’s powers made her that way. Violent and nice. All in one body.

Out of overprotectiveness, Sunny’s parents instructed her not to leave the house. Because of that incident, they guarded her with all their being and preached to her about the wrongs of the world. Her mother told her about boys and warned her not to get close to any, except for her father and close relatives. All day Sunny would listen to her mother preach the Bible and condemn harlots, alcohol, and all things worldly. Sun Joong also taught her daughter to wear skirts that flow way past the knees and long-sleeved blouses. Should the temperature rise, she told her daughter that she should wear short sleeved blouses with a shawl on. The incident that Sunny lied about was made such a big deal by her parents that they began to restrict her, all the more when she was growing to be a young lady.

“Mom, can I go outside?” Sunny asked one day. Her mother looked at her sharply and grunted. She put the dish down and looked at her daughter sternly, placing her hands on her hips, indicating that she was angry. Sunny gulped in some air and backed away, her back hitting the counter top.

“What did I tell you? What?!” Sun Joong asked angrily. Sunny started to feel fear and when she felt fear, her power would start increasing. Sunny tried to control this as she didn’t want her mother to get even angrier after she had warned her not to use her powers.

“N-no going outside…” Sunny whispered.

“What?” asked Sun Joong.

“No going outside?” Sunny repeated.

“It seems as though you are unsure?” Sun Joong reached for the iron rod that was just beside the lazy chair. The rod was black, long and looked diabolical. The kind that would scar your if it hits it. Sunny knew better than to stay and watch, she had to run for her life! She went around and went upstairs to her room, crying. Her powers were becoming stronger and stronger and she was trying her hardest to control the power from coming out. Sunny rushed to her room and locked herself. In there, she unleashed her power and took it out on herself, hurting herself even more. Sun Joong sensed that her daughter was using her powers in her room again and ran upstairs. Sunny heard her mother’s angry, stomping footsteps and hid underneath the bed. The young lady controlled her breathing by covering and keeping her eyes peeled. Her small frame did wonders for her as she was able to conceal herself without having to worry about her legs sticking out. She curled up into a small ball, her right arm around her knees and her left hand over . She was close to holding her breath.

“I KNOW YOU’RE IN YOUR ROOM, YOU LITTLE BRAT!” Sun Joong yelled. Sunny heard it from inside her room and as her mother neared the door of her room, she held her breath. Sun Joong burst into the room with the iron rod, ready to beat her daughter up again. Sunny closed her eyes and prayed for some kind of miracle but to no use. Sunny felt a cold hand on her ankle, that cold hand dragged her from underneath the bed.

“AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!” Sunny shrieked. All the more did she raise her voice when she saw her mother holding the iron rod. The moments that followed were just sad and brutal as Sunny couldn’t see past the iron rod working its power on her small body. All the young girl could do was cry.

“DIDN’T I TELL YOU THAT WHEN I ASK YOU SOMETHING YOU SHOULD REPLY?! DIDN’T I!?!” Sun Joong continued to beat at Sunny. The slightest infraction of their rules resulted to abusive episodes as this.

Then, the unwanted and unexpected (well, sorta) came.

With the sadness, resentment, and fear building up and being unable to control her emotions at the moment, Sunny’s brows furrowed and a wave of electric energy came blasting from her hands to her mother, throwing Sun Joong and the iron rod to the wall. Sun Joong shrieked and as her daughter stood up with bloodshot eyes. Sunny made all the objects move with just her eyes, starting with the picture frames. She looked at them one by one, making them fall and break on the floor. Sun Joong’s anger came and using her authority as a mother, she got up and bellowed at her daughter.

“WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT USING YOUR POWERS?!” Sun Joong grabbed the rod once more but Sunny used her eyes to make it levitate and threw it far away from her mother’s reach. Sun Joong had no choice but to use her own hands. Fighting her daughter’s power, the angry mother grabbed her daughter’s hand and all her powers came crashing down. She yanked her daughter down on the floor and beat her up. She grabbed her daughter’s wrist, dragged her down the stairs and brought her to the basement.

“Mom! Stop! I’m sorry!!” Sunny begged. Sun Joong sustained a few bruises, brought about by the shattering of the frames. Ignoring her daughter’s pleas, she threw her down the flight of stairs in the basement and when she heard Sunny land hard on her back, she locked the door and let her daughter stay in there til the morning.
