Preface
A Second Chance
They were creatures of another earth, foul tempered and vicious. Tyrants had descended upon the place soon after its birth, which was followed by the decimation of most of it. They began to scour the rest of the planet for any other signs of life, dominating and oppressing what wasn’t consumed.
Before their coming, the sky was pale yellow, healthy and full of light but was now dirty grey and cloudy. When they came most everything was burned and the smoke rose from the fires and filled the sky, covering the planet and blocking out the light. It also brought a grey, hazy mist that covered the planet under the layer of smoke. Some small rays managed to penetrate the cloud cover but were lost in the Waste, feeding life into a ground that could not nourish it. The Waste was desolate with dry and cracked dirt stretching for miles littered with dead saplings, the memorials of forest, and skeletons as their only companions.
Once covered in forests and with rivers dancing between the groves, the planet had only a few pockets remaining with most of the rivers as dry as the Waste. Trees only existed in the furthest reaches from the Tyrants with smaller bushes covering the surrounds that were once white and vibrant. Now they were faded and blackened and died off as the Waste reached out.
At the centre of the desolation was a castle, a citadel, the fortress of the Tyrants. In great halls they feasted and filled themselves with wine fermented in the carcasses of their own brothers. The roads were black and uneven, the walls of the houses were dirty and grey. Discarded flesh and skeletons lined the streets like guards hailing a procession and the place smelt of death. Snarls and roars echoed throughout the castle, they were cruel even to each other and found a taste for the sadistic.
Occasionally they would leave, dark ships visible against the sky, coming and going as they pleased. They had travelled through the stars, destroying then settling the surface of each planet they met. Mato was the newest recruit and the Tyrants were a force stronger than nature.
