Sungjong
Lost and Found/고독It was a regular Sunday afternoon. The sun was shining and the sky was a cloudless blue. Children were frantically racing around the playground, trampling each other, and fighting for their turn on the equipment. Eight year old Sungjong was playing with his school friend Myungsoo, also known as L since his English nickname was "Liam", whilst his younger five year old stepsister Sunhee was playing on the slide, with his stepmother watching whilst watching his baby stepbrother Jeongmin, lying in the pram.
After a game of tag, Sungjong and L went onto the swings and began to swing for a while, trying to find out who could swing the highest.
The afternoon flew by, until Sungjong's ears caught a familiar sound.
"Kim Sungjong!"
His stepmother was calling him.
"Kim Sungjong!" the voice called again.
Sungjong was originally born as Lee Sungjong, but was adopted by a family with the surname Kim at four years old, hence having changed his family name.
Sungjong stopped on the swings momentarily, whilst L stopped and listened.
"Sungjong," said L, "I think you should go now."
But Sungjong did not answer. He just continued to sit frozen on the swings.
The stepmother trying not to lose her patience with the boy immediately went over to him.
"Sungjong-ah, did you hear what I just said? I said it's time to go home. Come on."
She tried to pull Sungjong off the swings, but Sungjong did not budge.
"Sungjong, what's the matter? It's time to get off."
Sungjong only grapsed the chains with a more tight grip and scowled.
"Sungjong, why aren't you listening to me? I said it's time to get off!"
Sungjong continued to stare at the lady with a cold expression on his face.
Finally she could not take it anymore and shouted as she pulled him off the swings roughly, making the baby cry.
"Now look what you made me do!" she scolded whilst poking Sungjong in the forehead, "You worthless little brat!"
Sungjong glared up at her, giving a look of hatred whilst L was staring in shock, whilst the four immediately headed for the car and made their way home.
