I sighed as I sipped my herbal tea that was slightly cold because of the weather. The February weather isn’t exactly what you call friendly.
“I wonder how Kris is doing with the new campers,” I mumbled thoughtfully to myself, staring at the calm waters that presented itself to me. It was blue green, just like Suho’s eyes.
I sighed and took another sip.
My feet dug in more in the sand, feeling the rocky yet soft sentiment on my sole. The wind whipped my hair back as I was grateful for it. Saved by the pain of washing my hands before touching my hair.
I watched as the other campers hauled the canoe on the lake, pushing each other and hopping in. I smiled softly as I remembered my first time riding on a canoe here in Camp Olympus. It wasn’t scary getting on the canoe, because I was distracted by the marvelous view Camp Olympus had.
Just in the middle of the woods is a campsite that is on full swing. Monster Class is compulsory, and if you don’t show up, they’ll test you on the monster you missed out on studying about. Capture the Flag and War Games isn’t till after dinner. The forest is packed with monsters, so you’d be mad going in there without any weapons.
The camp is protected by an invisible shield, so monsters can’t just stroll in to by one of Camp Olympus’ burgers.
“Worried again or planning my death?” A too familiar voice interrupted my train of thoughts. I grinned and closed my eyes briefly, knowing who it was immediately.
“I wouldn’t be Bang Jiae if I wasn’t strategizing what way is the best for you to die, Barbie,” I responded in a superior tone as a figure sat beside me by the sand. He had brown swept to one side hair, large doe-like eyes and a baby face. He sat cross-legged as he stared at the campers on the canoe with a smirk on his face. He had pretty facial features, and he’s pretty feminine. No wonder he was sought out by a lot of females.
One word: gross.
He had a well built body, but not the muscular that you would spot right away. I often about his lean figure without any muscles, and that gets him insecure.
“Really assuring, braniac. Anyways, I’m here to report that Chen almost stole everyone’s wallet because he was upset.” My head snapped towards him in alarm.
“What?! I thought he was guarding the new campers!”
”And I don’t know what ran through that brain of yours, but remember that Kris hates associating himself with kids? So Chen told him that there was a newly opened store that sold alpacas-”
“Wh-“
“Don’t ask why. So, Kris walks in the store and it was filled with the new campers who had a lot of questions for Kris. So as a result, Kris caused a thunderstorm, scaring the campers, and Chen laughing his off. Kris got mad and almost started a fight with Chen,” Luhan continued in a superior tone I used awhile ago. I slammed my palm on my forehead, totally forgetting about that.
“But don’t worry, I already sent Xiumin to take care of the situation. He’s out there playing with the new campers while Kris’ and Chen’s wrists are tied together, you know, to keep him from stealing wallets.” Luhan laughed as I checked my pocket for my wallet, a sound that made you agree to whatever he says.
He knows how to charmspeak, and he had mastered it to he extent just by making sounds, and not actual words, he can persuade anyone. Of course, I also trained myself to resist charmspeak. Years of reading him and being his friend taught me how to detect those kinds of things.
But he didn’t stop trying, that Barbie Doll.
“He left his post? Without telling me?” I growled mostly to myself, already thinking of ways to kill the guy. As the oldest, he was supposed to guard the main entrance and see if any searchers come with demigods in hand, or worse, monsters.
And from what I heard with Luhan, he’s having a dandy time with kids.
Suddenly, I’m on Kris’ and Chen’s side.
“I said chill, Ji, it’s-“
“TAKE THE TEA!”
“Ah! It burns!” I heard Luhan yelp in pain as I shoved the teacup to him. I pinched the bridge of my nose as I power-walked back to camp. The beach, the place I was lounging on awhile ago, was just right outside the borders of the camp. You can canoe there, and also have beach parties.
I whacked a fern out of my way, my anger reaching a boiling point. No one was guarding the entrance, helpless demigods might be there, and Xiumin is playing with kids.
“KIM MINSEOK! YOU’RE SO DEAD ONCE I FIND YOU!” I yelled, my voice echoing. I huffed in anger and continued trudging to the worn path that campers usually take to get to the beach.
“I don’t think spilling tea on your best friend is hardly polite,” Luhan’s voice reached my ears yet again, but I did not stop. Soon, he was walking beside me, already panting.
“I’m going to give him a piece of my mind,” I snarled as I kept my eyes forward.
“And I’m totally rooting for you Ji! Let’s just hear him out before we do anything-“
“BARBIE, DUCK!” I ducked along with Luhan as a large animal sailed over our heads, landing ten feet away from us. I immediately stood up and unsheathed my sword. The sword was three feet long; the hilt was simple black leather. I called it, ‘Lux’. In the corner of my eye, I saw Luhan mumbling curses as he took out his sword.
It was no ordinary sword, for it was the Sword of Peleus, rumored to assure victory to anyone who has battled with the sword as a weapon before.
“Why would it have to be a hellhound? Out of all the monsters in the woods, we get the one that uses the dead as chew toys,” Luhan complained as I tried to block his complaints.
A true child of the goddess of love alright.
Oops, sorry Aphrodite.
The monster growled, baring its large teeth at us. It walked closer as we walked backwards. We circled each other, Luhan still muttering.
“…why can’t it be a large butterfly? Large butterflies are harmful too you know! Or a cute little- TRAINING SESSION NUMBER 6! GO!” And after Luhan announced that, our training kicked in. I scaled the tree as Luhan baited the monster. I grasped tightly on the trunk as I analyzed the situation.
“You look so ugly Hades banished you here!” Luhan taunted as I couldn’t help but admire his courage.
“Luhan! Stop insulting yourself!” I called out, hoping he wouldn’t take his eyes off the confused hellhound.
“You’re not helping, Badass Bang!” Luhan yelled in a pitch Beyonce couldn’t quite reach yet, lunging at the hellhound. He did the obvious thing, and I resisted the urge to slap my palm on my forehead.
He tried to bury his sword in the hellhound’s forehead, but the hellhound jumped away in time. Luhan rolled back up and they circled again.
“Great going, Barbie, no wonder Kris wanted to fry you!” I shouted at him in anger. That hellhound should’ve been sent to Tartarus already.
Luhan apparently took this to heart, because he started fighting like a real warrior. He would block the hellhound’s path, turn around quickly, and cut the hellhound in its weak places, like in its back. I watched in agony as the hellhound’s teeth were just inches from where Luhan’s head was.
“Well don’t just perch there on the tree like a ing bird! Help me!” Luhan yelled in frustration as he slammed his hilt on the hellhound’s head. It wasn’t enough for it to die, but it was enough for it to stumble for a few seconds.
I jumped down from the tree and landed on the hellhound’s back. It immediately went crazy, trying to throw me off.
I sank my sword deep into its back, used his back as a launching pad and soared towards Luhan, both of us toppling down. The monster stood still for a second before it burst out into golden dust. I heard Luhan groan as I used him to help myself up.
I walked over to the pile of dust and picked up my sword. I sheathed it again and turned towards Luhan who had his arms behind his back, using them to let him sit and lean. His sword was already sheathed. One leg was unfolded as the other one was against his chest. He flipped his air and gave me a million drachma grin.
“Am I still pretty?” he asked in a high pitched voice as I laughed, musing on why I was friends with someone like him.
“Yes, you’re still Barbie’s brother. Get up, you think I forgot about killing Xiumin?” I asked him in a disbelieving tone as Luhan shrugged, his eyes sweeping our surroundings.
“Okay, let’s go get your chance at steamed bun lover before anymore friendly dogs attack us, savvy?” Luhan suggested with a little hint of fear in his voice.
“Since when were you into Pirates of the Caribbean?” I jokingly asked as Luhan steered me into the main entrance at camp. We casually walked inside and scanned the area.
“There’s that post abandoning, steamed bun loving counselor you are looking for Jiae!” Luhan pointed at a short figure who was talking animatedly to the kids. I spotted Kris not too far away from him. I cracked my knuckles and stomped over to Xiumin.
He noticed this, and he quickly raised his palms.
“Jiae, I know I abandoned my post, but Kris was practically threatening them! And don’t forget that troublemaking Chen!”
“Am not!”
“Are you serious?”
Kris and Chen replied at the same time, staring dumbfounded at Xiumin. They casted a sideways glance at the kids as if to tell them to keep their mouths shut.
“And I couldn’t resist! One gave me steamed buns! Look- CHA!” Xiumin pushed his palms out to me as a jet of water drenched me from head to toe.
Oh I forgot, that boy always carried a water bottle with him wherever he went.
I spluttered and rubbed my eyes. I glared at Xiumin and I started to growl.
“Believe me hyung, Jiae is ten times worse than the hellhound we fought awhile ago. Good luck! Come on guys, let’s see if I can persuade Chiron to let us use the Pegasus!”
“No complaint there. And Jiae, don’t go easy on him.” Kris removed his bonds as Chen already ran and bolted after Luhan.
I never kept my eyes out of Xiumin as I took out my sword.
Deadly to monsters and to annoying, post abandoning, steamed bun loving human beings.
“I have more water!” Xiumin threatened, his eyes bulging as he started stumbling backward, trying to get away I suppose. I raised my like I was just holding an ordinary frying pan.
“And I have 8 years of experience with this sword! YAH! COME BACK HERE!” I chased Xiumin around the camp, carefully dodging the campers that were in my way.
Mind you, this is normal camp life.
And the fun is just about to begin.
